Wed Jun 20 201802:21LEADING OFF: Giants need hand in bullpen, Felix in the Bronx
A look at what's happening around the majors today:NEED A HANDThe Giants are looking for answers at the back of the bullpen after closer Hunter Strickland broke his hand Monday night punching a door in frustration. Strickland blew a save in a 5-4 loss to Miami, then cost himself six to eight weeks with his postgame outburst. Manager Bruce Bochy said Strickland had shown maturity and progress keeping his emotions in check since a fight last year with Nationals star Bryce Harper, leading Bochy to feel "thoroughly disappointed" by this injury. Sam Dyson and Tony Watson will be called upon for closing duties, with one getting most of the opportunities, though Bochy didn't reveal which one that would be. The manager doesn't consider Mark Melancon — signed to a $62 million, four-year deal before last season to work the ninth — ready for the role after a series of injuries.KING OF THE BRONXFelix Hernandez (6-6, 5.44 ERA) pitches for Seattle at Yankee Stadium in the middle game of a series between... Tue Jun 19 201802:16The Fastball Paradox: With velocity up, fastballs on decline
NEW YORK (AP) — Over five seasons as ace of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Gerrit Cole threw one of the game's hardest, heaviest fastballs, and he threw it often. The pitch helped him make millions of dollars. It put him in contention for major awards. Hitters swung through it again and again, and Cole seemed content not to mess with a good thing. But when Cole was traded to the Houston Astros this offseason, a funny thing happened. He became more frugal with his fastball and ended up more overpowering than ever.Cole has joined some of the game's best pitchers — including Cleveland's Corey Kluber and the Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw — in benefiting from a puzzling baseball paradox: In an era when pitchers are throwing harder than ever, they're maximizing success by using fewer fastballs.Pitchers — even ones with blazing fastballs like Luis Severino and Chris Archer — are using more offspeed than ever recorded, and while many aces think the downturn is a trend, some believe baseball could be entering... Fri Jun 15 201817:55Mauer returns to lineup for slumping Twins
CLEVELAND (AP) — Joe Mauer didn't receive any gifts for returning from a lengthy stint on the disabled list. No, his reward was an immediate matchup against two-time Cy Young winner Corey Kluber."Yeah, welcome back, right?" Mauer said with a laugh. The six-time All-Star returned to the lineup on Friday after missing 25 games with a strained neck and concussion-like symptoms sustained when he was injured diving for a foul ball last month. And while facing Kluber might not be an ideal first step back, the struggling Twins, who have one of the league's weakest offenses, were thrilled to have Mauer back in their lineup."It's good for any manager to have a chance to put a guy like Joe's name down there," said manager Paul Molitor, who had Mauer batting first against Kluber in the opener of a three-game series against the AL Central-leading Indians. "Yeah, he's in a good place, he's excited to be here and we welcome him back. Hopefully, he can give us a little bit of a boost."The Twins came in seven... [More]

He'll face Reds righty Anthony DeSclafani (0-1, 7.20).ACES OUTTwo star pitchers were officially put on the disabled list Saturday: Washington's Stephen Strasburg and the Yankees' Masahiro Tanaka. A look at what's happening around the majors today:WELCOME BACKGiants lefty Madison Bumgarner makes his season debut, more than two months after a line drive broke the pinkie on his pitching hand in a spring training game. The ace rejoins a San Francisco team that has hovered around .500, but has won four in a row and is right in the middle of an NL West race where no one has seized control. Bumgarner struck out 15 in 8 1/3 innings of two minor league outings.
