The fact that he'll be out for so long may force the Padres to make a move for another catcher, but for now, Wil Nieves will fill that role.

The deal will send Federowicz, along with outfielder Matt Kemp, to San Diego, in exchange for Yasmani Grandal, Joe Wieland, and a third player to be named. If he's able to cement a spot on the Major League roster, Federowicz will compete with incumbent Rene Rivera for playing time.

Federowicz is coming off yet another excellent season at Triple-A, but his .328 batting average and 14 homers over 78 games likely owes a huge debt of gratitude to the favorable parks of the PCL. His offensive production has never translated during multiple cups of coffee in the majors, and for that reason, he'll be little more than an insurance option behind A.J. Ellis and Drew Butera in September.

Meanwhile, Drew Butera still couldn't hit sand if he fell off a camel and A.J. Ellis isn't much better at .199/.343/.247. Still, don't expect Federowicz to be anything more than a September 1 call-up.
