Left field isn't an option right now, 2B Ian Kinsler is solid at his position so that means third base, currently held by 3B Casey McGehee, and short are the only possibilities. "He's taking some ground balls at third base now because we could use him at third," Ausmus said, "but he's only played I think one game in his major league career at third base. We'll just see how it goes. We're not locking into anything. I wouldn't say it's going to be daily. We have to see how he looks over there (third base)." Aybar might have shown his newness to Detroit by missing a hit-and-run sign in the fifth, when he took a pitch with C James McCann being thrown out trying to steal. Being unfamiliar with the signs might have been a factor.

SS Erick Aybar homered and had two hits Tuesday against the Twins. It was his first home run since he hit one Aug. 11 against Milwaukee when he was a member of the Braves. Aybar has five hits over his past two starts.

Aybar, obtained Wednesday from the Atlanta Braves, singled in the first with one out and doubled in the eighth in the middle of the three-run rally that gave Detroit its 4-3 win over Boston. The run he scored after doubling was the 600th of his career.

Aybar, 32, hit .242 with two homers and 26 RBIs in 97 games with the Braves after coming from Los Angeles in the deal that sent SS Andrelton Simmons to the Angels. Aybar got off to a show start, but hit .360 in his final 19 games with the Braves.

Aybar, a Gold Glove Award winner at shortstop in 2011, was a member of the American League All-Star team while with the Los Angeles Angels in 2014. This season, he is hitting .242 with two homers in 97 games. With Tigers shortstop Jose Iglesias on the 15-day disabled list due to a left hamstring strain, Aybar is expected to get playing time at shortstop. Aybar might also play some third base with regular third baseman, Nick Castellanos, likely to be sidelined the rest of this month with a broken left hand.

SS Erick Aybar drove in Atlanta's only run Sunday and has hit safely in 18 of his last 19 games. Aybar is hitting .365 (27-for-74) during the stretch.
