Sat May 19 2012 | 18:31 | Kerry Wood officially calls it a career |
Cubs RHP Kerry Wood retired. |
Wood fittingly ended his career by striking out Dayan Viciedo, the lone hitter he faced, in Friday's game against the White Sox. He walked off the mound to a standing ovation and a hug from his son. The oft-injured right-hander made two All-Star games and won the Rookie of the Year award in 1998. Over a 14-year career, he went 86-75 with 63 saves, a 3.67 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 1,582 strikeouts across 1,380 innings. |

It will come sometime during the weekend series at Wrigley Field against the White Sox. Wood, who has posted an 8.64 ERA, 2.28 WHIP and 5/11 K/BB ratio over 8 1/3 innings this season, will get a nice sendoff from the home fans before riding off into the sunset. |

Fri May 18 2012 | 10:01 | Kerry Wood set to announce retirement |
Bruce Levine of ESPN Chicago reports that Kerry Wood will announce his retirement Friday. |
Wood said at the end of last season that he was either going to pitch for the Cubs in 2012 or retire, but this still comes as a surprise. He's been woeful so far this season, posting an 8.64 ERA, 2.28 WHIP and 5/11 K/BB ratio over 8 1/3 innings, but the right-hander will turn just 35 next month. It's not clear if the oft-injured right-hander is dealing with something physically or if he's just decided to call it quite. He'll end his career with an 86-75 record, 63 saves, a 3.67 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 1,581 strikeouts over 1,379 2/3 innings across 14 seasons. |

Thu May 10 2012 | 13:05 | MLB decides not to discipline Kerry Wood |
Major League Baseball has decided not to discipline Kerry Wood for his actions on Tuesday night. |
Wood tossed his glove and hat into the stands after giving up two runs in an inning to the Braves. The 34-year-old right-hander has given up a pair of runs in each of his appearances since returning from the disabled list. It's unfortunate timing for the veteran, as there is a Lake Michigan-sized hole at the back end of Chicago's bullpen. Carlos Marmol is out and Rafael Dolis has the sex appeal of Dr. Phil. Wood doesn't figure to work his way up the hierarchy anytime soon, despite the dearth of talent in front of him -- a 14.54 ERA and as many DL stints and blown saves as converted saves and holds combined will ensure that. |

Fri May 4 2012 | 18:00 | Kerry Wood struggles in return |
Making his first appearance back from the DL, Kerry Wood gave up two runs in the eighth inning Friday against the Dodgers. |
Wood was credited with a hold anyway, but the performance certainly doesn't bode well for his chances of taking over the closer's role anytime soon. He's given up five runs in 3 1/3 innings overall. |

Thu May 3 2012 | 10:03 | Cubs activate Kerry Wood |
Cubs activated RHP Kerry Wood from the 15-day disabled list. |
Wood spent a little over two weeks recovering from right shoulder fatigue and will return to his setup role on Thursday against the Reds. The veteran right-hander is doubtful to hold much fantasy value this year. |

Mon Apr 30 2012 | 19:33 | Kerry Wood could pitch in seventh inning |
Cubs manager Dale Sveum said Kerry Wood (shoulder) could be used in the seventh inning when he returns from the disabled list. |
Rafael Dolis holds a 3.38 ERA and 1.20 WHIP (though he's also walked eight over 13 1/3 innings), and the Cubs will likely keep him in a primary setup role for now and ease Wood back into the role. "Just to take a little stress off the whole situation, when he first comes back, we'll possibly just move him into the seventh inning role and see what happens there," Sveum said. Wood threw 22 pitches in a simulated game on Monday and will be activated on Thursday or Friday. |

"He's making a lot of improvement and says he feels great," said Sveum. Wood was placed on the disabled list Friday with right shoulder fatigue, but threw in the outfield Monday. It's not clear if or when he'll be sent out on a minor league rehab assignment, but he won't be an option to return until the first week of May. |

Fri Apr 20 2012 | 11:15 | Kerry Wood (shoulder) placed on disabled list |
Cubs placed RHP Kerry Wood on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 14, with right shoulder fatigue. |
Wood reported improvement with the shoulder following a cortisone shot on Wednesday, but he either eventually started feeling worse or the Cubs decided not to take any chances. It's not clear at this point how long he might be out, but a longer than minimum stay on the DL would seem to be possible. Scott Maine replaces him in the bullpen. |

Kerry Wood flew back to Chicago on Tuesday to get a cortisone injection in his right shoulder. |

Fri Apr 6 2012 | 05:21 | Wood shows poor control in opener |
Kerry Wood was fairly useless in Thursday's Opening Day match-up, walking three batters -- including one with the bases loaded -- while recording only one out against the Nationals. |
He also had a wild pitch. The only good news is that his ERA remains spotless, as the earned run was charged to starter Ryan Dempster. But Wood gained no ground on closer Carlos Marmol with this forgettable performance. |

Kerry Wood (back) might return to action by Thursday. |
Wood hasn't pitched in a Cactus League game in over a week due to a back strain. He is scheduled to pitch on the side Monday. "We were just easing him back toward the season," Cubs manager Dale Sveum said. "Nothing spectacular form the back is going on. This is backing him off and making him ready for the season. There is just no reason for any extra workload. He was feeling good and everything like that." Wood posted a 3.35 ERA and 57/21 K/BB ratio over 51 innings last season. |

Fri Jan 13 2012 | 21:26 | Cubs ink Kerry Wood to 1-yr deal with option |
Cubs signed RHP Kerry Wood to a one-year, $3 million contract with a $3 club option for 2013. |
Wood signed a team-friendly one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Cubs last offseason, but spoke with multiple teams this winter in hopes of getting a contract at the market-value rate. The Cubs ultimately compromised and awarded him with a nice raise after he posted a 3.35 ERA and 57/21 K/BB ratio over 51 innings last season. He'll function in a set-up role again in 2012. |

Wood, 34, made $1.5 million last season while posting a 3.35 ERA and 57/21 K/BB ratio over 51 innings. |

Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com reports that the Cubs and Kerry Wood have reengaged in talks and are "making progress" toward a one-year deal with an option for 2013. |
A source told CSNChicago.com's David Kaplan on Tuesday morning that Wood was ready to move on because the Cubs wouldn't give him a fair market rate, but Cubs GM Jed Hoyer later said that they have offered him a "substantial raise." Wood, 34, made $1.5 million last season while posting a 3.35 ERA and 57/21 K/BB ratio over 51 innings. The Phillies have also reportedly expressed interest. |

A source told CSNChicago.com's David Kaplan on Tuesday morning that Wood is ready to move on from the Cubs because they aren't offering him a fair market rate. But perhaps things have changed. |
