Thu Jul 18 201318:27Colts worked out FA Randy McMichael in May
The Colts worked out free agent TE Randy McMichael back in May.
We missed this little tidbit of news at the time of the workout, but NFL.com's Ian Rapoport mentioned it again on Thursday following the news of Colts TE Weslye Saunders' eight-game suspension. McMike doesn't catch many passes anymore, but he's still an above-average blocker in both the run and pass games.

Chargers released TE Randy McMichael.
McMichael, going on age 34, was owed $1.5 million in salary and bonuses. He finished last season with nine receptions for 51 yards, functioning mostly as a blocker. The Chargers intended to get younger under rookie GM Tom Telesco.

Fri Mar 1 201318:07McMike a candidate to be cut or restructured
The Union-Tribune San Diego expects the Chargers to either release Randy McMichael or ask him to take a pay cut.
McMichael is due a $1.25 million salary in addition to a $250,000 roster bonus in the final year of his deal. The soon-to-be 34-year-old is a fine blocker, but he caught just nine passes for 51 yards last season, the lowest totals of his career. San Diego currently sits about $8 million over the salary cap.

Sat Mar 17 201216:30Bolts bring back veteran TE McMichael
Chargers re-signed TE Randy McMichael to a two-year contract.
McMichael broke the news himself on Twitter. The Chargers had been hoping to get younger behind Antonio Gates this offseason, but were greeted by an extremely thin tight end free agent market. Three months shy of his 33rd birthday, McMichael made 30 catches for 271 yards in 2011. The Bolts could be on the lookout for a tight end in next month's draft, but they won't be the only ones.

Mon Feb 27 201213:01McMichael 'unlikely' to be back in S.D.
The Union-Tribune San Diego considers it "unlikely" the Chargers re-sign free agent Randy McMichael.
The Chargers are hoping to get younger at tight end. Thanks in part to Antonio Gates' foot injury, McMichael caught 30 passes for 271 yards last season, but was called on primarily to block. He'll turn 33 in July.

Sun Oct 9 201120:07Randy McMichael gets four catches
Randy McMichael caught four passes for 29 yards in Sunday's win over the Broncos.
McMichael continues to be a low-upside outlet for Philip Rivers in place of Antonio Gates. In three starts this season, McMichael is averaging 3.6 catches for 35 yards with no touchdowns. Move along, especially with Gates possibly returning after the bye.

Sun Oct 2 201118:56McMichael down for Chargers
Randy McMichael left Sunday's game against the Dolphins in the fourth quarter with an undisclosed injury, but quickly returned.
McMichael was writhing in pain and looked to be clutching his right hand after a running play. He had just one catch for negative-two yards before leaving. Antonio Gates owners need to move on, even though McMichael looks to be OK.

Wed Sep 28 201110:27McMichael far from dominant when Gates out
In the seven games that Antonio Gates has missed over the last two seasons, Randy McMichael has averaged 2.4 catches for 27.1 yards with two total touchdowns.
At age 32, McMichael is a shell of the highly-athletic pass-catcher he was during his Miami days. Even though Philip Rivers likes to throw to his tight ends in the red zone and McMichael will see a full complement of snaps whenever Gates sits, we need to keep expectations in check. "McMike" is just a desperation TE1 play when starting.

Sun Sep 25 201119:29McMichael fills in for Gates nicely
With Antonio Gates (foot) sidelined, Randy McMichael caught four passes for 51 yards in Sunday's win over the Chiefs.
McMichael was targeted five times, with the lone miss coming on a crucial and ugly drop in the fourth quarter. The veteran appeared to have some gas left in the tank, taking a crossing pattern 26 yards in the second half. Gates' owners looking for insurance could do worse, but the upside is capped by McMike's 31-year-old body.

Tue Jul 26 201120:09Chargers agree to terms with Randy McMichael
Chargers agreed to terms with TE Randy McMichael on a one-year contract.
32-year-old "McMike" will return as Antonio Gates' backup after catching 20 passes for 221 yards and two TDs off the bench last season. He's lost most of his field-stretching skills and will be a weak fantasy option if Gates goes down again.

Thu Dec 16 201023:49McMichael posts season high yards, catches
Randy McMichael hauled in all five targets for 55 yards against the 49ers in Week 15.
The receptions and yards are easily season highs. McMichael has zero after-the-catch ability at this stage of his career, but his hands are still outstanding. He reeled in a one-handed catch and found plenty of room down the seam with Vincent Jackson drawing defensive attention. McMichael isn't a great bet to repeat the performance in Week 16.
Fri Nov 26 201018:03Randy McMichael probable, practices
Randy McMichael (hamstring, probable) returned to practice Friday.
McMike was held out of early-week practices, but appears on track to take Antonio Gates' (feet) starting spot against the Colts on Sunday night. Owners desperate at tight end should still look for healthier alternatives.

Wed Nov 24 201017:22Randy McMichael held out of practice
Chargers TE Randy McMichael (hamstring) was held out of practice Wednesday.
McMike was noticeably upset on the sideline after pulling his hamstring in last week's win over the Broncos. Assuming Antonio Gates (feet) is out on Sunday Night Football, Chargers tight ends are best left avoided in fantasy.

Tue Nov 23 201020:11McMichael expected to play in Week 12
Coach Norv Turner expects TE Randy McMichael (hamstring) to be available against the Colts in Week 12.
McMichael was sore Tuesday, and he'll be limited in practices throughout the week. There's going to be a high risk of aggravation Sunday, so McMichael isn't going to be a great fantasy play. Kory Sperry won't be worthy of a waiver addition this week.

Tue Nov 23 201015:09McMichael dealing with hamstring injury
Randy McMichael is expected to be limited in practice this week after sustaining a hamstring injury Monday night.
The Chargers' string of hamstring injuries of late rivals the Browns' staff infection outbreak of a few years back. Antonio Gates suggested that he'll need more time to let his plantar fascia heal, so Kory Sperry could end up starting at Indy this week.

Tue Nov 23 201001:10Randy McMichael injured in backup duty
Randy McMichael was held without a catch in Monday's Week 11 game.
McMichael suffered an early leg injury, but was able to return on a limited basis. He was visibly bothered by the injury, and had just one target on the night. There's been no word on the nature of severity of his injury. Kory Sperry saw a majority of the snaps at tight end on the night.
Mon Nov 22 201021:19McMichel reenters for two plays, then leaves
Randy McMichael briefly left Monday's game with a leg injury, returned for two plays, but then had to go to the locker room.
McMichael came back just in time for an end zone target, but had his look knocked away by CB Reynaldo Hill. He was seen dragging his leg following the play.
Thu Jun 3 201019:58Chargers sign veteran TE Randy McMichael
Chargers signed TE Randy McMichael to a one-year contract.
McMichael, turning 31 this month, hasn't finished in the top-30 among fantasy tight ends since breaking his tibia two years ago. He's certainly not going resurface on the fantasy radar behind Antonio Gates. He drew no interest on the open market after averaging less than 10 yards per catch last year.
