Nelson recorded 12 points (4-7 FG, 1-3 3Pt, 3-3 FT) and dropped two dimes in Tuesday's preseason win over the Mavericks.
As anticipated, the Nuggets announced earlier in the week that Emmanuel Mudiay would serve as the team's starting point guard, leaving Nelson to serve in a backup role this season while functioning as a veteran mentor for the rookie. Nelson will likely make a push for around 20 minutes a night early in the season, but if Mudiay thrives to the extent the Nuggets believe he can, Nelson figures to see his role diminish as the weeks and months pass.
Mon Jul 13 201512:51Nelson has agreed to three-year
Nelson has agreed to a three-year, $13.5 million contract with the Nuggets, ESPN reports.
Nelson became a free agent after declining a $2.9 million player option heading into this offseason, so the reported value of his new contract with the Nuggets gives the 33-year-old a decent pay raise as his career winds down. After joining Denver mid-way through last season, Nelson went on to average 9.6 points, 3.7 assists and 1.4 three-pointers in 20.6 minutes per game. With Nelson back in the fold, as well as Denver's first-round selection of point guard Emmanuel Mudiay, it wouldn't be surprising if Ty Lawson is shopped on the trade market this summer. Given that deep pecking order, the veteran Nelson projects as either the Nuggets' second or third point guard this upcoming season.
Fri Jun 26 201516:26Nelson has opted out of final year of contract with Nuggets
Nelson has opted out of the final year of his contract with the Nuggets, thus becoming an unrestricted free agent, The Denver Post reports.
Nelson played for the Nuggets, Celtics and Mavericks last season, when his contract was shopped around the league in trade talks. However, now that the Nuggets have spent their first round pick on fellow point guard Emmanuel Mudiay and Nelson has declined his $2.9 million player option for next season, the 33-year-old will hit the open market in search of another pay day from a team in need of veteran depth in their backcourt.

Nelson notched averages of 9.6 points (45% FG, 35% 3Pt, 58% FT), 1.9 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 0.7 steals, and 0.1 blocks in 21 minutes per game during 34 games with the Nuggets in 2014-15.
Before being traded to the Nuggets following a brief six-game stint with the Celtics, Nelson started 23 games in 2014-15 with the Mavericks, averaging 7.3 points (37% FG, 37% 3Pt, 88% FT), 2.7 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 0.7 steals, and 0.1 blocks in 25 mpg. The 33-year-old guard reportedly plans to decline his $2.9 million player option for 2015-16 to become an unrestricted free agent. However, regardless of where he winds up, he's unlikely to regain the prominent role we became accustomed to seeing him enjoy with the Magic during his prime.

Nelson (hip) said he will wait to decide whether or not to opt into his contract for next season, the Denver Post reports. "Whatever I decide, I'll definitely discuss with that team what my role would be," said Nelson. "I feel like I'm definitely more than a 15 or 18-minute guy, for sure."
Nelson has a $2.8 million player option for next season, which he is yet to decide whether or not he'll exercise. The veteran will weigh several factors, including playing time and head coach. Nelson voiced his support for interim head coach Melvin Hunt, saying he did a "great job of sticking with us when things got tough." However, the Nuggets have not decided whether Hunt will be back next season, so it looks as though Nelson will wait on that decision to before making his own.
Wed Apr 15 201515:14Nelson (hip) will sit out season finale Wednesday
Nelson (hip) will sit out the season finale Wednesday, Chris Dempsey of the Denver Post reports.
Nelson, who has missed the last four games, will not return for the final game of the season with the Nuggets well out of playoff contention. Expect him to recovery fully this offseason as he faces the decision of whether or not to pick up his $2.9 million player option for 2015-16.
