Browns' coach Mike Pettine said Monday that he'll make a decision Wednesday regarding the Browns' starting quarterback in Week 14, leaving Manziel's status uncertain for the time being, Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
Manziel replaced Hoyer in the fourth quarter of Sunday's loss to the Bills, and immediately ignited a previously stagnant offense, scoring on his first drive at the helm. There's no doubting Manziel's athletic ability and big-play potential, but the Browns have gone 7-5 under Hoyer, who still believes that it's his team. Hoyer's recent performance hasn't supported his case, however, as he's thrown five interceptions and zero touchdowns over the past two games combined. Manziel represents the relative unknown with the greater upside, while Hoyer is the more conservative play, but the final decision will ultimately lie in the hands of Pettine and general manager Ray Farmer.

Manziel replaced Brian Hoyer in the fourth quarter of Sunday's loss to the Bills, and finished the contest with 63 yards on 5-of-8 passing. He added 13 yards and a touchdown on two rushing attempts.
Manziel immediately ignited the Browns, leading them to their only touchdown of the game on his very first drive. He wasn't quite as spectacular on his second attempt, nearly losing a costly fumble and eventually turning the ball over on downs. Manziel was called upon on the drive immediately following Hoyer's second interception of the game, so even though the decision was clearly performance related, it's currently unclear if the rookie will be given the starting nod for Week 14's matchup with the Colts. His pure talent alone makes him a strong speculative add heading into the fantasy playoffs, however. Look for confirmation on the quarterback situation from Browns' head coach Mike Pettine later this week.

Manziel entered the game for three snaps at quarterback during Sunday's victory over the Saints and failed to complete a pass on just one attempt.
Manziel took the field on three separate occasions in the third quarter, handing the ball off twice and missing fullback Ray Agnew on a sideline throw. All three of his plays were out of the pistol formation, with Manziel running a read option each time he touched the football. It had been speculated during the offseason that Manziel could potentially take the field for specifically designed formations, and although the rookie did see his first NFL snaps, he did little to make an impact on the offensive front. On the other hand, starter Brian Hoyer didn't put up spectacular fantasy numbers, but was able to lead the Browns to victory in the end. Look for Manziel to continue to see sporadic, situational work in Kyle Shanahan's offense, but he likely won't be threatening Hoyer's job any time soon.

Coach Mike Pettine indicated Friday that it would be a "feel thing" in reference to the use of Manziel in special packages, Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal reports.
Manziel is expected to be used in 2-QB and other special packages by the Browns this year, but when and how that happens remains a mystery. Offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan surely recognizes Manziel's athletic ability, and will look to find creative ways to work him into the offense this season, even though Brian Hoyer has been confirmed as the team's starter moving forward. It's no guarantee Manziel will even be used against the Steelers, however, so it would be wise to avoid him as a fantasy play in Week 1.

Manziel completed 6-of-17 passes for 83 yards and a touchdown, adding four carries for 55 yard with a fumble in Thursday's preseason finale against the Bears.
It was an up-and-down performance for Manziel, who led the Browns to 13 points on five drives, despite losing one of those drives to a Terrance West fumble. Brian Hoyer, meanwhile, completed 6-of-8 passes for 69 yards on his lone drive, leading the Browns to a touchdown. Manziel didn't have a great preseason, but he was decent enough that the Browns will likely turn in his direction if Hoyer struggles for an extended stretch of time.

Manziel completed 10-of-15 passes for 85 yards, adding one carry for a seven-yard touchdown in Saturday's preseason game against the Rams.
Working strictly with the second-team offense, Manziel didn't have much success throwing the ball, though he did scramble for a touchdown on third-and-goal from the seven-yard line after turning a defender around with a pump fake. Brian Hoyer once again struggled with the first-team offense, but head coach Mike Pettine committed to the veteran as his Week 1 starter following the game, NFL.com's Aditi Kinkhabwala reports. It remains to be seen how long Hoyer will keep the job, as he isn't particularly talented, and won't be in a good position to succeed if Josh Gordon is suspended. After mentioning a possible two-QB system earlier this week, Pettine reiterated Saturday that he first wants the team to build continuity with Hoyer. Manziel probably won't take a snap in Week 1.

Coach Mike Pettine indicated Friday morning that it's possible Manziel could be featured in a 2-QB set "down the road," NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports.
Manziel was delegated to backup duties when the Browns officially made the announcement Wednesday morning, but this doesn't mean he won't see meaningful snaps in this role. He'll likely be used mostly in designed run sets, but could occasionally be used to air it out and take the defense by surprise. Until he takes over the starting job, however, this body of work probably won't be enough to warrant much fantasy consideration outside of dynasty formats.

Brian Hoyer has been named the Browns' starting quarterback over Manziel by coach Mike Pettine, ESPN reports.
The team sounds like it will give Hoyer a bit of a leash as Pettine said he doesn't want the veteran constantly looking over his shoulder, but we have to imagine Hoyer - and maybe the Browns as well - have to be mildly successful in order for him to keep the team from firing up the Manziel era. That said, given the rebuilding nature of the team and Manziel's exciting skill set, he has to be one of the better backup fantasy values on the QB board. However, his opening season value just took a hit Wednesday morning.

Manziel completed 7-of-16 passes for 65 yards and one touchdown, adding one rush for negative yards in Monday's preseason game against the Redskins.
This was likely one of Manziel's last chances to deserve he should be the starting quarterback in Cleveland, and he did little to prove that he should be No. 1 on the depth chart. Although he didn't turn the ball over, he was sacked three times, and was unable to work much magic with his legs. The rookie did throw a touchdown to running back Dion Lewis, but it was on a short pass that the back did most of the work on. Manziel also made noise for the wrong reasons, as an obscene gesture towards the Washington bench quickly caught fire on social media, and will surely be a main topic of conversation this week. His main competition -- Brian Hoyer -- completed just 2-of-6 passes for 16 yards, but with neither candidate truly standing out, it now appears that Hoyer will win the job by default. The Cleveland coaching staff is expected to get together at some point Tuesday to officially announce the Week 1 starter, and Manziel's chances currently aren't looking good. There may still be time left in the preseason for a turnaround, but Manziel would have to perform drastically better if he's even going to be considered.

Coach Mike Pettine indicated that he plans to meet with offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, quarterback coach Dowell Loggains and GM Ray Farmer on Tuesday to name the Browns' starter (between Manziel and Brian Hoyer) at QB, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
Assuming the team sticks with that timetable, then the QB duo's efforts in Monday's preseason game against the Redskins figure to a key part of the team's final evaluation on that front. While Hoyer is slated to start Monday night's game, he and Manziel are in line to split time with the Brown's first-team offense during the first half of the contest. When asked if Manziel can still win the job, Pettine noted, "sure he can. He just needs to go out and play. That's the bottom line. They both do." In any case, the report goes on to infer that once a Week 1 starter is declared, it's a decision that won't necessarily be considered a season-long commitment by the team.
Fri Aug 15 201412:37Johnny Manziel: Tardiness for Meeting a Non-Issue
Manziel was late to a team meeting Monday, but the his tardiness was not a factor in coach Mike Pettine's decision to name Brian Hoyer the starter for the team's second preseason game against the Washington Redskins, ESPN.com reports.
Manziel and some fellow rookies apparently misread a schedule that called for a five-minute meeting Monday morning, team sources said. The players were "a couple minutes" late. Pettine handled the matter internally. Any other player and this wouldn't even have been reported. Even though he's not starting next Monday's game, Manziel is expected to get as many first-team reps as Hoyer.
Thu Aug 14 201416:19Johnny Manziel: Will Back Up Brian Hoyer Monday Night
Manziel won't get the starting nod in Monday's preseason game against the Redskins, Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
Manziel is still expected to split first-team reps with Brian Hoyer, but Hoyer will take the field before the rookie Monday night. The news is a bit unexpected, as many anticipated that Manziel would start for the Browns in at least one exhibition contest. Nonetheless, the No. 22 overall pick should see enough time with the starters to get a chance to prove he's still capable of earning the starting gig. Based on this news, however, it still seems as if Hoyer has the edge in the Browns quarterback competition.
Tue Aug 12 201412:24Maziel
Maziel, who practiced with the Browns' starters Tuesday during 11-on-11 sessions, should receive the same amount of reps with Cleveland's first-team as teammate Brian Hoyer does during Monday's preseason game against the Redskins, the Akron Beacon Journal reports.
Manziel continues to split starting quarterback duties in practice with Hoyer as the Browns aim to name a starter before the regular season. Although Manziel was assigned to second-team work during last weekend's preseason opener, it appears the rookie will share an equal amount of reps with Hoyer in Cleveland's first-team setup when Monday's second exhibition outing rolls around. At the moment, it's unclear who will begin the game at quarterback, but coach Mike Pettine reportedly announce that decision on Thursday.

Coach Mike Pettine has refuted a report suggesting that Manziel has moved ahead of Brian Hoyer in the Browns' quarterback competition, according to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
Pettine acknowledges that Manziel has made strides, but he indicated Sunday that talk that the rookie QB has moved ahead of Hoyer is "untrue." At this stage, we'd expect Manziel to start team's next exhibition game, on Aug. 18 against the Redskins, but that has yet to be confirmed. In the meantime, the two quarterbacks are both in line to see work with the team's first-team offense in practice.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer suggests via a report from ESPN's Bob Holtzman that Manziel may have pulled ahead of Brian Hoyer in the team's quarterback competition.
Noting Manziel's promising effort in Saturday night's preseason contest against the Lions, the report hints at a shift in momentum in the competition. Of course, in order for that to remain so, Manziel -- whose talent level makes him the long-term upside play in any case -- will need to look sharp in the team's next exhibition game, on Aug. 18 against the Redskins. It's a contest that Manziel is expected to draw the start in, though that has yet to be confirmed by coach Mike Pettine.

Manziel will get the starting nod for the Browns during their second preseason game against the Redskins on Aug. 18, NFL.com reports.
Teammate Brian Hoyer is still listed as Cleveland's number one quarterback, but Manziel will get a chance to line up with the first team against the Redskins nonetheless. On Saturday, Manziel was put with the second team, so coach Mike Pettine wants the rookie to have an equal opportunity to earn the starting nod come the regular season.

Coach Mike Pettine indicated that Manziel probably won't get any first-team reps in Saturday's preseason opener against the Lions, Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
Pettine suggested Thursday that the team will probably have Brian Hoyer stick with the starters Saturday, with Manziel on track to work with the Browns' second unit. Beyond that, we expect Manziel to see first-team reps in the team's Aug. 18 exhibition game against the Redskins, with the Browns aiming to make a call on a Week 1 starter in advance of the their third preseason tilt.
Wed Aug 6 201412:47Manziel's teammate
Manziel's teammate, Brian Hoyer, will start at quarterback for the Browns in Saturday's preseason opener against the Lions, NFL.com reports.
Coach Mike Pettine noted that it's possible that Manziel could still see some time with the Browns' first team on Saturday, with the report adding that the rookie QB seems likely to start the team's second preseason tilt. Meanwhile, it remains Pettine's plan to name a Week 1 starter by the Browns' third preseason contest.

Manziel is listed as the No. 2 quarterback on the Browns first preseason depth chart, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
Manziel worked with the starters for a bit during Monday's practice, but he has yet to show enough to warrant a No. 1 ranking over the incumbent Brian Hoyer. It's really no surprise that Manziel is considered the backup, as it seems to have been the vibe for the entirety of OTAs and training camp. The two will continue to compete as the preseason rolls along, with both candidates receiving reps with the first-team offense for 11-on-11 drills. Manziel may even get the start for a preseason tilt, but until he demonstrates a mastery of the playbook and shows his explosiveness in game action, consider Hoyer the starter in Cleveland.
Mon Aug 4 201411:49Manziel worked with Browns' starters at practice Monday
Manziel worked with the Browns' starters at practice Monday, the Akron Beacon Journal reports.
Meanwhile, Brian Hoyer was working with the team's second unit and while we won't read too much into Monday's practice slotting, it looks clear that the Browns are giving Manziel an opportunity to compete with Hoyer for the top job. For his part, GM Ray Farmer suggested as the team's preseason slate approaches that the competition will "come down to in-the-game performance."
