Shortly after being informed that he would not make the Opening Day roster, Oviedo asked out of minor league deal with Texas, as did Nate Schierholtz earlier in the day. Oviedo signed a minor league deal with the Rangers on Monday that includes an invite to spring training. |
Entering his age-33 season, Oviedo is coming off middling 2014 campaign in which he made 32 appearances out of the Rays' bullpen, posting a 3.69 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP. He may be used at some point this season by the Rangers, but does not profile as a high-leverage arm. |
Sun Aug 3 2014 | 19:53 | Oviedo released by Rays |
Oviedo has been released by the Rays. |
Designated for assignment last week, Oviedo has not been impressive this season. While his 3.69 ERA isn't terrible, it comes with a 7.4 K/9 and 4.6 BB/9. Still, he has plenty of major-league experience as a reliever, and should catch on elsewhere soon enough. |
Sat Jul 26 2014 | 14:53 | Rays designate veteran Oviedo for assignment |
Rays designated RHP Juan Carlos Oviedo for assignment. |
The 32-year-old right-hander posted a 3.69 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 26/16 K/BB ratio over 31 2/3 innings with the Rays. It speaks to the depth that they have in the bullpen that they can release a solid veteran bullpen arm. He shouldn't have difficulty latching on elsewhere. |

Mon Jul 7 2014 | 22:18 | Juan Oviedo gives up four runs in relief |
Juan Oviedo surrendered four runs and seven hits in two innings while finishing out Monday's loss to the Royals. |
Oviedo earned a save for the Rays back on June 16, but he appears to be fourth or fifth in line in the closer mix right now, with Jake McGee, Grant Balfour, Joel Peralta and perhaps Brad Boxberger ahead of him. He's not currently worth owning in mixed leagues. |

Tue Jun 17 2014 | 00:17 | Juan Oviedo notches save for Rays |
Juan Oviedo picked up his first save for the Rays on Monday despite giving up a solo homer to Delmon Young in the ninth. |
We're not sure whether the original plan was for Jake McGee or Oviedo in the ninth, but McGee was needed in a 3-2 game after Grant Balfour got into trouble in the eight. McGee allowed one of the two runners he inherited to score, resulting in a blown save, and though he preserved the tie, he wasn't brought back out after the Rays scored twice in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead. McGee and Oviedo likely are the favorites for saves for however long the Rays stick with this odd committee they're using. They probably could have made things easier on themselves had they just bypassed Balfour entirely tonight and had McGee or Oviedo start the eighth. |
