Ridley dominated the first quarter, but Shane Vereen was worked in throughout the game, ultimately finishing with 90 yards on nine carries and 18 yards on three receptions. James Develin and Brandon Bolden also combined for three carries, with only one of those coming in the fourth quarter. Following Ridley's disappearance from the offense in last week's blowout loss, we saw the other side of the coin Sunday night, as he's a good bet to reach 20 carries whenever the Patriots win big. Next week, Ridley draws a road matchup against the tough Buffalo defense.

Ridley had five carries for 28 yards in Monday's 41-14 loss to the Chiefs.

As can be expected whenever the Patriots are forced to play from behind, Ridley was essentially a non-factor in the offense, while Shane Vereeen had eight carries and five receptions. Next week's matchup with the Bengals isn't particularly attractive for either player, as the struggling New England offense will face a Cincinnati defense that was dominant in its last two games.

Ridley, who also caught one pass for seven yards in the game, continued to see the bulk of the Patriots' carries (Shane Vereen had seven) in Week 3, though his 2.8 yards per carry Sunday feel short for his fantasy owners, given that he did not score a TD in the contest.

Meanwhile, fellow RB Shane Vereen carried six times for 40 yards and caught one pass for zero yards in the contest. Moreover, Ridley saw his snaps increase from 22 in Week 1 to 37 on Sunday. While Ridley's weekly usage will largely hinge on the flow of the game, he should continue to see a good chunk of the Patriots' carries in the coming weeks, assuming he holds on to the ball.

Ridley was on the field for 22-of-86 snaps on offense in Sunday's loss to the Dolphins, ESPN.com reports.

Meanwhile, fellow RB Shane Vereen was on the field for 61 snaps, though Ridley still retained a slim edge in carries, by an 8-7 margin. We'll have to see if there is a similar ratio in Week 2's contest against the Vikings, but in any case, it looks Ridley's fantasy upside is going to be impacted by the team's usage of the versatile Vereen.

Meanwhile, fellow RB Shane Vereen carried seven times for 36 yards and a TD and caught five passes for 35 yards. While Ridley's numbers were modest, he did not fumble in the game, which he started. Meanwhile, rookie James White was inactive. While a time-share is in play here, Ridley will continue to possess some fantasy utility in the coming weeks, with added rushing opportunities likely, provided he continues to take good care of the ball.

Despite some speculation that Ridley could be a candidate to be a surprise cut, he was retained by the team and as long as he is able to avoid fumbling issues, he's in line to team up with Vereen (a capable pass-catcher out of the backfield) in the New England offense, with White and returnee Brandon Bolden on hand as reserves. While Vereen remains a viable option in PPR formats, it remains to be seen how many carries the Patriots plan to hand him. In Ridley's case, as long as he is able take adequate care of the football, he remains a candidate for both early-down and goal-line work.

While Ridley's role, and in turn, his fantasy value hinges on his ability to take good care of the football, it looks like he remains in line to team up with Vereen, a capable pass-catcher out of the backfield, in the New England offense, with rookie James White also on hand. Meanwhile, Brandon Bolden, Jonas Gray and Roy Finch are all candidates to secure the team's No. 4 role.

In the Patriots' roster projection posted Monday by ESPN's Mike Reiss, Ridley is listed as a possible odd man out.

The report is admittedly speculative in nature and such an outcome would be very surprising, but Ridley's low snap count (11) in Friday's third preseason game caught Reiss' eye. Meanwhile, Ben Volin of the Boston Globe predicts that Ridley will stick, which seems a much more likely scenario, with the running back's past fumbling issues presumably the reason that at this stage there would be any question surrounding his potential role with the Patriots this coming season.

Shane Vereen got the start and dominated the first-half workload as the Patriots went with a fairly pass-heavy approach. Ridley and James White were both worked in with the first-team offense, but White had just two touches while the starters were still in the game. Though Ridley remains the favorite to handle the goal-line work and lead the team in carries, he's once again a risky proposition. Shane Vereen could easily end up playing more snaps, and White looms as a threat to further eat into Ridley's touches. On the flip side, Ridley should see quite a bit of work when the Patriots are nursing a lead or near the goal line, and both of those things figure to happen quite often.

Ridley, James White and Shane Vereen all saw work with the first-team offense, and while White didn't do much with his carries, Ridley did himself no favors by putting the ball on the ground. Ridley may have been been down, and the Patriots recovered, but the play was his last of the game. While it may be the case that he was already about to be taken out, Ridley is giving his fantasy owners cause for concern. His fumbles were an issue last season, when he was benched for an entire game in Week 13, and then used as part of a three-headed backfield down the stretch. Ridley still has plenty of upside, but Friday's game only reinforced that he's a high-risk, high-reward pick.

Ridley carried twice for two yards in Thursday's preseason opener against Washington.

Ridley drew the start Thursday, and while there's not much to be gleaned from his two carries in the game, the Boston Herald suggests that Ridley maintains a hold on the Patriots' starting rushing job for now, with Shane Vereen and James White also both candidates to see their share of touches in the team's offense.

Nine fumbles over the last two seasons have earned Ridley several extended stays in Bill Belichick's doghouse, but necessity should dictate Ridley gets at least one more shot. The departure of LaGarrette Blount has left the Patriots' "big back" cupboard bare and left Ridley as clearly the most talented option to fill the role. He is a prime bounce-back candidate.

ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss still sees upside in Stevan Ridley.

Reiss concedes that Ridley has been an "error repeater," referring to his nine fumbles across the last two seasons (including playoffs). But with LeGarrette Blount gone, Brandon Bolden a replacement-level talent and James White in his rookie year, the Patriots almost have to give Ridley a significant role. He's an ideal inside-running complement to passing back Shane Vereen. Ridley projects as an ADP steal as long as he can hold on to the football.

Stevan Ridley was held to 17 yards on five carries as the Patriots fell to the Broncos in the AFC Championship game.

The Patriots' offense went nowhere on their first two drives. They inserted Ridley on the third and finally generated some ball movement, though primarily via the pass. LeGarrette Blount remained the lead back and Shane Vereen was utilized the most, especially after New England fell behind 10-0 in the second quarter. Ridley is under contract cheaply through 2014 and he turns 25 later this month. Ball-security woes have been a major drain on his fantasy stock, but we expect Ridley to get another shot at 2014 bellcow duties. LeGarrette Blount is a free agent.

Stevan Ridley rushed 14 times for 52 yards and two touchdowns in New England's Divisional Round win over the Colts.

Ridley again came off the bench behind LeGarrette Blount, but was an important part of the Patriots' power attack, earning yards in the same tough-minded fashion as Blount. Ridley used excellent second efforts to find pay dirt on both of his scores. He'll be in for another 12-15 touch day in next Sunday's AFC Championship Game.

He wasn't targeted in the passing game. Ridley once again came off the bench behind LeGarrette Blount, but the Patriots rotated their "big backs" thereafter. Blount finished with 12 touches to Ridley's eight. The closest Ridley got the ball to the end zone was the Dolphins' 15-yard line. Although he's peeked his head out, Ridley is still very much in the doghouse, and should remain in a rotation for Week 16. He can't be trusted in fantasy championships against the Ravens.
