RHP Jake Peavy (lower back strain) will be activated Wednesday. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list Aug. 27, retroactive to Aug. 21.

RHP Jake Peavy (sore lower back) had to be scratched from his scheduled start against the Atlanta Braves on Saturday and was placed on the 15-day disabled list. Peavy gave Giants manager Bruce Bochy a heads-up that his back was acting up Thursday, then reported Saturday morning that it had gotten worse, prompting the move.

RHP Jake Peavy returns to the starting rotation Saturday when he pitches for the San Francisco Giants against the Atlanta Braves. The veteran was pushed to the bullpen when the Giants acquired LHP Matt Moore at the trade deadline. But RHP Matt Cain has since come down with a sore back, reopening a spot for Peavy. The veteran, who had just one relief outing before this season, retired all six batters he faced, three on strikeouts. He's now allowed just one run in four innings of relief this season.

RHP Jake Peavy, a 15-year major league veteran, has swallowed his ego and moved to the bullpen. It happened after the Giants acquired starter Matt Moore at the trade deadline. Peavy, 35, allowed one run in his first four relief appearances, including consecutive outings on Monday and Tuesday. In those four appearances, Peavy has pitched a total of two innings as the Giants are using him in short bursts. Before this year, Peavy had not made a single relief appearance since 2011.

RHP Jake Peavy, who lost his spot in the rotation after the Giants traded for LHP Matt Moore, made the second relief appearance of his career on Wednesday against the Phillies, coming on in the 12th inning with runners at first and second and one out. He induced the first hitter he saw, Aaron Altherr, to hit a soft grounder to third base, but Eduardo Nunez committed an error on the play to load the bases. Maikel Franco followed with a game-winning single. Manager Bruce Bochy was nonetheless pleased with Peavy's outing. "Jake came in and got the ground ball," Bochy said. "We didn't handle it. ... He made a big pitch there to get the ground ball. Now we've got to face their guy."

RHP Jake Peavy failed to see the fifth inning for the fifth time this season in the Giants' 5-3 win over the Washington Nationals on Saturday. Peavy allowed five hits, including a home run, in four innings, leaving for a pinch hitter in the bottom of the fourth. Peavy is winless in his last four starts, having been roughed up for 15 runs in 19 1/3 innings.

RHP Jake Peavy will seek to even his career record against the Washington Nationals on Saturday when he starts the third game in a four-day series. Peavy's history against the Nationals dates back to their Montreal Expos days. His 10th career start with the San Diego Padres on Aug. 18, 2002 came against the Expos, and it didn't go well. He allowed eight runs in 3 1/3 innings in a 9-2 loss. Peavy has bounced back to record a 5-6 record and 4.07 ERA in 13 career starts against the Expos/Nationals.

RHP Jake Peavy had one of his distinctions wiped away in the Giants' 7-5 loss to the Cincinnati Reds on Monday night. Peavy, who suffered the loss in a 7-4 defeat at Cincinnati in May 4, had been unbeaten in his Giants career in starts against teams that had beaten him earlier in the season. He was 6-0 in those games, the Giants 7-0. But that streak came to an end mostly because of three Reds home runs, their fifth, sixth and seventh in the two games against Peavy this season.

RHP Jake Peavy makes his 20th start of the season Monday night when the Giants face the Cincinnati Reds. He is 7-1 with a 2.92 ERA in 13 career starts against the Reds and his teams are 11-2 in those games. Peavy's lone loss against the Reds occurred May 4 when he allowed seven earned runs and eight hits in six innings. Peavy last pitched Tuesday in Boston when he allowed four runs and three hits in six innings of a 4-0 loss.

RHP Jake Peavy's return to Fenway Park didn't go as planned. Peavy, a member of the Red Sox's 2013 World Series championship team, surrendered four runs -- including two homers -- three hits and a walk with six strikeouts in six innings. However, he received a standing ovation while throwing his warm-up pitches in the second inning. "That was awesome," he said. "I love Fenway Park and getting a chance to come back here as a visitor. Tonight was different because you're in compete mode and you're trying to find a way to win, but I certainly appreciate the fan response."

Peavy was pulled one out into the fifth, with the Giants clinging to a 3-2 lead. The San Francisco bullpen assured the team win, even if it didn't go on Peavy's personal ledger, with 4 2/3 innings of one-hit relief.

RHP Jake Peavy will be seeking an 18th career win against the Arizona Diamondbacks when he pitches the middle game of a three-game series Saturday. The veteran has more wins against Arizona than any other team, but hasn't added to his total in two starts against the Diamondbacks this season. He didn't get a decision in either game, but did allow four runs in five innings in a 9-7 loss when the clubs met in San Francisco on April 18. Peavy is 17-13 with a 4.47 ERA in 36 career starts against Arizona. The ERA is his highest against any National League team.

RHP Jake Peavy recorded the first Independence Day win of his 15-year career Monday in a 3-1 victory over the Rockies. Peavy extended his string of sharp performances to eight by allowing just one run on five hits over 6 2/3 innings. He is 4-2 with a 2.27 ERA in his past eight starts, a stretch in which opponents have hit just .215 against him.

RHP Jake Peavy (4-7) gave up seven runs -- just three of them earned -- on five hits over 3 2/3 innings in a 7-1 loss to Oakland on Wednesday. He walked two, struck out none allowed two-run homers to 2B Jed Lowrie and 1B Yonder Alonso. Peavy had won three of his previous four starts and allowed a combined eight earned runs in his previous six starts before facing Oakland. The Giants made all three of their errors while Peavy was in the game. "It was certainly a frustrating night just on all fronts," Peavy said. "We didn't play our best. Just one of those nights. Not fun to endure." Peavy is 2-2 with a 3.23 ERA in five career starts against the A's.

RHP Jake Peavy will be seeking to extend a string of well-pitched starts to seven Wednesday when he faces the Athletics in Oakland. Peavy has allowed only eight earned runs over 37 2/3 innings (1.91 ERA) in his last six starts. He has made four starts against the A's in his career, recording a 2-1 record and a 2.96 ERA.

RHP Jake Peavy continued his remarkable turnaround with another impressive effort in Friday's 5-4 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. Peavy allowed just two runs on seven hits over seven innings. Peavy has allowed only five earned runs in his last four starts after getting bombed for 38 in his first nine this season.

RHP Jake Peavy will try to improve on his impressive career statistics against the Los Angeles Dodgers when he faces the Giants' rival in the finale of a three-game series Sunday. Peavy has the most wins (14) and second-best ERA (2.50) against the Dodgers among all active pitchers. He's made 30 career starts against the Dodgers, going 14-3.

RHP Jake Peavy failed in his first attempt to become the fifth active pitcher with 150 career wins, losing 6-3 to the Cardinals on Sunday night. He carried a 3-1 lead into the sixth inning but gave up two doubles and a walk before he was pulled. The Cardinals went on to score four runs in the inning, dropping Peavy's record to 2-6.
