LF Marcell Ozuna went 0-for-3 but is still hitting .313 this season. He is also hitting .636 with 16 RBIs with bases loaded. His seven hits with the bases loaded -- a total that includes a double, triple and grand slam -- are second in the National League. Daniel Murphy of the Washington Nationals has nine bases-loaded hits.

RF Giancarlo Stanton went 0-for-2 on Thursday, but drew three walks as teams continue to pitch him carefully. He leads the majors in home runs with 33. He has 98 career homers at Marlins Park. His 12 homers in July ties Dan Uggla (2008 and 2012) for the club record for any month. The club record for home runs in one season is 42 by Gary Sheffield in 1996. Stanton is on pace for 53 homers this year.

RHP Leonel Campos allowed one run and one hit while striking out two in one inning during his rehab assignment with Class-A Dunedin on Thurday. Campos posted a 2.08 ERA in six games over 8 2/3 innings this season before landing on the disabled list with a groin injury.

RHP Brad Ziegler pitched a perfect inning during a rehab assignment with Class-A Jupiter on Thursday. Ziegler (1-2, 6.52 ERA in 29 innings) hasn't pitched for the Marlins since June 20 because of a back injury.

LHP J.A. Happ (3-7, 4.13 ERA) will be looking for his first win since July 4 at Yankee Stadium when he starts the opener of a three-game series against the Los Angeles Angels on Friday at the Rogers Centre. Happ is 0-2 with a 6.60 ERA in three starts since his last victory and the Blue Jays are 0-3 in those starts. He allowed four runs in the first inning Sunday in an 8-1 loss to the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field. Happ allowed nine hits and seven runs. He is 1-5 with a 6.52 ERA in six career starts against the Angels.

DH Kendrys Morales hit two home runs Thursday, including the game-tying blast in the ninth innings, in the 8-4 victory over the Oakland Athletics. He also hit the game-ending homer in the ninth inning Wednesday in the 3-2 win over Oakland. He has four home runs this season that have either tied the game or given the Blue Jays the lead in the ninth inning or later. He leads the majors with eight home runs in late and close situations.

INF/OF Steve Pearce hit a game-ending grand slam Thursday with two out in the bottom of the 10th inning to defeat the Athletics 8-4. It was the third walkoff grand slam in club history (C Gregg Zaun on Sept. 6, 2008 against the Tampa Bay Rays and LF George Bell on Sept. 4, 1988 versus the Texas Rangers). It was his second career grand slam and his first walkoff homer. "Hopefully we just keep the ball rolling," Pearce said. "We're getting down to the end of the season so we've got to step it up. And this was a great series to get it started."

RHP Marcus Stroman allowed a career-high six walks Thursday before being ejected in the fifth inning by plate umpire Will Little after a walk to Oakland Athletics C Bruce Maxwell in the fifth inning. Stroman and C Russell Martin were ejected after disputing the call. Manager John Gibbons had been ejected after ball two had been called on Maxwell. Stroman is known for pitching with emotion. "I want to make my next start," Stroman said, in offering no comment on the umpiring after the game. He said he does not intend to change. "I'm going to continue to be myself, "regardless of who doesn't like it, who likes it," he said. "I'm always going to be myself regardless, here on out. I'm emotional, that's how I pitch. That's what I pride myself on. That's what allows me to be my best out there." Stroman allowed six hits and three runs in 4 2/3 innings and did not factor in the decision in the game won by the Blue Jays 8-4 in 10 innings.

C Josh Phegley (left oblique strain) was put on the 10-day disabled listThursday. He has appeared in 47 games with the A's this year, including 37 starts at catcher. He is hitting just .169 over his last 28 games after batting .250 over his first 19 contests. He was a late scratch from the game Wednesday because of tightness in the left oblique. Manager Bob Melvin said oblique injuries usually are not a short-term issue, so there is no time line for Phegley's expected return.

RHP John Axford was designated for assignment Thursday when the contact of C Ryan Lavarnway was selected from Triple-A Nashville. He was on the Opening Day roster but did not appear in a game before he was placed on the 10-day disabled list retroactive to April 2 with a strained right shoulder. He was reinstated May 20 and went 0-1 with a 6.43 ERA and .310 opponents batting average in 22 relief appearances. Axford walked 17 batters in 21 innings while striking out 21. He is 34-33 with 144 saves and a 3.71 ERA in 493 career appearances in nine seasons with Milwaukee (2009-13), St. Louis (2013), Cleveland (2014), Pittsburgh (2014), Colorado (2015) and Oakland (2016-17). "That was a tough one," manager Bob Melvin said. "Everyone is really fond of John Axford around here. Admittedly, even he would tell you his performance this year hasn't been great up to this point, but if you're around us and understand who he is, he's a great resource for younger players, he handles himself beautifully in the clubhouse. He's all about the team. ... I'd be surprised if he didn't get a chance (with another team) this year. He still throws 97 mph, he's just having a little trouble locating, he's closed before. We will miss him around here, we wish him the best. My guess is he'll sign somewhere else."

C Ryan Lavarnway was selected from Triple-A Nashville on Thursday to replace C Josh Phegley (left oblique strain), who went on the disabled list Thursday. RHP John Axford was designated for assignment Thursday to make room for Lavarnway on the 40-man roster. Lavarnway has appeared in one game with Oakland this year, going 0-for-2 on July 7 while Phegley was away from the team on paternity leave. He was originally selected July 5 and designated for assignment July 8 before being outrighted to Nashville on July 14. He is hitting .262 with six home runs and 25 RBI in 67 games with the Sounds.

RHP JC Ramirez pitched well enough to win, but instead got saddled with a 2-1 loss to the Indians. Ramirez threw 108 pitches in 6 2/3 innings, giving up two runs on five hits, with four strikeouts and six walks. "He pitched a really good game. The only bump in the road were the walks," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "But other than that, he made pitches and got out of jams."

SS Marcus Semien was 3-for-4 with an RBI single Thursday in the 8-4, 10-inning loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. It was his second game this season with at least three hits. He had four hits Friday against the New York Mets.

1B C.J. Cron accounted for the Angels' only run, with a two-out RBI single in the fifth inning off RHP Trevor Bauer. In 10 career games against the Indians, Cron is hitting .385, with three doubles and three RBIs.

3B Luis Valbuena struck out to end the game, but Valbuena still had an outstanding series in Cleveland. In the three games Valbuena, who played for the Indians from 2009-11, batted .455 with two doubles, two home runs, and two RBIs.

RHP Yusmeiro Petit will come out of the bullpen and start Saturday's game in Toronto for the Angels, who have eight pitchers on the disabled list. It will be Petit's first start since June 20 of last year, when while with Washington, he was the starter and losing pitcher in a 4-1 loss to the Dodgers. When he starts Saturday, Petit will have gone 54 consecutive relief appearances between starts. In 36 relief appearances for the Angels this year he is 2-0, with a 2.70 ERA.

SS Andrelton Simmons singled in the seventh inning to extend his hitting streak to eight games. During his streak, Simmons is 11-for-22 with two homers and four RBIs.

RHP Trevor Bauer picked a good time to pitch a season-high eight innings Thursday. It came on a day when manager Terry Francona wasn't going to use two of his top relievers, LHP Andrew Miller and RHP Bryan Shaw, both of whom needed a day off. Bauer responded by throwing 116 pitches in eight innings, allowing one run on seven hits, with six strikeouts and one walk. "Boy did (Bauer) clutch up. He got out of a couple of jams and competed like crazy. He really got after it," Francona said.

1B Carlos Santana's solo home run in the second inning was the 164th homer of his career. That moved him past Ken Keltner and into 11th place on the Indians' all-time home run list. No.10 on that list is Rocky Colavito, with 190 homers. In the month of July, Santana is batting a team-high .328, with eight doubles, four home runs, and 13 RBIs in 67 at-bats.

SS Francisco Lindor, who hit better than .300 in his first two years in the league, may not get there this year, but he is making a surge. Lindor, who drove in what became the winning run with an RBI single in the seventh inning, had hits in all seven games in the Indians' 7-0 homestand. Lindor hit .393 in those seven games. After hitting .214 in June, Lindor is hitting .312 in July. Lindor's low water mark came on the Fourth of July, when his average was a season-low .246. Since then he is hitting .355 to raise his season average to .267.
