MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — The Memphis Grizzlies have sent forward Jarell Martin and cash considerations to the Orlando Magic in exchange for center Dakari Johnson and the draft rights to Tyler Harvey.Martin, 24, played three seasons with the Grizzlies and averaged 6.2 points, 4.0 rebounds and 18.3 minutes in 142 games. The Grizzlies took the 6-foot-10 forward from LSU with the 25th overall pick in the 2015 draft.Orlando is trading Johnson just three days after acquiring him from the Oklahoma City Thunder.Johnson, 22, played 31 games for the Thunder this past season. The 7-footer averaged 1.8 points, 1.1 rebounds and 5.2 minutes.The Magic selected Harvey with the 51st overall pick in the 2015 draft. Bickerstaff believes he can make the franchise competitive immediately with a quick recovery from a 60-loss season.That's what his boss expects as well."We're going into it with an optimistic view and we're planning on success," Bickerstaff said Wednesday, one day after having the interim tag removed from his title . "We're planning on a playoff run. There's no doubt about it."The Grizzlies announced Tuesday that Bickerstaff would remain their head coach after he worked the last 63 games of Memphis' 2017-18 season on an interim basis. Bickerstaff began the 2017-18 season as an associate head coach on the staff of David Fizdale, who was fired in late November .Memphis went 15-48 under Bickerstaff and finished the season 22-60 , posting the second-worst record in the NBA and ending a string of seven straight playoff appearances. MIAMI (AP) — Memphis Grizzlies guard Tyreke Evans will undergo a precautionary MRI Sunday on injured right ribs that forced him to miss their game at Miami.Coach J.B. Bickerstaff said he doesn't anticipate a long absence for Evans, who is averaging a team-high 19.4 points per game.Evans left Friday's game against Cleveland in the fourth quarter because of the injury. The Memphis Grizzlies exercised the third-year contract option on forward Jarell Martin for the 2017-18 season.The 6-foot-10, 239-pound Martin competed in 27 regular-season games (no starts) during his rookie season in 2015-16, averaging 5.7 points and 3.2 rebounds in 14.1 minutes.Martin, 22, was selected by the Grizzlies in the first round (25th overall) of the 2015 draft. He did not appear in the Grizzlies' opening-night victory on Wednesday night against the Minnesota Timberwolves.Martin also appeared in 10 games (six starts) last season with the Grizzlies' NBA Development League affiliate, the Iowa Energy, and averaged 15.0 points and 6.0 rebounds in 28.9 minutes.Martin played two seasons at Louisiana State University (2013-15), averaging 13.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 65 games (57 starts). |
