Wed Mar 23 2011 | 12:07 | Cubs make four roster cuts |
Cubs optioned LHP Scott Maine and Justin Berg to Triple-A Iowa; reassigned RHPs Todd Wellemeyer and Angel Guzman to minor league camp. |
Cubs manager Mike Quade was weighing whether to keep four left-handers in his bullpen to balance his all righty rotation, but he apparently thinks Sean Marshall, John Grabow and James Russell can do the job. Wellemeyer was slowed by a hip injury during camp while Guzman is coming back from shoulder surgery. |

Tue Aug 24 2010 | 16:49 | Cubs call up Scott Maine from Triple-A |
Cubs purchased the contract of LHP Scott Maine from Triple-A Iowa. |
Maine was acquired from the Diamondbacks in the Aaron Heilman trade last November. The 25-year-old left-hander had a 3.51 ERA in 33 relief appearances with Triple-A Iowa this season, posting a 47/21 K/BB ratio over 41 innings. He'll pitch out of the bullpen, but don't think of him as a left-handed specialist. His splits have fluctuated wildly throughout the minors, in part due to his spotty control. |
