CF Tyler Collins was given a start Monday under manager Brad Ausmus' plan to keep his bench as sharp as possible. Collins and the player he subbed for, CF Anthony Gose, both hit left-handed. "You have to play your guys once in a while because you want them to be ready if you need them," Ausmus said. "If your regulars are healthy, it's going to be a challenge." Collins did not look out of place in center, catching seven fly balls, with a couple being difficult. Collins went 0-for-3 at the plate, however.

OF Tyler Collins appears to have won a spot on the Tigers' Opening Day roster after the club optioned Wynton Bernard to Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday. Manager Brad Ausmus stopped short of saying Collins was a certainty but said "he's in the driver's seat." Collins entered Tuesday batting .318 at spring training and Bernard was batting .212."Tyler Collins has overall played well," Ausmus said. "But, also, Wynton, he needs more development. He's come a long way in two years. We feel like he's got a chance to be a major-league player. But he needs to go down there and learn."

Collins smacked two doubles and finished 3-for-4 in Sunday's loss to Minnesota. He scored the team's only run.

It was his first extra-base hit and multi-hit game since September 16. He'd been mired in a 1-for-19 slump since that game, so we're not convinced he'll bring you any late-season value.

Collins is back in the lineup Sunday against the Twins. He'll play left field and bat seventh for the Tigers.

Collins had sat out the previous four games in favor of Rajai Davis, who seems to have taken over the bulk of the duties in left field. The 25-year-old is batting 14-for-56 (.250) with a homer and five RBI in September.

Collins is not in the lineup Wednesday for the second straight day.

Collins started seven games in a row in left field between Sept. 15 and Sept. 21, but he tallied just three hits during that span, and has been held out the last two days in favor of Rajai Davis.

Collins will make his fourth straight start in left field Saturday against the Royals.

With the Tigers all but eliminated from playoff contention, manager Brad Ausmus appears inclined to take a longer look at Collins down the stretch, which comes at the expense of Rajai Davis. Although Davis is expected to see at-bats versus left-handers, Collins figures to receive the starts in left for the majority of what remains of the season.

Collins went 2-for-4 with a solo homer in Saturday's 6-0 victory over the Indians.

Collins is now hitting .421 (8-for-19) in five September contests, although Saturday's homer marked his first since June 17, a span of 82 at-bats. After a mediocre August that saw him generate a .227/.239/.288 slash line, Collins will look to close the season out in stronger form during his occasional starts in the outfield.

Collins went 3-for-5 with a double, a run scored, and an RBI in Thursday's loss to the Royals.

Collins continues to occupy the larger portion of the timeshare in left field with Rajai Davis, but his overall body of work isn't especially impressive. Against right-handed pitching, Collins is slashing .258/.282/.400 for an 84 wRC+, which indicates he's producing at a level 16 percentage points below the league average.
