Fri Mar 27 202021:11MLB final pitch could be closer to Christmas than Halloween
NEW YORK (AP) — If the final pitch of the 2020 baseball season comes closer to Christmas than Halloween, that's fine with the players.Major League Baseball owners ratified a 17-page agreement with the union on Friday in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, with players willing to extend the season as long as needed to cover as close to a full schedule as possible.Even if it involves neutral sites in warm-weather cities and domes. Even if it involves playing in empty ballparks. Even if it involves lots of day-night doubleheaders. And if it means expanding the playoffs from 10 teams, fine.“Players want to play. That's what we do,” said union head Tony Clark, a former All-Star first baseman. “Being able to get back on the field and being able to play, even if that means their fans are watching at home, but being able to play for their fans is something they've all expressed a desire and an interest to do, and to do so as soon as possible."The deal provides for $170 million in advances from... NEW YORK (AP) — Mookie Betts and all the players set to be free agents after the 2020 season would still get that chance if there is no baseball this year, part of a broad deal being negotiated by the commissioner's office and the players' association. If there's no season because of the new coronavirus, the agreement would credit major leaguers with the same service time this year that they earned in 2019, a person familiar with the talks told The Associated Press on Wednesday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because talks were ongoing. Trevor Bauer, Marcus Stroman, George Springer, JT Realmuto also would be eligible for free agency, even if the season is canceled.Betts, the 2018 AL MVP, was acquired by the Dodgers from Boston last month for outfielder Alex Verdugo and two prospects. Thu Mar 19 202020:29Red Sox ace Chris Sale to have Tommy John surgery
BOSTON (AP) — Boston Red Sox ace Chris Sale will have Tommy John surgery on his left elbow, an operation that would keep him out the entire 2020 baseball season if and when it resumes after the coronavirus pandemic.“There’s no real way to sugarcoat this. It's not what anyone wants,” Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom told reporters on Thursday night. “Chris is the type of player that you just can’t replace. He’s an elite player. If he’s unavailable to us, that’s a blow.”The announcement comes two weeks after saying Sale had a flexor strain near the elbow. At the time, the Red Sox hoped Sale would avoid the operation that usually requires at least a full year of rehab. Bloom said it usually takes 14-15 months to recover. “Generally, 12 months is aggressive,” he said. “Some guys go through rehab with absolutely no bumps in the road. Some guys — actually most guys — have bumps along the way. You know he will put everything he has into this.” Opening day, originally scheduled for next... [More]

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Walker Buehler is looking at the bright side of his spring training situation."As opposed to other years at least I have one," the Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander said after pitching four innings against the Milwaukee Brewers on a rainy Wednesday night at Camelback Ranch. Buehler, who was brought along slowly last year in the Cactus League, made his third start and threw 62 pitches in four innings. He gave up three hits and one run, walked three and struck out four.Manager Dave Roberts said before the game that he hasn't been as sharp as usual and after he came out, Buehler agreed."I'm not as sharp as I want to be," Buehler said. "It's a step forward. Still trying to figure some stuff out. Getting closer to that."I was a little sporadic today. But I'm pleased I did get some punchouts."Buehler will line up as the Dodgers' No. 2 starter, following longtime ace Clayton Kershaw to the mound when the regular season begins in two weeks.(asterisk) Dodgers third baseman... Sun Mar 8 202016:30Inciarte feeling fine as part of crowded Braves outfield
NORTH PORT, Fla. (AP) — When Atlanta Braves hitters talk about their goals, they rarely speak about number of home runs, RBIs, steals or average.Instead, it's three words: "Just stay healthy."Ender Inciarte understands that so well after an injury-plagued 2019 season. The two-plus months of recovery and rehabilitation left him thinking, "I don't want to repeat that ever again."Inciarte is part of a full Braves outfield that includes one of the most talented young players in the game in Ronald Acuna Jr., free-agent acquisition Marcell Ozuna, productive Nick Markakis and veteran Adam Duvall. When he's feeling fine, Inciarte is one of baseball's best defensive players. From 2016-18, Inciarte was one of just four players in the majors to win a Gold Glove three straight years. The others were third baseman Nolan Arenado, pitcher Zack Greinke and outfielder Mookie Betts.Inciarte also proved to be a solid offensive player by averaging 22 steals and a .287 batting average in that span.Last season,... Thu Mar 5 202014:19Cleveland's Reyes still smashing baseballs in Cactus League
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Cleveland's Franmil Reyes strikes out quite a bit and isn't a particularly good defensive outfielder. But the Indians slugger is showing once again that he can smash baseballs a long, long way.The 6-foot-5, 275-pound Reyes has flashed prodigious power during his short big-league career and is doing it again this spring in the Cactus League. He's 9-for-18 through Wednesday's games with three homers and four doubles.Reyes is coming off a 37-homer season, splitting time between the Padres and Indians after getting traded midseason. The 24-year-old is trying to improve as an outfielder, but the move to the American League means he can provide value as a designated hitter, too.The Indians hope to improve on last year's 93-win season that left them just short of the playoffs. If Reyes can be an anchor in the middle of the lineup, it certainly would help the cause. Here are a few other players who are playing well in the Grapefruit and Cactus Leagues (through Wednesday's... FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — Boston Red Sox starter Chris Sale has soreness in his throwing elbow and has undergone an MRI, the team announced two days after the 30-year-old left-hander faced batters for the first time this spring. Team doctors reviewed the MRI results and sent them to Dr. James Andrews. “Obviously we're concerned about it,.” Roenicke said Tuesday.
