Fri Apr 1 202210:18Red Sox Encouraged By James Paxton's Progress
The Boston Red Sox are encouraged about the progress of starting pitcher James Paxton (elbow) in his recovery from Tommy John surgery. Paxton is ahead of schedule and is already throwing short bullpen sessions. The 33-year-old left-hander had elbow reconstruction last April and isn't expected to be ready to go on a rehab assignment until sometime this summer, which is why the Red Sox placed him on the 60-day injured list to begin the season. Paxton made just one start last year for the Seattle Mariners and only five starts the previous season with the New York Yankees. In his last full season in 2019, he had a 3.82 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, 186 strikeouts and 55 walks in 29 starts over 150 2/3 innings for the Yanks.

Tue Sep 28 202108:08James Paxton Throws From 60 Feet On Monday
Seattle Mariners starting pitcher James Paxton (elbow) extended his throwing range on Monday, playing catch from 60 feet. He'd been throwing from shorter distances for two weeks prior to Monday. Paxton underwent Tommy John surgery in April and is in the midst of the long post-surgery recovery. If he continues to progress well, he could be ready for MLB action around midseason next year. The Mariners signed Paxton to a one-year deal this past offseason and he suffered his season-ending injury just 24 pitches into his first start of 2021. It's yet to be seen as to whether the 32-year-old will return to the Mariners next year or hit the free agency market again.

Thu May 13 202102:16Top Mariners prospects Kelenic, Gilbert coming up to majors
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Seattle Mariners' future arrives Thursday. Two major parts of it, anyway. The Mariners will call up touted outfield prospect Jarred Kelenic and promising right-hander Logan Gilbert before Seattle's home series opener against Cleveland, manager Scott Servais confirmed Wednesday night after a 7-1 loss to the Dodgers. Gilbert will be on the mound at T-Mobile Park on Thursday to make his major league debut. “It’ll be an exciting day for those young players tomorrow,” Servais said. “Looking forward to having them on our roster and see what they can do. They’ve both got bright futures.” The Mariners didn't immediately announce all of their transactions, but Servais said they are optioning outfielder Taylor Trammell back to the minors, and the club is likely to add a third player as well. After AL Rookie of the Year Kyle Lewis, Evan White and Justin Dunn led a wave of young talent reaching Seattle last season, Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto decided the time is right... [More]

Wed Apr 14 202102:20LEADING OFF: Cubs managing COVID scare, Musgrove vs Bucs
A look at what's happening around the majors today: ___ VIRUS SCARE The Chicago Cubs hope to stay on schedule amid a coronavirus scare that’s landed four players on the COVID-19 injured list the past two days. Scheduled starter Kyle Hendricks was scratched Tuesday after the right-hander indicated he wasn’t feeling well — the team didn’t immediately provide more info on his status, other than to say the move was made out of caution. The team said prior to Tuesday's game that no players have tested positive. Bullpen coach Chris Young and first base coach Craig Driver have been flagged for positive tests. Chicago is set to wrap a series in Milwaukee, with Brewers ace Corbin Burnes (0-1, 0.73) facing Jake Arrieta (2-0, 2.25). Tue Apr 13 202115:40Mariners left-hander Paxton to undergo season-ending surgery
BALTIMORE (AP) — Seattle Mariners left-hander James Paxton will undergo season-ending surgery, manager Scott Servais said Tuesday. Paxton left his April 6 start — his first since returning to Seattle on a 1-year, $8.5 million deal — with left elbow discomfort. Paxton received a second opinion Monday, when the need for surgery was confirmed. “It’s a blow,” Servais said. “This is a guy who is a top-end starter, a top-of-the-rotation type of guy. Certainly nothing against our other guys, but they just don’t have the experience and the track record that Pax has accumulated over his time in the big leagues. It’s disappointing to lose him. On the flip side, you can’t do anything about it.” The 32-year-old Paxton pitched for Seattle from 2013 to 2018, going 41-26 with a 3.42 ERA. He spent the past two seasons with the New York Yankees, but was limited to five starts in 2020 because of a left flexor strain. “I feel terrible for Pax and having to deal with this one again,” Servais said. “If I know...
