Taliaferro is dealing with an MCL injury that will sideline him for a few weeks.

Taliaferro's Week 1 status is thus up in the air, which could tax the Ravens' RB depth early on this season. If Taliaferro is forced to miss any regular season action, Javorius Allen would presumably be in line to see added opportunities behind starter Justin Forsett.

Taliaferro was removed from Saturday's preseason contest at Philadelphia in order to have his knee examined.

During exhibition season, injuries are treated with all manner of precaution, and Taliaferro will likely be afforded similar treatment. Expect a diagnosis to emerge in the near future, but Javorius Allen would experience a bump in value if Taliaferro's ailment proves to be serious.

Taliaferro had 12 carries for 36 yards and a touchdown, adding two receptions for 18 yards, in Thursday's preseason opener against the Saints.

After Justin Forsett played the first few snaps, Taliaferro and fourth-round rookie Javorius Allen split work with the first and second-team offenses. Taliaferro didn't make any flashy plays, but he picked up some tough extra yardage on a bunch of his carries and looked comfortable as a receiver out of the backfield. Although he could see some goal-line and short-yardage work, Taliaferro is mostly just competing with Allen for the backup role behind Forsett.

The Ravens selected Javorius Allen in the fourth round of the 2015 NFL Draft to compete with Taliaferro (foot) for a backup role behind Justin Forsett, the Ravens' official website reports.

Taliaferro and Allen are similar in terms of height and weight, but the latter offers superior agility and pass-catching skills, while the former is more of a traditional bruiser. There may be room for both to make a contribution in 2015, but NFL teams increasingly seem to prefer versatile running backs in Allen's mold, as opposed to power runners such as Taliaferro. The Ravens are no exception, as evidenced by the team's reliance on Justin Forsett in 2014. Short of a serious injury to Forsett, Taliaferro's best shot to make a fantasy impact in 2015 is probably as a goal-line and short-yardage specialist. The foot injury that landed Taliaferro on injured reserve as a rookie shouldn't be an issue for 2015.

The Ravens simply couldn't afford to let Taliaferro hang around on the active roster any longer, with the running back making marginal progress in his recovery from a foot sprain over the past week. Defensive lineman Casey Walker was signed to take Taliaferro's place on the active roster, while Bernard Pierce and Fitzgerald Toussaint will be left to backup Justin Forsett.

Taliaferro recorded a touch for the first time since Week 10, and he even handled some of the short-yardage and goal-line work. Justin Forsett (knee) didn't appear too bothered by his injury, but he shared more of the workload than in recent weeks. Meanwhile, Bernard Pierce was not a factor until late in the fourth quarter, after serving as Forsett's top backup in Weeks 10-13. While it's not entirely clear how the carries will be divided behind Forsett over the final three weeks, Taliaferro is the handcuff with more upside.

Taliaferro did not have any touches or targets in Monday's 34-27 win over the Saints.

Taliaferro could perhaps re-emerge later this season, but for now, he's fallen behind Bernard Pierce as Justin Forsett's top backup.

Taliaferro had three carries for 10 yards in Sunday's 21-7 win over the Titans.

All three of Taliaferro's carries came in the fourth quarter, while Bernard Pierce worked as the top backup to Justin Forsett throughout the rest of the contest. That marked a departure from previous games, as Pierce was inactive in Week 8 and had just one touch in Week 9. Offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak hinted that Taliaferro's Week 9 fumble wouldn't be a factor, but it now seems hard to imagine it wasn't, given that Pierce has repeatedly failed to impress over the last two year. Taliaferro, while rather unpolished, has at least provided the Ravens with some powerful running when called upon. In all likelihood, Pierce and Taliaferro would split the workload in the event of a Forsett injury.

Ravens offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak indicated that Taliaferro's Week 9 fumble against the Steelers shouldn't have much impact on the rookie running back's role, CSN Baltimore reports.

Taliaferro didn't get much work after the fumble, but that was to be expected with the Ravens playing from behind. The rookie and Bernard Pierce have been used as power complements to lead back Justin Forsett, who has handled a good portion of the early-down work, in addition to nearly all of the passing-down snaps. Taliaferro isn't assured of much on a weekly basis, but Sunday's matchup against the Titans is favorable for his role.

Taliaferro had seven carries for 21 yards and three catches for 34 yards in Sunday's 43-23 loss to the Steelers.

All three catches came on the meaningless final drive, while all seven carries came during the first half when the outcome was still undecided. Though Taliaferro did show some power on his carries, his performance was more notable for a sloppy lost fumble that sparked the Steelers. He wasn't benched after the fumble, but with the Ravens playing from behind, Justin Forsett's blocking and receiving skills were needed. Taliaferro saw just one carry after his fumble, then later caught the three short receptions, which the Pittsburgh defense essentially allowed him to get. Forsett is quite clearly the preferred option from Baltimore's backfield, but a Week 10 home matchup against the Titans could shape up nicely for Taliferro to get some goal-line carries and/or clock-killing work.

Taliaferro had seven carries for 27 rushing yards and two touchdowns, as well as two catches on three targets for a team-high 42 receiving yards Sunday against the Bengals.

Justin Forsett led the backfield with 17 carries for 68 yards on a day when Bernard Pierce was a healthy inactive, but it was Taliaferro who scored the touchdowns, rumbling from 10-yards out in the third quarter and eight-yards out in the fourth. The scores were his first since Week 4, and Sunday's game was only the second time all season that he's caught a pass. While Forsett looks likely to get a majority of the carries, Taliaferro can still contribute if he's going to get touches in the red zone.

Taliaferro's teammate, Bernard Pierce, is inactive for Sunday's game against the Bengals.

Though Taliaferro still slots in behind Justin Forsett, ESPN.com's Jamison Hensley suggests that Taliaferro could see some carries close in close with Pierce scratched Sunday, thus making him an option for those scrambling for Week 8 running back help.

Justin Forsett (23 carries) and Bernard Pierce (eight carries) both worked ahead of Taliaferro, who recorded all of his carries in the fourth quarter for a second straight week. The rookie could still eventually move ahead of Pierce, but Forsett has solidified himself as the team's lead back.

Taliaferro gained 29 yards on two carries and 18 yards on two receptions in Sunday's 48-17 win over Tampa Bay.

The receptions came on consecutive plays in the first half to set up a field goal that extended the lead to 38-0, while the carries had to wait until deep into fouth-quarter garbage time. Justin Forsett once again led the Baltimore rushing attack, and it was a bit discouraging for Taliaferro's prospects that Bernard Pierce got 15 carries, not to mention the only goal-line tote. Still, it wouldn't be surprising if Taliaferro were to see more work than Pierce next week, as Pierce has been the least effective of Baltimore's three running backs this season.

Taliaferro had five carries for 18 yards in Sunday's 20-13 loss to the Colts.

Justin Forsett, who started and caught seven passes for 55 yards, had 42 yards and a touchdown on his six carries. Bernard Pierce also chipped in, picking up 30 yards on four carries. Neither Pierce nor Taliaferro was targeted in the passing game, but the rookie did handle what little short-yardage work the Ravens had available. While a split similar to Sunday's is the most likely scenario moving forward, the only thing entirely clear is that Forsett will dominate the passing downs.
