DeShields will hit the DL with a strained hamstring, which forced him out of Sunday's game. It's not likely to be something that entails an extended absence, but the outfielder will miss at least a couple of weeks. In a corresponding move, the Rangers called up Rougned Odor from Triple-A Round Rock, and Odor is in the starting lineup at second base Monday.

DeShields left Sunday's game with a hamstring injury, and he underwent a precautionary MRI following the game. While the team is yet to release the results of the MRI, DeShields will be held out Monday, as Joey Gallo shifts over to left field after manning third base each of the last three days.

It looked as though DeShields would be crunched for at-bats after Josh Hamilton (shoulder) returned to make his season debut in late May, but with Hamilton since going back on the DL with a hamstring issue, the playing time has since opened back up. With a .370 on-base percentage and a 13-for-14 success rate on stolen bases this season, DeShields has earned his keep at the top of the order, and should remain an ample source of runs with the hot-hitting Shin-Soo Choo and Prince Fielder checking in behind him.

While he remains an option to play second base when needed, DeShields is unlikely to get starts at the position, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.

DeShields played second base for the last three innings of Wednesday's blowout loss to the Indians, but the Rangers don't want him trying to learn a new position in the middle of the season, plus they hope to eventually promote Rougned Odor. While DeShields could get a few more appearances at the keystone in late-game situations, it sounds as if he'll mostly still be limited to splitting time with Leonys Martin in center field. DeShields is also the fourth outfielder, so he'll have opportunities to start alongside Martin when Josh Hamilton or Shin-Soo Choo are rested/injured.

DeShields could start to see more action at second base going forward, MLB Network Radio reports. "I can see him getting enough ABs to keep him engaged in that leadoff spot for us," manager Jeff Bannister said. "It was nice to see him at second base."

DeShields split time between center field and second base in Wednesday's game, and with Leonys Martin healthy, second might be the best way for DeShields to get into the lineup on a consistent basis. As long as he's seeing somewhat regular playing time and leading off for the Rangers, his speed warrants ownership in deeper formats.

With starting center fielder Leonys Martin recently returning from a wrist injury, a transition to second base may provide DeShields his easiest path to regular at-bats. DeShields, 22, is having an impressive rookie season offensively, with a .265 batting average and .378 on-base percentage in 32 games, along with 11 stolen bases in 12 attempts. While DeShields primarily played outfield in the minor leagues, his father, Delino DeShields Sr., mostly played second base throughout his 13-year MLB career. The Rangers have mostly used Thomas Field and Adam Rosales at second base the past few weeks, but neither has been productive at the plate.

DeShields started in left field alongside Leonys Martin on Sunday and went 1-for-4 out of the No. 2 spot in the lineup, with a run scored and his 10th stolen base of the season.

The 22-year-old speedster's presence in the lineup alongside Martin, rather than being displaced, bodes well for his fantasy value, as he has been stealing bases and scoring runs at a high rate as a regular player. He could lose at-bats in a suddenly crowded Rangers outfield once Josh Hamilton returns next week, but if DeShields continues produce at this rate, the team can't afford not to play him.

He is now 9-for-10 on stolen-base attempts this season and in deeper leagues he has made up for the fact that he is hitting just .222 on the season. However, once Leonys Martin (who was used as a pinch-runner Tuesday) is healthy, DeShields could see his playing time severely reduced.

Rua is expected to land on the 15-day DL with his injury, leaving more at-bats for DeShields and Jake Smolinski. Shin-Soo Choo (back spasms) also left early Friday, which could open up two spots for the next few days. Carlos Peguero was removed from the game at Triple-A Round Rock early Friday night, making it likely that he'll join the bench for Saturday's game against Houston.

DeShields has secured a 25-man roster spot with the Rangers out of camp, Stefan Stevenson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.

DeShields was selected in the Rule 5 draft out of the Astros' organization in the offseason, and apparently showed enough in camp to earn a spot. He's expected to serve mostly as a bench player, but if an injury occurs, it's possible he would see regular time. If that becomes the case, he's got the speed to rack up stolen bases should he get on at a reasonable clip, but expectations should be tempered.

DeShields remains in contention to break camp with Texas, the team's web site reports.

DeShields must be offered back to the Astros if he doesn't make the team out of spring training as a Rule 5 selection.

Despite the setback, DeShields still finished the year with a .346 OBP, 11 homers and a Texas League-leading 54 stolen bases. It wasn't enough to convince the Astros that he warranted protection from the Rule 5 draft, but his speed and on-base skills may put him in the discussion for a role in the Rangers' outfield.
