Both Fleener and Dwayne Allen (four receptions for 43 yards and a touchdown) had productive games as neither appears to have pulled ahead in the competition for targets at tight end. The Indy passing game has a plethora of options - nine players caught passes Sunday - so Fleener's production is going to vary significantly week to week.

Fleener caught his only target for 13 yards in Monday's 30-27 loss to the Eagles.

Fleener is off to a slow start, as there's ample competition for Andrew Luck's attention in an offense that also wants to establish the ground game. Fellow tight end Dwayne Allen didn't fare any better Monday, with no catches on one target.

Fleener had the third most targets on the team and was targeted once in the red zone on a fade route, so there's evidence he won't be minimized in the offense despite the return of tight end Dwayne Allen from last year's season-ending hip injury.

It was encouraging to see Fleener involved in a big play as his speed and ability to stretch the field can be a weapon for the Colts. Fleener was one of three starters to stay in with the second-team offense during Thursday's preseason opener against the Jets, the Kevin Bowen of Colts.com reports.

Fleener figures to have a role in the offense, but to what extent remains unclear. Fellow tight end Dwayne Allen, who shined as a rookie in 2012, returned from a major hip injury to play in Thursday's game. The Colts also have an impressive wideout trio in Reggie Wayne (knee), T.Y. Hilton and Hakeem Nicks. Fleener has the physical tools to be a major receiving threat, but he looked a bit skittish going over the middle in his first two seasons, and never really took advantage of an excellent opportunity last year, when both Wayne and Allen suffered season-ending injuries.

The Colts are expected to dramatically increase their usage of two-tight end sets this season.

Chuck Pagano and Pep Hamilton are showing no signs that they want to spread out the offense and saddle up Andrew Luck. Instead, they're going to get both Dwayne Allen and Coby Fleener on the field in "12" looks and stubbornly stick with a ball-control philosophy. We'd rather take a shot on Allen than Fleener as he's far more talented and is set to play the Rob Gronkowski role.

Coby Fleener caught six passes for 74 yards in Indianapolis' Divisional Round loss to the Patriots.

The inefficient second-year pro hauled in 6-of-11 targets. On the surface, Fleener's 52/608/4 sophomore line appears to be a step in the right direction. Dig deeper, however, and you find a player who still does almost none of the little things right. A soft blocker, Fleener has been prone to drops. He has a remarkable knack for not knowing the chains are. His numbers were greatly inflated by the absence of Dwayne Allen (hip). With Allen certain to return atop the depth chart next season, Fleener can't be considered more than a TE2.

Fleener also committed his usual drop, and failed to get beyond the sticks on a crucial second-quarter fourth down. Fleener is physically gifted, but remains a work-in-progress at the finer points of football. He's going to open 2014 behind Dwayne Allen on the depth chart.

Fleener was targeted three times. The other pass hit him in the hands. Fleener also fumbled one of his catches, but it went out of bounds. He's simply not a playmaker and is just a TE2. Fleener gets Jacksonville next week.

Fleener was a blocker as the Colts went run heavy to protect an early lead and drain the clock against an inept Texans team. The zero-catch afternoon was Fleener's first of the season, and comes after he averaged 8.4 targets over his past five games. The stinging doughnut comes one week ahead of a matchup with the Chiefs, who have erased enemy tight ends all season. Fleener can't be trusted for Week 16.

Coby Fleener caught five passes for 31 yards in Week 14 against the Bengals.

Fleener tied Da'Rick Rogers for the team lead with nine targets. Fleener has failed to top 55 yards receiving in any of the past three games but will continue to be a low-end TE1 next week against the Texans. He caught three passes for 64 yards in Week 9 versus Houston. The Texans are going through the motions on defense.

Coby Fleener was held to three catches for 50 yards in the Colts' Week 13 win over the Titans.

It was a slow day for the entire Indy passing attack, which didn't have a single pass catcher exceed Fleener's 50 yards. T.Y. Hilton led the team with five catches, managing 46 yards. Fleener will continue to be a low-end TE1 option when the Colts take on Cincinnati's defense in Week 14.

Fleener got the majority of his yardage on a 44-yard catch in the first quarter and was a non-factor in the second half. With Reggie Wayne out for the season, he should continue to be more involved in the passing game. Fleener will be just a TE2 in Week 9 against the Rams.
