When Gurriel returns, he will serve a five-game suspension imposed by Major League Baseball for making an inappropriate gesture toward Dodgers pitcher Yu Darvish during the World Series.Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow said Gurriel's hand was broken before he came to camp. Luhnow said he did not know the original cause of the fracture."It was non-symptomatic until recently and he started to feel something," Luhnow said. "Once you start feeling something, the right course of action is to just remove it because it's a pretty reliable surgery, and we know what the outcome is going to be."The 33-year-old Gurriel hit .299 with 18 homers and 75 RBIs last year in his first full season in the majors. And three of the five jobs in the rotation are open, with more than a dozen pitchers having a shot to make the starting staff.Mattingly and his coaches will spend spring training evaluating the candidates, including several prospects acquired in trades during the Marlins' offseason payroll purge. Not among the rotation contenders to begin the season: injury-plagued left-hander Wei-Yin Chen, the Marlins' highest-paid pitcher as he enters the third season of an $80 million, five-year contract. He is not expected to be ready for opening day, but the... [More]

RHP Odrisamer Despaigne has been a valuable pitcher for the Marlins this year, sometimes as the long man out of the bullpen and even getting one save. He will make his third start of the year at home Thursday against the Philadelphia Phillies. "Really valuable from the standpoint of he can do a number of things," manager Don Mattingly said. "He has been the long guy; he allows you to use the other bullpen guys maybe spot up, use two guys in an inning to try to get out of something. He is also a guy who has been able to step in and start, and also a guy who has closed a game for us. I think the main thing is he is rubber-armed. We can use him almost every day as long as he is not throwing (too many pitches). I think if you have a couple of guys like that out there it helps you out over the course of the season, protecting guys." He is 0-1 with a 3.70 ERA in 11 games overall for Miami in 2017. In his last start, he went six innings and gave up three hits and one run against the San Diego Padres.
