Wed Sep 1112:25Diamondbacks Hoping Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Will Return Soon
Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (calf), who left the team's game on Sept. 1 with left-calf tightness, has hit off the Trajekt pitching machine and is scheduled to do some running on Thursday. Gurriel was put on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to Sept. 2) after testing showed his calf strain. The good news is that both he and manager Torey Lovullo said the injury isn't serious, and the hope is that Gurriel can return after missing the minimal amount of time on the IL. The 30-year-old is the club's regular left fielder when healthy, so the Snakes will want him back as they make their final push for another postseason appearance in September. The Cuban slugger was a first-time All-Star in 2023 in his first year in the desert and is currently hitting a respectable .274/.316/.428 with 17 homers, 70 RBI and seven stolen bases in his 125 games.

Thu Sep 523:10Diamondbacks Hope Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Can Return Soon
Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (calf) suffered a left-calf strain on Sunday and was placed on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to Sept. 2), but both Gurriel and manager Torey Lovullo said the injury isn't considered serious, and there's hope that he can return after missing minimal time on the injured list. It's good news for a D-backs club that is in prime spot to earn one of the three wild-card spots in the National League as they look to get back to the World Series this fall. The 30-year-old Cuban slugger was a first-time All-Star in 2023 and will return to regular duties in left field in Arizona when he's activated from the IL. So far in 125 games in 2024 with the Snakes, Gurriel has a produced a .274/.316/.428 slash line with 17 homers, 70 RBI and a career-high seven stolen bases. The lefty hitting Pavin Smith is most likely to benefit from extra playing time until Gurriel returns.

Tue Sep 318:34Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Lands On Injured List
Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (calf) has been placed on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday. This news comes after Gurriel injured his calf during Sunday's contest and as a result will miss at least the next 10 days. The D-Backs are calling it a strain, so it's unclear how long Gurriel is actually going to be sidelined. In a corresponding move, first baseman Christian Walker (oblique) has been activated off the injured list and will take over the open roster spot. Jorge Barrosa figures to see increased playing time with Gurriel sidelined. He has collected three hits in his first 12 at-bats with the D-Backs this season. He'll cover center field and bat ninth against left-hander Kyle Harrison on Tuesday.

Mon Sep 216:00Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Not Playing On Monday
Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (calf) is out of the team's starting lineup for the series finale on Monday against the division-rival Los Angeles Dodgers at Chase Field. Pavin Smith will make the start in left field for the Snakes and will hit fifth against Dodgers right-hander Jack Flaherty. Gurriel will take a seat to begin the new week after leaving Sunday's win over the Dodgers early due to a left-calf ailment. Until we know the full extent of his injury, fantasy managers should consider the 30-year-old to be day-to-day. The Cuban right-handed slugger has contributed modest power (17 home runs) and speed (seven steals) for fantasy managers this year while hitting a respectable .274 (133-for-486). Smith will be a DFS sleeper on Monday in the five-hole against a tough right-handed pitcher in Flaherty.

Sun Sep 119:45Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Removed Early On Sunday
Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (calf) was forced to exit early during Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The veteran slugger suffered a left calf injury while attempting to run out a double play in the sixth inning. As a result, Gurriel was removed from the game and is expected to undergo further testing. It wouldn't be shocking to see Gurriel miss a few games because of this injury. Jorge Barrosa took over in left field on Sunday and figures to see more playing time if Gurriel miss time. Barrosa has a limited sample size at the big league level, so he's not an ideal fantasy option right now.

Sun Aug 2511:06Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Out On Sunday
Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. is not in Sunday's lineup as the Diamondbacks look to complete a three-game sweep against the Boston Red Sox on Sunday afternoon. Gurriel has held a strong .361/.442/.500 line in his past ten games but will take a seat for the second time this week. As a result, Pavin Smith will get the starting nod in left field and bat in the five-hole. Smith was recalled from Triple-A Reno earlier this week but has yet to tally a hit since returning to the big leagues. Fantasy managers should expect Gurriel to return to the starting nine as they host the New York Mets on Tuesday evening. Smith should be faded in DFS this afternoon as he will face Boston right-hander Tanner Houck, who has posted a quality start in each of his past three outings.

He then added an RBI single in the ninth for good measure. The 30-year-old Gurriel is currently on a three-game hitting streak and is batting .278 (15-for-54) with a homer, a double, three RBI, seven walks and a stolen base in 15 games so far in the month of August. Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (hamstring) is back in the starting lineup ahead of Tuesday's game against the Colorado Rockies. Gurriel is expected to serve as the designated hitter and bat third versus left-hander Austin Gomber. Gurriel is hitting an outstanding .336 with five home runs and 18 RBI against left-handed pitching this season. Fantasy managers can safely get him back into their lineups on Tuesday.

Mon Aug 1218:40Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Remains Sidelined
Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (hamstring) is out of the starting lineup ahead of Monday's game against the Colorado Rockies. This isn't shocking news considering Gurriel was forced to exit early on Sunday due to a hamstring issue. The D-Backs appear to be taking the cautious approach and giving Gurriel a day off to rest. For now, fantasy managers should consider Gurriel as day-to-day. Jake McCarthy will cover left field and bat fifth versus right-hander Bradley Blalock on Monday.

Fri Jul 1219:40Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Out Again On Friday
Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (undisclosed) will sit out a second straight game due to undisclosed soreness in the series opener on Friday versus the visiting Toronto Blue Jays. Gurriel's soreness doesn't sound like anything serious, so he should be back in Arizona's lineup for the final two games of the first half of the season on Saturday and Sunday. With the 30-year-old out again, veteran Randal Grichuk will start in left field and bat sixth for the Snakes against Blue Jays rookie right-hander Yariel Rodriguez. Gurriel broke a seven-game hitting streak in his last game played on Wednesday, when he went 0-for-4. During his seven-game streak to begin the month of July, he went 9-for-31 (.290) with two homers, two doubles, seven RBI and a stolen base. The Cuban outfielder has been solid for fantasy managers in 2024 with 13 bombs, 55 RBI and 42 runs scored in his 346 at-bats.

Fri Jun 2122:28Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Leaves Early Friday With Elbow Soreness
Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (elbow) exited the game on Friday night against the Philadelphia Phillies with left-elbow soreness. It was a tough night for the D-backs health-wise in the 5-4 road win, as catcher Gabriel Moreno (thumb) also left early. Gurriel did manage to go 2-for-4 with a solo home run, his 10th of the year, in the second inning. The 30-year-old appeared to hurt his elbow during an at-bat in the seventh inning. Without much more information on the severity of his injury, fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day heading into the second game of the series in Philly on Saturday. Veteran Randal Grichuk, who entered the game in right field, would stand to see an increase in playing time if Gurriel's injury is serious enough to land him on the injured list. The Cuban slugger entered Friday's game with a .256 average, nine homers, 43 RBI and 33 runs scored.UPDATE: Gurriel is just dealing with a sore elbow and didn't require an X-ray. Manager Torey Lovullo said he feels good about Gurriel avoiding the injured list, but the team will see how he feels on Saturday.

Sun Jun 213:19Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Returns To Starting Lineup
Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (illness) is starting at left field and will bat third on Sunday. Gurriel was scratched from Saturday's lineup with an illness but is already cleared to return. The 30-year-old has posted a disappointing .236/.276/.366 line with six home runs and three stolen bases across 53 games this season. However, he was riding a four-game hitting streak prior to Saturday and looks as if he is returning to form. Gurriel should remain in your fantasy lineup all season and has a great matchup this afternoon and is worth consideration in DFS as he faces southpaw Jose Quintana who holds a 1-5 record with a 5.06 ERA.

Tue May 2814:41Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Out Of Tuesday’s Lineup
Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. is out of Tuesday's lineup against the hosting Texas Rangers. It's a maintenance day for the 30-year-old veteran, who will be replaced by the speedy Jake McCarthy in left field on Tuesday. Gurriel was a first-time All-Star in 2023 and got off to a hot start in 2024, but he's cooled off considerably over the past month, hitting .168 (17-for-101) with just one home run, five doubles, and seven RBI across his last 26 outings. Look for him to rejoin Arizona's lineup for Wednesday's series finale against the Rangers and left-hander Andrew Heaney. The righty-hitting Gurriel is batting .323 with two homers, five doubles, and 10 RBI in 65 at-bats against left-handed pitching this year.

Thu Apr 1816:06Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Sitting Out Thursday
Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. is not in the team's starting lineup for the start of a series on Thursday against the division-rival San Francisco Giants on the road. The 30-year-old will take a seat for a day of rest, with outfielder Jake McCarthy playing left field and batting ninth and Randal Grichuk in right field and hitting eighth versus Giants right-hander Logan Webb. McCarthy is hitting .375 with an RBI in 16 career at-bats against Webb but will have limited DFS upside in the nine-hole. Meanwhile, Grichuk has one hit in his 10 career at-bats against Webb. Gurriel has five home runs and 20 RBI already this year in 18 games played, but he has just one hit (a homer) in his last 16 at-bats over four games, so he could use a little breather here.

Sun Mar 3109:40Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Homers In Third Straight Game
Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. homered in his third straight game in Saturday's 9-4 loss to the Rockies. He also belted a double, going 2-for-4 with a walk, two RBI, and a run scored in the contest. The 30-year-old is now 6-for-13 (.462) to begin the year, with eight RBI and five runs scored. Last season Gurriel had the lowest batting average of his career (.261), but had the highest Contact% of his career (83.5%) and with a BABIP of .282 (the first time in his career it was below .300) it appears his low BA was a product of bad luck. Nevertheless, he had 24 home runs and 82 RBI last season, both of which appear to be repeatable in 2024, and combine that with a rebound in BA, Gurriel has all of the makings of a value pick primed to outperform their ADP.

Fri Mar 821:00Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Says “He’s Fine” After HBP
Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (hand) says he feels fine after leaving Friday's spring training game versus the Chicago Cubs. He was hit in the hand by a fastball from Cubs pitcher Kyle Hendricks and was removed from the game shortly after. He went 1-for-1 with a double before exiting Friday's contest. Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo described it as a hand contusion and said no X-rays were needed. The 30-year-old is considered day-to-day and could be ready to play as soon as Saturday. He is hitting .389 with a home run and four RBI over seven games this spring. Gurriel is a solid pick at his current NFBC ADP of 224 and will look to build on his 2023 campaign, where he hit 24 homers and logged 82 RBI over 554 at-bats in 2023.
