The game situation allowed Helu to pile up some receptions, but his role is the same as ever. He's the top back for passing downs, but will otherwise just spell Alfred Morris when the Redskins' bell cow needs a breather.

Helu will serve as the Redskins' top backup and primary third-down back, the Washington Post reports.
It's the same role Helu held for all of last season, when he recorded 31 receptions for 251 yards, along with 62 carries for 274 yards and four touchdowns. While not all that exciting as a runner, Helu is one Alfred Morris injury away from what would possibly be a role as a three-down lead back. The Redskins kept undrafted rookie Silas Redd as their third and final running back.

Helu gained 14 yards on five carries and 23 yards on two receptions in Thursday's preseason opener against the Patriots.
Helu spelled Alfred Morris with the first team, worked as the primary third-down back, and then got a bit of playing time with the second unit. With the competition behind Morris not looking particularly stiff, Helu is likely to reprise his role from last season.
Mon Jul 21 201414:33PFF gives Helu outstanding pass-pro marks
Pro Football Focus has rated Roy Helu as a top-five running back in pass protection in two of his first three NFL seasons.
Helu missed most of 2012. He was PFF's No. 5 pass-protecting back as a 2011 rookie, and No. 3 overall last year behind Frank Gore and Maurice Jones-Drew. The Washington media has suggested Helu could lose the job to Chris Thompson or rookie Lache Seastrunk. We see either scenario as highly unlikely. With a 4.26 YPC career average, Helu is as trusty as No. 2 NFL backs come.

Thu Jul 3 201418:56Roy Helu fighting to hang onto his job?
Washington Post's Mike Jones believes the Redskins' third-down back position is "unsettled."
Roy Helu Jr. is the clear favorite for the job, but Jones' tone suggests the is a real possibility second-year RB Chris Thompson beats him out in camp. Thompson is more dynamic than Helu, but he has not stayed healthy since his sophomore season in college and has yet to prove his has the pass protection skills to survive as a third-down back in the NFL. Rookie Lache Seastrunk is also in the mix, but he would have to show vast improvement both as a blocker and receiver to get a shot. The odds are still squarely in Helu's favor, and he is worth a late-round flier as the passing-down back in a Jay Gruden offense.

Wed Feb 12 201412:30Roy Helu's base salary increases for 2014
Roy Helu activated an escalator in his contract that bumps his base salary from $645,000 to $1.389 million in 2014.
He hit the escalator by playing more than 35 percent of Washington's offensive snaps in two of his first three seasons. Multiple reports out of D.C. insist Helu's 2014 offensive role will not change, staying relegated to third-down back duties behind Alfred Morris. Through three NFL seasons, 25-year-old Helu is averaging 4.26 yards per carry with seven touchdowns across 34 games.

Fri Feb 7 201419:47Roy Helu unlikely to see increase in carries
CSN Washington doesn't expect Roy Helu to cut into Alfred Morris' workload in 2014.
Helu had only 62 carries as the Redskins' third-down back this past season. He doesn't project for a major role in the running game behind Morris, though new coach Jay Gruden should get him more involved after running a two-back system with the Bengals last year. Washington is expected to be more of a pass-balanced offense under Gruden, which should increase Helu's snaps. Helu is set to make just $645,000 in the final year of his contract and will return as the clear-cut No. 2 back.
