With Reggie Wayne (elbow) declared out for Sunday's game, Moncrief could be in line for more targets against the Steelers.

Moncrief has averaged just 1.6 targets per game this season, but somebody has to absorb the nine targets Wayne was averaging, and Hakeem Nicks and Moncrief seem like the most viable candidates. Moncrief is talented, and being listed as the No. 3 wide receiver on an Andrew Luck-led offense is a great place to be, but you would need to be pretty desperate at wide receiver this week to put a lot of faith in a guy with just nine catches all season.

Moncrief continues to get consistent playing time each week, but he's only getting a few touches per game and likely needs an injury or two ahead of him on the depth chart for viable fantasy value in most formats.

Colts head coach Chuck Pagano says he plans to give Moncrief more playing time. "He's going to continue to get a little bit more action as we move forward," he told the team's official web site.

Pagano may just be giving the rookie praise after a breakoug game last week (4 receptions for 55 yards) rather than actually planning to give him significantly more snaps. If Moncrief gets more playing time, it's not clear which receiver or tight end would get fewer targets given that they're all healthy. Still, it's clear Moncrief's stock is rising and he could quickly find a major role with an injury ahead of him on the depth chart.

Moncrief had four receptions for 55 yards on five targets and had one carry for seven yards in Sunday's win over Jacksonville.

Moncrief got playing time in the second half after T.Y. Hilton left with an ankle injury. Hilton's injury isn't thought to be serious, but Sunday's performance shows Moncrief's role in the offense could grow.

Although he didn't do much in the game, Moncrief still appears ahead of Griff Whalen and Da'Rick Rogers for the fourth receiver role given he got the start and has been said to have had an outstanding training camp so far.

Moncrief is battling for the fourth spot on the depth chart at wide receiver and the 2014 third-round pick may not see much action on offense unless a few wideouts get hurt. However, it looks like he could begin the season as Indy's kick returner.

Moncrief is listed as the Colts' fourth receiver on the team's initial preseason depth chart, ESPN.com reports.

As expected, the top three listed wideouts are T.Y. Hilton, Reggie Wayne and Hakeem Nicks, but it's notable that Moncrief is already (on paper) ahead of the likes of Griff Whalen and Da'Rick Rogers. While his veteran counterparts are healthy, Moncrief is more of a keeper league consideration, but if injuries hit the team's wideout corps (as they did last season), the rookie could factor in sooner than expected.

Holder cautions to "not get carried away" after pad-less practices, but OTA praise is always more positive than negative. A prototypical "X" receiver at 6-foot-2, 221, Moncrief is likely viewed as the heir apparent to short-term stopgap Hakeem Nicks. Reggie Wayne and T.Y. Hilton are Indy's other top wideouts.

Moncrief reportedly had a "spectacular practice." It's an excellent sign that he's showing well early, but we'd expect the athletic freak to perform in non-contact work. He's still going to need some time to learn the NFL game, which he'll get while operating behind Reggie Wayne, Hakeem Nicks and T.Y. Hilton this season. Dynasty owners should note that both Wayne and Nicks are on one-year deals.
