Wed Sep 15 202108:08Gerrit Cole Strikes Out Seven In 15th Win
New York Yankees starting pitcher Gerrit Cole notched his 15th win of the season Tuesday against the Orioles. Cole allowed one run over five innings of work, surrendering four hits and a trio of walks while fanning seven batters. The right-hander didn't have his best control of the strike zone, as the three walks were the most he's issued since the start of July, though in typical ace fashion, he was good enough to earn the victory. The 31-year-old owns an impressive 2.75 ERA with 224 strikeouts in 163 2/3 innings pitched. Cole lines up to face the Indians in his next start. He struck out 11 over seven innings of one-run ball in his first matchup with Cleveland.

Thu Sep 9 202116:30Gerrit Cole Could Return Early Next Week
New York Yankees starting pitcher Gerrit Cole (hamstring) could return to the rotation early next week. Cole played catch in the outfield before Thursday's game against the Blue Jays, which reportedly went well, leading to the belief that the ace hurler will avoid a stint on the injured list. Manager Aaron Boone said that Cole could slot in Monday or Tuesday. The California native has pitched to a 14-7 record with a 2.78 ERA and a 217:34 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 158 2/3 innings. A quick return would be excellent news for Cole's fantasy managers, as he's been worth every bit of his lofty draft price this season.

New York Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole (hamstring) exited Tuesday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays early with hamstring tightness. He allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits and two walks while striking out two across 3 2/3 innings before exiting with the trainer. The severity of Cole's hamstring injury is unknown at this time, and he's considered day-to-day. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor the situation as the Yankees will provide an update after the game. Thu Sep 2 202110:50Gerrit Cole Dominates Angels With 15-Strikeout Performance
New York Yankees starting pitcher Gerrit Cole turned in a dominant performance just when his club needed one in Wednesday's win over the Angels. Cole pitched seven innings of one-run ball, surrendering four hits while striking out a whopping 15 batters against zero walks. He became the third Yankees pitcher to have a 15-strikeout, zero-walk game and the first in franchise history to record five performances with at least 12 punchouts in a single season. Cole generated an incredible 32 swinging strikes, 18 of them on his heater, which showed break and velocity slightly above his season averages. The ace right-hander is making a stronger case for the Cy Young award with each start, improving to 14-6 on the season with a 2.73 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, and a 215:32 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 155 innings pitched. Cole is lined up to face the Blue Jays next. He allowed two runs over eight innings in his last outing against them.

Sun Aug 29 202112:28Gerrit Cole Enters Stretch On Hot Streak
New York Yankees starting pitcher Gerrit Cole is on a roll heading into the final month of the season. Cole, who beat the Oakland Athletics on Friday going six shutout innings with nine strikeouts, has won three straight decisions after an adjustment period following the league-wide crackdown on sticky stuff. The 30-year-old right-hander has just one start scheduled in the coming week, against the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday, but is back to being a must-use in all fantasy formats. On the year he is 13-6 with a 2.80 ERA.

Sun Aug 15 202112:19Gerrit Cole, Jordan Montgomery Returning For Yankees
New York Yankees starting pitcher Gerrit Cole will be back on the mound Monday against the Los Angeles Angels, according to The Athletic, citing manager Aaron Boone. Luis Gil and Jordan Montgomery are the expected starters for Tuesday's doubleheader against Boston. Cole and Montgomery recently tested positive for Covid-19, though they have been able to throw and work out together. Their return after a relatively short absence is a big boost for the Yankees and fantasy managers, especially with Cole in the mix for the American League's Cy Young award.

Tue Aug 10 202119:37Gerrit Cole, Jordan Montgomery Close To Returning
New York Yankees starting pitchers Gerrit Cole and Jordan Montgomery are close to returning to the rotation. Both Cole and Montgomery tested positive for COVID-19, though they are expected to rejoin the team on the road this week, per manager Aaron Boone. The Yankee hurlers have been able to throw and work out together and are slated to toss bullpen sessions over the weekend, at which point the club will decide when they'll be able to rejoin the rotation. Cole and Montgomery rank 1-2 among qualified starters on the Yankee staff in innings pitched, strikeouts, and ERA, as they've been equally valuable to both the club and fantasy managers who roster them.

Mon Aug 2 202123:15Gerrit Cole Tests Positive For COVID-19
New York Yankees starting pitcher Gerrit Cole (COVID-19) tested positive for COVID-19 Monday and will not make his scheduled start Tuesday against the Seattle Mariners, according to manager Aaron Boone. Yankees starting pitcher Nestor Cortes will take the ball tomorrow instead of Cole. No word on how long Yankees ace will be on the shelf for and Cole has not been placed on the COVID-19 injured list as of yet. The 30-year-old is 10-6 on the season with a 3.11 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, 2.82 FIP, and a league-leading 176 strikeouts over 130 1/3 innings. With starting pitchers Luis Severino and Corey Kluber not expected back until late August, and Domingo German being placed on the injured list Sunday, the Yankees are running thin on pitching depth and might have to resort to a bullpen day or two until there's more information on Cole.

Fri Jul 30 202121:15Yankees get Angels lefty starter Heaney for 2 minor leaguers
MIAMI (AP) — The New York Yankees acquired Los Angeles Angels starter Andrew Heaney on Friday, adding a pitcher after making two big trades for sluggers. The Yankees got the 30-year-old lefty and cash for minor league right-handers Janson Junk and Elvis Peguero. New York began the day at 53-48, fourth in the AL wild-card race for two spots. As Friday's trade deadline approached, the Yankees got All-Star outfielder Joey Gallo from Texas and star first baseman Anthony Rizzo from the Chicago Cubs. Heaney was 6-7 with a 5.27 ERA in 18 starts for the Angels this year. He is 30-36 with a 4.57 ERA in eight seasons with Miami and Los Angeles — he posted his first big league win against the Yankees in 2015. Angels general manager Perry Minasian said one major reason for the move was the development of Reid Detmers, who will make his major-league debut on Saturday against Oakland. Detmers was the 10th overall pick in the 2020 draft, threw six shutout innings and struck out nine in his only start... [More]

Thu Jul 29 202122:44Not left out: Yankees get big lefty bats with Gallo, Rizzo
NEW YORK (AP) — Desperate for a powerful, left-handed bat to park balls in the short porch at Yankee Stadium, the New York Yankees got two of them. Hours after announcing their trade to acquire All-Star slugger Joey Gallo from Texas, the playoff-chasing Yankees worked out a deal for longtime Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo on Thursday. The swaps came on a day the Yankees lost at Tampa Bay 14-0, leaving them far behind Boston in the AL East and fourth in the chase for two wild-card spots. Team officials, including owner Hal Steinbrenner and general manager Brian Cashman, have been holding meetings in nearby Tampa, Florida. “Part of the reason I’m here is because Hal always goes for it, and so does Brian,” Yankees ace Gerrit Cole said after the lopsided loss. “Continue to push chips in. I trust that they’re going to do what’s best for the organization, what’s best to win. I trust they’re going to try and make us better one way or another, and they did.” The Yankees made the moves... Thu Jul 29 202118:45Left turn: Boone says Yankees 'a lot better' with Gallo
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — The Yankees have answered questions about how they would proceed heading into Friday's trade deadline. They are big-time buyers. All-Star slugger Joey Gallo's trade to New York from the Texas Rangers was completed Thursday, giving the heavily right-handed Yankees a much-needed powerful lefty bat. New York acquired Gallo and left-hander Joely Rodriguez from the Rangers for minor league right-hander Glenn Otto and infielders Ezequiel Duran, Trevor Hauver and Josh Smith. The Yankees will receive $2,722,865 from the Rangers plus another $500,000 in January that is conditioned on Rodriguez’ 2022 option buyout being paid. With switch-hitting center fielder Aaron Hicks hurt, second baseman Rougned Odor and outfielder Brett Gardner have been the only left-handed hitters to see substantial playing time. “Sign me up for the guy that’s on base almost 40% of the time and has power and provides the kind of potential balance for our lineup,” Boone said before New York lost... Thu Jul 29 202118:16Gerrit Cole Surrenders Seven Earned Runs, Fans 10 Batters In Loss
New York Yankees starting pitcher Gerrit Cole took the loss in a 14-0 rout at the hands of the Rays. Cole ran into trouble in the first inning, allowing four earned runs before getting one out, the first time such an instance has occurred in his career. He later retired nine batters in a row. Cole's final line reflects the highs and lows he experienced in this outing- a season-high seven earned runs allowed but 10 strikeouts and an eye-popping 23 whiffs in 5 1/3 innings of work. Cole's strikeout rate has jumped from 25.4 percent in June to 37.2 percent in July, meaning he's figured out a different way to fool hitters despite lower spin rates. While these poor outings are frustrating, it's encouraging that the strikeouts are back, which should lead to an ace-like performance more often than not moving forward.
