LHP Christian Friedrich wasn't especially happy after giving up four runs and nine hits over five innings in the 4-0 loss Thursday to Pittsburgh -- especially with two pitches he made to Pirates 3B David Freese, who had an RBI double and RBI single. "Similar to (the) last start, (it) just a couple bad pitches," he said. "A fastball (to Freese), was supposed to be down and away and I just left it up. ...I feel pretty good; (I)njust would be happier trying to go deeper into games, obviously, and would like to knock out some of those big-run innings."

LHP Christian Friedrich couldn't avoid the big inning Tuesday, allowing four consecutive hits to the top of the Arizona lineup in the third and letting all four score, the final three on Rickie Weeks Jr.'s deep home run to center. "It was the worst pitch at the wrong time," Friedrich said. Padres manager Andy Green said Friedrich was inches from escaping further damage but left a breaking ball to Paul Goldschmidt just over the plate instead of inside. "The curveball was the right pitch there, you just have to execute it."

RHP Christian Friedrich needed 39 pitches to get through the third inning, almost assuring he wouldn't pitch deep into the game. But, he pitched well aside from the third inning in which he allowed all four of his runs. "I started rushing from one pitch to the next," Friedrich said. "I left that pitch to Duvall up. It's nice knowing (the bullpen) can come in behind me and do the job."

"I didn't know I went a whole year last year without a win put of the pen," said Friedrich, who made 68 relief appearances for the Rockies last season before signing a minor league deal with the Padres this spring. "I thought maybe I snaked one in. It's definitely nice to hear. I wouldn't be in the spot I am in if they hadn't given me an opportunity to start here. Very grateful." Friedrich, who will get an extended look in the rotation, had an extra day between starts because of a Padres' off days and worked with pitching coach Darren Balsley. "He has a fastball that plays up," manager Andy Green said. "Now, he's given an opportunity and he's going to have to run with it. We believe in him or we wouldn't be giving him a chance." Friedrich worked around a walk to record the final two outs of the seventh inning in Wednesday's 3-1 loss to the Diamondbacks.
Friedrich entered the game with one out and the bases loaded, but did well to mitigate the damage. After coaxing a sacrifice fly from David Peralta, Friedrich re-loaded the bases with a walk to Jarrod Saltalamacchia, before generating a ground out from Jake Lamb to end the threat. The 28-year-old has been manager Walt Weiss' go-to option against left-handed batters, whom he's held to a .256/.320/.339 mark on the season.

Friedrich recorded his eighth hold of the season after recording one out in the seventh inning of Wednesday's win over the Braves.
Friedrich has been used in five of the last six days, so he should benefit from Thursday's team off day. As a left-hander, Friedrich is typically used only situationally, so his pitch counts haven't really been especially burdensome. The 27-year-old has been one of the more trusted relievers in a beleaguered bullpen, in spite of his rather unimpressive 5.44 ERA, 1.69 WHIP, and 38:19 K:BB ratio over 51.1 innings.
