Jason Maxiell will not play Sunday vs. Chicago due to an eye injury.

The Pistons don't really need him now that Andre Drummond is back and starting. The absence of Maxiell makes Drummond a must-play option today.

Jason Maxiell returned to action on Wednesday from an ankle injury and had eight points and 14 rebounds in 32 minutes.

Maxiell has been hit or miss all season, and mostly a miss. He's just as likely to have three points and three boards as he is to have a big line, so we'd think about looking elsewhere for help off your waiver wire except in the deepest of leagues.

He hasn't done much in his previous three games with averages of 5.0 points and 5.0 boards. Maxiell won't be worth owning in most leagues while the Pistons are healthy up front.

Riding Maxiell was fun when he was hot, but it appears the party is over.

Owners that have rode Maxiell the past two weeks most likely felt like they've been playing with house money and it was only a matter of time before he laid an egg. He did play 38 minutes on Friday, so those that picked him up might not want to abandon him unless it's for a hot free agent.

It's worth noting that his free throw attempts have gone up lately and he's a career 56.4 percent shooter from the charity stripe. He was solid on Friday, as he shot 7-of-8 from the line and he is worth a look in most leagues.

Maxiell was 1-of-10 for two points on Monday, but added 11 rebounds and two more blocks in that one. He's racked up 24 blocks in his last nine games and deserves a close look in all leagues while he's this hot.

In his six December games, Maxiell has averaged over two blocks per game while averaging eight points and eight boards. However, his upside is capped a bit since coach Lawrence Frank said that the training wheels will come off of Andre Drummond in the future. Maxiell does have some value in deeper leagues, though.

Maxiell is having a block party for the Pistons and now has 13 blocks in his last three games. He is also logging 30.4 minutes in his last five games, which puts him in the discussion for ownership in some standard formats.

This was by far his biggest line of the year and the 37 minutes were a season high. Despite the big game, he is playing just 27 minutes per game and is only worth a look in most leagues.

Many fans and fantasy owners want to see more of Andre Drummond, but Maxiell is averaging 9.8 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.4 blocks in a starting role. In a contract season, it's not a surprise Maxiell may be playing with a little extra motivation. "The grind he plays with, that's part of his job description, it inspires the whole group," Lawrence Frank said. Owners in desperate need of a big man could give Max a look in deeper formats.

Maxiell made 5-of-10 FGs and 5-of-6 FTs in just under 30 minutes, and he's settling into a productive groove as the starting PF. And as long as Max and Greg Monroe are thriving, Andre Drummond's short-term outlook will remain dim.

Max threw down a vicious and-1 dunk to bring the game within a point late, and has been playing very well lately with very little acclaim. He will eventually give way to Andre Drummond, but for now he should be owned in most 14-16 team formats.

Maxiell is playing well, and in particular his screen work has distinguished himself from the rookie Andre Drummond, leading to more minutes. If you're in a 20-team league, give him a look.

We'd like to see rookie Andre Drummond get Maxiell's job, but he played 13 minutes for two points, two rebounds and a block. As long as Maxiell is starting, he's worth a look in deeper leagues, while Drummond is going to need a lot more minutes than he had tonight to offer any value.

Jason Maxiell started Wednesday's preseason game over Jonas Jerebko, who is also seeing time at small forward for the Pistons.

Maxiell had just seven points and three boards in 22 minutes, while Jerebko hit 5-of-7 shots for 10 points and four boards off the bench. Maxiell has limited upside as a starter after averaging seven points, six boards and a block in 42 starts last season, while Jerebko might be tough to own in fantasy leagues if he's coming off the bench. For now, it looks like it may be Maxiell's job to lose, while Charlie Villanueva is also going to steal some power forward minutes in Detroit.
