Quarless made marginal fantasy contributions over the first three weeks with 77 receiving yards and a touchdown, but he was shut out in the box score in Week 4. Quarless did play 43 of a possible 52 snaps Sunday, but his goose egg indicates that his fantasy production will remain sporadic.

It's worth nothing that while he wasn't targeted, Rodgers did see more playing time than Quarless early in Thursday's game.

Richard Rodgers, who started each of the four preseason games, remains the favorite to get the starting nod in Week 1. However, while he probably didn't do himself any favors Thursday night, Quarless still figures to have some kind of role in the offense, and could eventually make a push for the starting job. With Brandon Bostick (leg) expected back at some point in the first half of the season, there may eventually be a third competitor for snaps and targets.

While Rodgers is the favorite to start Week 1 in Seattle, this competition won't necessarily end with the beginning of the regular season. Quarless could cut into Rodgers' snaps, or even assume the starting role if the rookie struggles. Also worth mentioning is Brandon Bostick (leg), who is expected to miss at least the first week of the season, but may eventually have a role in the offense.

Additionally, fellow tight end Brandon Bostick was targeted before Quarless' first catch and Quarless also dropped a fourth-and-goal target while being called for offensive pass interference as well. While the Packers' competition remains fluid, it appears the rookie Rodgers could be the front-runner, which Friday's next exhibition outing could add context to.

While it isn't a good sign for Quarless that he was passed over for the third-round rookie, this battle won't be decided in the first week of the preseason. In addition to Rodgers and Quarless, Brandon Bostick is also thought to be in the mix for the No. 1 tight end job.

Quarless is the Packers' most experienced tight end, so it does not come as a big surprise that he heads into the preseason opener as the top tight end on the depth chart. Quarless will still be pushed for playing time over the reminder of the preseason by Brandon Bostick, who is listed as the backup tight end, and rookie Richard Rodgers.

Quarless rested during the offseason program, allowing third-round rookie Richard Rodgers to shine. Now Quarless has a battle on his hands, and he doesn't have the skill set to blow anyone out of the water in a competition. "He's not a good in-line blocker," the personnel man said. "He's better in space. His overall effort can be up and down. I don't think he's the most physically tough guy or the strongest guy at the point of attack." It's a battle to monitor in camp.
