Thu Jul 26 201213:57Report: Addai 'quit' during conditioning test
A league source tells CSN New England that Joseph Addai "quit" his conditioning test after struggling to complete it.
We suspect the other 31 NFL teams will now be even more hesitant to take a chance on Addai, as his commitment level will be questioned. Much like Clinton Portis last summer, Addai has reached a point in his career where he's essentially a blitz-pickup specialist with little to offer as a runner. It's fair to question whether he'll play another snap in the league.

Wed Jul 25 201216:44Pats release RB Addai as training camp starts
Patriots released RB Joseph Addai.
The Pats wound up sinking $125,000 into Addai in the form of a signing bonus and offseason workout bonus. Addai was never going to help the Patriots as a ball carrier, but the 29-year-old can still pick up the blitz and always seemed likely to at least last into August. He didn't, which can be taking as a sign that Addai's career is on life support. New England will move forward with Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen, and Danny Woodhead atop the depth chart.

Mon Jul 23 201221:06'Word is' Addai looked unimpressive
According to the Boston Globe, "word is" Joseph Addai wasn't impressive in the Patriots' offensive program.
The Globe apparently took the "word" seriously enough that it doesn't project Addai to crack the Patriots' 53-man roster. ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss opined in June that Addai would likely go down as "one of the Patriots' best free agent signings," so there's clearly a difference of opinion on his future in New England. Barring a catastrophically bad preseason, Addai should have an inside track on a roster spot.

Tue Jul 3 201208:25Addai's chances of roster spot 80 percent?
ESPN Boston puts Joseph Addai's chances of cracking the Patriots' 53-man roster at 80 percent.
Reporter Mike Rodak believes Addai's closest competition for a roster spot will be Danny Woodhead, and reiterates he isn't expected to be a big contributor outside of pass protection. Provided Addai is healthy and doesn't look completely washed up in the preseason, he should break camp with the Pats.

Thu Jun 21 201214:38Addai signed primarily for blitz pickup
According to ESPN Boston, Joseph Addai was signed primarily due to the Patriots' renewed emphasis on improving blitz pickup this season.
"If all goes according to the coaching staff's plan, you'll be hearing a lot more about Stevan Ridley and Shane Vereen this year," writes ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss. The implication is that Addai will be limited to Kevin Faulk's old role as Tom Brady's personal protector on passing downs.

Sun Jun 10 201209:30Positive feedback on Patriots' Addai signing
ESPN's Mike Reiss thinks RB Joseph Addai will go down as one of the Patriots' best free agent signings.
Cimini calls Addai a "low-key, versatile, mentor-type professional" who compliments the younger Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen, and Danny Woodhead well. Assuming Addai makes the team, he'll only see a handful of touches if everything goes according to plan.

Tue May 15 201213:47Addai will have to earn a roster spot
Joseph Addai's one-year deal with the Patriots contains a non-guaranteed base salary of $725,000 and a roster bonus of $218,750.
In other words, Addai will have to earn his roster spot in training camp and preseason action. While he does receive a $75,000 signing bonus and a $50,000 workout bonus, the Pats are unlikely to pick up that roster bonus in September if he doesn't prove to be a more reliable option than Stevan Ridley and Shane Vereen.

Sun May 6 201210:05RB Addai not a lock to make Patriots' roster
ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss does not consider Joseph Addai a lock to make the Patriots' roster.
The Patriots carried five tailbacks last season, but could go with fewer this season after adding a third tight end, a trio of fullbacks, and a long list of veteran wide receivers. Still, it's unlikely that New England will head into 2012 with just three tailbacks, so Addai's roster spot should be safe. At best, he'll see a handful of carries and third down work. At worst, he'd simply be insurance behind Danny Woodhead, Stevan Ridley, and Shane Vereen.

Sat May 5 201218:46Report: Patriots sign former Colts RB Addai
Patriots signed RB Joseph Addai, formerly of the Colts.
Addai visited the Patriots last month, but otherwise received no other known interest on the free agent market. In New England, Addai's primary responsibilities will be relegated to third-down situations. Stevan Ridley remains the leading candidate for early-down work, while 2011 second-round pick Shane Vereen and Danny Woodhead are complementary, change-of-pace options.

Fri Apr 20 201216:57Report: Addai visits with the Patriots
Free agent Joseph Addai visited the Patriots, a source tells beat writer Shalise Manza Young.
Throw Addai into the over-the-hill gang of running backs the Patriots hosted Friday. At this point, it's thought that they're just looking at Ryan Grant, Tim Hightower and Addai for emergency kind of insurance. Addai has attracted no interest on the open market since getting dumped by the Colts.

Thu Apr 19 201214:05Colts not interested in re-signing Addai
Colts GM Ryan Grigson made it clear the team has little interest in re-signing free agents Joseph Addai, Dallas Clark, Gary Brackett, and Melvin Bullitt.
"At some point, maybe you revisit it," Grigson said. "We're confident with the decisions we made at the time. We still are and we're moving forward." The four Colts veterans have attracted little interest on the market and will likely have to wait until after the draft to catch on with a team.

Wed Mar 21 201208:44Addai could get a look from Broncos
The Denver Post believes free agent RB Joseph Addai "could get a look" from the Broncos.
It's a natural fit. A major injury risk and not much of a running threat at age 29, Addai isn't generating much interest from other teams. He remains a trusted pass protector and outlet receiver for Peyton Manning, however. Willis McGahee was rarely used on passing downs last season.

Fri Mar 9 201217:27Colts release RB Joseph Addai
Colts released RB Joseph Addai.
The team's Friday releases of Addai, MLB Gary Brackett, SS Melvin Bullitt, and TE Dallas Clark take the Colts off the hook for $14.83 million worth of 2012 base salaries. Per Brian McIntyre of Football Outsiders, however, the moves only save about $5 million in salary cap space. Addai can still pass protect and catch passes, but he lacks any hint of explosion in his lower body going on age 29. He's missed 12 games due to injury over the past two seasons.

Wed Mar 7 201212:26Owner Irsay: More cuts coming for Colts
Colts owner Jim Irsay indicated at Wednesday's Peyton Manning press conference that the team will have to make more roster moves just to sign draft picks this year.
Due $2.9 million in 2012 after being relegated to a complementary role in another injury-wrecked season, Joseph Addai is a prime candidate to be released. Dallas Clark, scheduled to earn nearly $5 million, could also be on the way out at age 33.

Sun Jan 1 201217:19Addai held to 19 yards in Week 17
Joseph Addai was held to 19 yards on eight carries against the Jaguars in Week 17.
Once again outproduced by Donald Brown, the six-year veteran finished the season with a career-low 433 yards and just one score on 118 rushes (3.67 YPC). The Colts are perhaps on the verge of a full-blown rebuilding project, leaving Addai's future up in the air with a salary approaching $5 million in 2012. Don't count on him landing a feature-back role at age 29.

Fri Dec 23 201100:00Addai starts, totals 67 yards in Week 16
Joseph Addai rushed 19 times for 59 yards and added one reception for eight yards against the Texans in Week 16.
Addai continues to start despite being thoroughly out-played by Donald Brown. For the first time in two months, Addai functioned as the feature back with Brown as the change-of-pace. For the fifth time in Addai's last seven games, he failed to surpass 3.3 yards per carry. He can't be trusted as more than a low-end flex for Week 17 at Jacksonville.

Sun Dec 18 201117:22Addai gets outshined by Brown in Colts win
Joseph Addai rushed 11 times for 20 yards, and added two catches for seven yards against the Titans in Week 15.
Addai started and was primarily used in the first half before being outperformed by Donald Brown. Coming off a two carry game in Week 14, he's in danger of seeing his role reduced scaled back over the final two weeks of the season.

Mon Dec 12 201109:41Plan was to use Joseph Addai sparingly
Joseph Addai admitted that his nagging hamstring injury contributed to his meager role in Sunday's Week 14 loss to the Ravens.
Addai ended up with just three touches on the day and came off the bench behind Donald Brown. "Going into the game, coach wanted me to rest and kind of take a little bit of (a break for) the hamstring and if we'd get in big third-down situations, that's when I'd go in," Addai said. "That was the game plan." We'd expect a similar plan against the Titans next week.

Sun Dec 11 201116:22Joseph Addai gets two carries in Week 14
Joseph Addai rushed twice for 16 yards as the Colts fell to the Ravens 24-10 in Week 14.
Addai was used sparingly, getting just the two touches while Delone Carter (five rushing attempts) and Donald Brown (10 touches) played ahead of him. Feel free to drop Addai for higher-upside fantasy fliers down the stretch.
