Smith missed a team meeting Saturday, one day before the Jets were routed in San Diego, the New York Daily News reports.

Smith seems to be getting a hall pass for the mistake - it's being spun as a misunderstand with the time, and it's the first time he's made this mistake. Nonetheless, Smith needs to come through with a strong effort soon if he's going to keep his job. Good luck with the Broncos in Week 6.

Rex Ryan said after Sunday's loss to the Chargers that Smith, who was benched for the second half, will start against the Broncos next week, Seth Walder of The NY Daily News reports.

While it increasingly seems that Smith won't be his franchise's long-term solution at quarterback, he'll apparently get at least one more start. With the Jets trailing 21-0 at halftime of Sunday's game, Smith was replaced in favor of Mike Vick, who didn't play any better. Both quarterbacks clearly both struggled, but they also didn't have much help, as the Jets were completely lacking in receiving weapons with Eric Decker (hamstring) sidelined. Even if Decker returns to face his former team, Smith and his supporting cast will be at a major talent disadvantage against the Denver defense.

Smith was lifted from Sunday's game against the Chargers in favor of Michael Vick to start the second half of the contest, ESPN.com reports.

With the Jets down 21-0 and Smith having completed 4-of-12 passes for 27 yards and an interception, the team turned to Vick, hoping for a second-half spark. It remains to be seen if the switch will stick beyond Sunday's game, though if Vick plays well, we'll presumably have a full-blown QB controversy on our hands.

Smith is keeping his starting job for now despite a mediocre performance in Sunday's loss to the Lions, ESPN New York reports. Smith completed 17-of-33 passes for 209 yards, with one touchdown and one pick.

Smith also lost a fumble and took two sacks, and was not a factor as a runner. The schedule doesn't get any easier, with the Chargers, Broncos and Patriots next up on the schedule.

Smith completed 26-of-43 passes for 316 yards, with a touchdowns and two interceptions in Monday's 27-19 loss to the Bears. He added 20 yards on three carries.

Smith made a few nice plays, but his mistakes largely defined the game, and rightfully so. He misfired on a first-quarter screen pass, allowing the Bears to take an early 7-0 lead on a pick-six. Later on, Smith made a terrible decision to force a throw into the end zone, resulting in an interception by rookie CB Kyle Fuller. Smith avoided what should have been his third pick on the Jets' final drive, when Bears linebacker Jon Bostic somehow dropped a gimme interception. As poorly as he played, Smith also didn't have much help, with Eric Decker (hamstring) missing most of the game. Decker's health will be crucial for Smith's fantasy value, as the Jets were left with Greg Salas and David Nelson to work alongside Jeremy Kerley on Monday. Week 4 brings a home game against the Lions, a team that probably won't allow the Jets to establish their ground game.

Geno Smith had a touchdown run and a touchdown pass in Sunday's loss at Green Bay. He finished 16-of-32 passing for 175 yards, and added 26 yards on the ground. He was sacked once and intercepted once.

Smith looked ready for a big day after directing two first-quarter touchdown drives, but he didn't factor in the scoring after that (not counting one touchdown pass negated by an accidental Jets timeout). He has some sleeper value in Week 3, when the Jets play at Chicago on Monday night.

Smith was efficient in Sunday's win over the Raiders, completing 23-of-28 passes for 221 yards. He had one touchdown and one interception, and 38 rushing yards.

Smith is pushing his way into the starting argument for two-QB leagues. It will be interesting to see how he fares as an underdog, up against Green Bay next week.

Not that anything else was expected, but the Jets made an announcement following Friday's preseason game, during which Smith completed 9-of-14 passes for 137 yards and a touchdown. Both Smith and Mike Vick have played reasonably well this preseason, a scenario that always figured to end with the youngster starting. Smith may have a hard time carrying his success into the games that count, but his early-season schedule looks favorable from a fantasy perspective, and his supporting cast has been upgraded from last year.

The report suggests that Smith is expected to work for two-plus quarters with the Jets' starters on Friday, and while coach Rex Ryan hasn't confirmed the second-year signal-caller as the team's Week 1 starter, it's an assignment that Smith is expected to draw, barring an injury. As far as when there might be an official announcement to that effect, Ryan noted, "when we think it's the right time, we'll tell you."

Smith completed 10-of-13 passes for 98 yards, with no touchdowns and one interception in Saturday's preseason game against the Bengals. He added four carries for 20 yards and a score.

Though his passing numbers were unimpressive, Smith led the first-team offense to two touchdowns and a field goal, with the Jets' running game also playing a huge role. A good portion of the production came against Cincinnati's backups, as the Jets continue to build Smith's confidence by leaving him in games against second-stringers. With all signs indicating that the Jets want Smith to start, the second-year pro has done enough to keep his job.

Smith completed 4-of-6 passes for 33 yards in Thursday's preseason opener against the Colts, adding one carry for 10 yards.

Smith got the start and played two drives, leading the Jets to three points on a 51-yard field goal. Michael Vick led Gang Green to a touchdown on his only drive with the first-team offense, but the drive was largely fueled by penalties, and the Colts were playing backups on defense at that point. The Jets clearly want things to work out with Smith, so it would probably take a drastic performance -- on either his part or Vick's -- for the second-year pro to lose his starting gig. While Smith is clearly capable of turning in an awful game, neither quarterback did anything that would make a significant difference Thursday night.

Smith being dubbed as New York's starting signal caller comes as no surprise, as he's been working with the Jets' first-team for the majority of training camp thus far. Although Michael Vick was brought in this offseason to bolster the Jets' options at quarterback, Smith remains the team's starter despite a turbulent rookie campaign that saw him commit a league-leading 25 turnovers. That being said, Smith should enjoy being surrounded by a more talented supporting casts that includes wide receiver Eric Decker, running back Chris Johnson, and rookie tight end Jace Amaro this season. Thursday will represent the first opportunity for Smith to cement his starting position in game action leading up to the regular season.

Ignore any talk of a quarterback competition with the Jets - unless Smith is absolutely horrible this summer, it's his gig.

The Jets are calling it a competition between Smith and Michael Vick, but that's really a case of semantics. The Daily News says the battle is really between "Good Geno and Bad Geno," with Vick an "innocent bystander." Smith is expected to get roughly 75 percent of the first-team reps as camp opens. "If he doesn't screw up in July and August, the job will belong to him," writes beat man Manish Mehta.

Jets OC Marty Mornhinweg said Geno Smith will get 70-75 percent of the first-team quarterback reps when training camp opens next month.

Michael Vick has reportedly looked awful the past couple days at minicamp, and some question whether his heart is even in it. Smith, on the other hand, has been getting the bulk of the first-string snaps for much of the offseason. That's not going to change anytime soon. The Jets clearly want him to start Week 1.

Geno Smith said he has turned his focus from learning the playbook to "perfecting" it.

Geno would do well to tackle competence before he sets his sights on perfection, but the sentiment of his comments have merit. Smith was woefully inconsistent last season, but he showed flashes of very good play, especially in New York's wins over Atlanta, Oakland, and Cleveland. It is not inconceivable that with another year in the system and better weapons around him Smith could put together a solid 2014 campaign.

Smith is also taking the first-team reps in "critical moments," if that's actually a real thing during these non-contact practices. Regardless, it's further confirmation that the second-year man will head into camp with his nose in front of Michael Vick. If the battle at training camp is close at all, we'll likely see Smith under center when the Jets host the Raiders on Sept. 7.

Jets OC Marty Mornhinweg admits the team's quarterback competition between Geno Smith and Michael Vick isn't a true 50-50.

"We're trying to continue the progression with Geno, and then have Mike ready to go," Mornhinweg said. "It's just that simple, and Mike knows the exact expectations and roles that he has, and Geno knows the exact expectations." It's been obvious all along that Smith has a leg up, but the coaching staff admitting so is probably designed to provide a confidence boost. The job is not being gift wrapped. Smith has to earn it in the camp and preseason.

Michael Vick mixed in with the starters behind Smith as the two shared the first-team reps. It's exactly what was expected. The Jets are portraying this battle as Geno's job to lose, and it will stay that way through preseason games. Ultimately, both guys are good bets to make starts this season.

Speaking in a Thursday radio interview, coach Rex Ryan said Geno Smith is "going to be hard to beat out" for the Jets' quarterback job.

"He knows the offense forward and backwards," Ryan said. The Jets are working hard to rebuild Smith's confidence after signing Michael Vick. Speaking late last month, OC Marty Mornhinweg said Smith would begin the offseason atop the depth chart. Smith is indeed the favorite to start Week 1, but has little room for error as he attempts to hold off Vick.
