Tue Mar 26 201906:17Orioles' Cobb to miss opener, goes on injured list
With opening day just around the corner, the list of notable players who are going to be absent keeps growing.World Series MVP Steve Pearce will start the season on the injured list for the Boston Red Sox, and Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Steven Souza Jr. went down with a knee injury Monday night when he slipped on home plate.Earlier in the day, Baltimore put scheduled opening-day starter Alex Cobb on the 10-day injured list with a strained right groin.Pearce exited an exhibition game last weekend due to discomfort in his left calf. The right-handed batter normally platoons with lefty-hitting Mitch Moreland at first base, but the Red Sox will begin defense of their championship Thursday in Seattle without Pearce."We have to do it that way," manager Alex Cora said. "It makes sense for us, it makes sense for him. He should be back sooner rather than later but he won't be ready for Seattle, so why take a chance?"Sam Travis will likely make the team and take Pearce's spot on the opening-day... [More]

Tue Mar 5 201913:37Orioles' Brandon Hyde hopes approach translates into wins
SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) — Brandon Hyde's style is totally different from his Baltimore Orioles' predecessor.Under Buck Showalter, who had managed the Orioles for more than eight seasons until his dismissal at the end of last year, it was all business during spring training. There are more light moments under Hyde, though he says is focused on teaching and preparing for the season. When players began workouts they heard music blaring on the practice fields. Even beards, which had been long prohibited, are now welcomed.Hyde has run spring training in both the minor and major leagues, most recently with the Chicago Cubs, and he doesn't want preparation to equal drudgery."When you've been a minor league coach, and you've been on Field 76 in the back, and it's 97 degrees out, and there's no music, I know what that feels like," Hyde said.Hyde's methods have been welcomed by veteran players."I like what we're trying to accomplish this year as far as the environment we're trying to set and the type... SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) — The sun wasn't shining on Brandon Hyde's first workout as Baltimore Orioles' manager.Rain delayed the start of workouts Wednesday for about an hour. But eventually, 15 pitchers threw bullpens and the Orioles rolled out some new cameras to help the team evaluate them.Baltimore has three confirmed starters: Dylan Bundy, Andrew Cashner and Alex Cobb. Last week, the Orioles signed Nate Karns, who didn't pitch in 2018. They hope he can be their fourth starter, and there's spirited competition for the fifth spot."I think it's pretty open," Hyde said. "It's a great opportunity for everybody in camp. A lot of jobs to be won."Few spots on a team attempting to rebound from a franchise-worst 115 loss season are accounted for."It's just going to be a ton of evaluating," the 45-year-old Hyde said.Besides Karns, David Hess and Yefry Ramirez, who finished last year in Baltimore's rotation, will be in the mix. Josh Rogers, a left-hander obtained from the New York Yankees in the trade... [More]

Fri Aug 10 201815:23FANTASY PLAYS: Deep-season baseball targets on waivers
Fantasy baseball trade deadlines have either passed or are about to pass and even this deep into the season, there's still value on many waiver wires. Here are a few players that can help you in the long and short term.PLAYERS TO PICK UPRYAN MADSON, RP, Washington Nationals (20 percent owned in CBS Sports leagues) — Madson's season long peripheral stats may not impress, but with Kelvin Herrera on the DL, he'll temporarily take over as closer. Madson has experience closing out games and could provide a few weeks of save opportunities. Bid aggressively if you want to grab him off the waiver wire.RANDALL GRICHUK, OF, Toronto Blue Jays (28 percent) — Some considered Grichuk a deep sleeper coming into the 2018 season but he slumped early on. By July 13 he had a .199 batting average. He's turned things around since then, batting .310 with five homers and 14 RBIs. He probably won't continue to hit for high average, but his power bat could help you down the stretch.MANUEL MARGOT, OF, San Diego... [More]
