Upton (foot) is nearing an extended spring training game and is on track to join the Padres in early-June, the Union-Tribune's Jeff Sanders reports.

He will likely get 40-50 minor league at-bats before joining the Padres, where he will serve as outfield depth. Upton's offensive struggles have been well-documented and he does not have an obvious path to playing time so it's best to take a wait-and-see approach with him in most formats.

Upton has been traded to the Padres in the blockbuster pre-Opening Day deal that also sent Craig Kimbrel to San Diego, as first reported by Kiley McDaniel from Fangraphs.

Upton is still out for the first month of the season, but when he returns he'll likely be the fourth outfielder for the Padres. The big consideration for the Braves is that they rid themselves of his contract.

Upton will be in a cast for two weeks and then will transition to a walking boot for another four-to-six weeks. From there, he will need to begin the rehab process before finally returning to the lineup. While the timetable could change, as of now he's slated to miss at least the first month of the season, but that absence could extend even longer.

Upton's (foot) test results revealed inflammation in his left foot. He will be in a cast for two weeks followed by a walking boot for 4-6 weeks.

Upton's timetable indicates he will miss Opening Day, and could miss a couple weeks to begin the season. He will now begin the healing process, but will miss all of spring training, so he will need to knock off some of the rust when he finally returns from the injury.

Upton is experiencing right foot discomfort and will be furhter evaluated, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.

Bowman also reports Upton will miss "more than just a few days. This doesn't exactly help Upton trying to get back on track, so he's even more of a fantasy stay away. Check back for more updates, as this could end up being a longer-term problem.

Upton will officially be known as "Melvin Upton Jr." going forward, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

Upton will answer questions about his name change after reporting to spring training later this week. More importantly, his work with new hitting coach Kevin Seitzer has reportedly gone well this offseason. Entering Year 3 of a five-year, $75.25 million pact with the Braves, Upton is looking to get back on track after hitting .208 with 173 strikeouts (despite 12 homers and 20 steals) last season.

Upton is out of the lineup Sunday against the Phillies.

With the Braves well out of the playoff chase, manager Fredi Gonzalez is resting many of his regulars, with Upton being one of them. Sunday's outfield will be composed of Ryan Doumit, Emilio Bonifacio and Joe Terdoslavich.

Upton is not in the lineup Thursday against the Pirates.

Prior to sitting Tuesday, Upton had started seven consecutive games for the Braves, but he'll head back to the bench Thursday as Emilio Bonifacio takes over in center field. Upton is batting just .189/.296/.293 since the All-Star break, and his struggles over the past two seasons surely had a lot to do with Frank Wren losing his job as general manager.

Upton is not in the lineup Tuesday versus the Pirates.

Upton will take a seat for the first time in seven games, conceding center field duties to Emilio Bonifacio against Pirates' starter Gerrit Cole. Upton is hitting .209 with 12 strikeouts in 43 September at-bats.

Upton is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rangers.

Including Sunday's game, Upton will now have started just just two of the last seven games in center field for the Braves. Emilio Bonifacio will supplant him once again Sunday.

Upton is not in the lineup Saturday against the Rangers.

Emilio Bonifacio will supplant Upton in center for the fourth time in six games. While Upton has launched a pair of homers already this month, he's batting a dismal .187/.298/.309 since the All-Star break and it seems manager Fredi Gonzalez may finally be at the end of his rope with the 30-year-old.

Upton went 1-for-4 with his 11th homer of the season in Wednesday's 6-2 win over the Nationals.

Upton parked a Stephen Strasburg pitch over the left field wall to begin the top of the fifth inning, his second homer of the month and fourth since the All-Star break. It was Upton's first start since last Saturday, as manager Fredi Gonzalez turned to Emilio Bonifacio to man center in the finale against Miami as well as the first two games against Washington. While it's uncertain how the playing time will be divvied up moving forward, Gonzalez has been loyal to Upton this season and Wednesday's performance likely earned Upton at least another start or two this week.

Upton is out of the Braves' lineup again Tuesday, David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

Upton will yield center-field duties to Emilio Bonifacio again Tuesday, marking the first time all season Upton has sat out three consecutive games. Manager Fredi Gonzalez has not tipped his hand as to how he plans to divvy up the playing time over the final 17 games, though it seems safe to say Bonifacio will be playing more frequently. Upton is batting just .206/.284/.327 through 538 plate appearances this season.

Upton is not in Monday's lineup.

Upton typically sits out one or two games per week, and he'll take a seat for the second game in a row Monday, with Emilio Bonifacio playing center field. Unless Upton is stealing bases, he's more harmful than helpful in fantasy, as his .206 batting average speaks to his current skills at the plate.

Upton is out of the lineup Sunday against the Marlins.

Upton has made four straight starts in center field, but will receive his second day of rest of the week in favor of Emilio Bonifacio. Batting just over the dreaded Mendoza line at .206 this season, it's only getting tougher for manager Fredi Gonzalez to justify keeping the speedy Upton atop the lineup as the team chases down one of the final Wild Card spots.

Batting eighth, Upton went 1-for-2 with two walks and a two-run home run to lead the Braves to a win over Philadelphia on Wednesday.

It's been a disappointing season for the outfielder, hitting .207/.285/.330 with 10 home runs and 33 RBI.

Upton is out of the lineup Thursday against the Mets.

As was the case late last season, it appears manager Fredi Gonzalez's patience is wearing thin with Upton and his lack of on-base skills. Upton will sit out for the third time in six games, making way for Emilio Bonifacio to handle center field.

Upton is 7-for-59 in the month of August with two home runs and just four RBI. He will yield the start Tuesday to Emilio Bonifacio, who will man center field and bat second for the Braves.
