Tue Apr 2 201902:09Yanks beat Tigers, lose Stanton and Andujar to injuries
NEW YORK (AP) — Domingo German overcame control problems on a chilly night to win for the first time since last June, Gary Sanchez and Brett Gardner homered and the banged-up New York Yankees beat the punchless Detroit Tigers 3-1 Monday.Aaron Judge made a sprawling, backhand catch on Niko Goodrum's hard-hit liner after Adam Ottavino walked the first two batters in the eighth inning, a drive that would have tied the score if it had gotten by the right fielder.New York lost two more regulars to the 10-day injured list before the game after they got hurt a day earlier, outfielder Giancarlo Stanton with a strained left biceps and third baseman Miguel Andujar with a small labrum tear in his right shoulder.Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Andujar, runner-up for AL Rookie of the Year last season, will be treated conservatively with a rehab program and there is some optimism he will respond well. But if not, he could need season-surgery.They joined a group of sidelined Yankees that includes pitchers... [More]
Wed Mar 27 201905:17Indians' Jose Ramirez expected in opening day lineup
Jose Ramirez is expected to be in the Cleveland Indians' opening day lineup Thursday, four days after fouling a pitch off the area below his left knee.Manager Terry Francona said Tuesday that Ramirez should be ready to go for the opener at Minnesota. The All-Star third baseman worked out Monday and Tuesday in Arizona, testing his bruised left knee while Cleveland finished its exhibition schedule with games against the Rangers in Texas. Ramirez will join the team for a workout Wednesday in Minnesota.Ramirez left the field on a cart Sunday in an alarming scene for the Indians, who will already be without star shortstop Francisco Lindor and second baseman Jason Kipnis. Both players are working back from right calf strains.Ramirez had 39 home runs and 105 RBIs last season, finishing third in AL MVP voting for the second straight year.Cleveland lost to Texas 5-4 on Tuesday in its final spring training game. Mike Clevinger allowed four runs (two earned) in three innings. He walked two, struck... [More]
Wed Mar 27 201900:19A's plan to platoon Hundley, Phegley at catcher
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — For the third time in five years, Nick Hundley is starting over. This time, the 35-year-old is part of a catching platoon in Oakland where he'll be splitting time with Josh Phegley. It's not unlike other situations Hundley has been through in his career. He spent the past two seasons behind Buster Posey in San Francisco, was a backup in Colorado and Baltimore prior to that, and split time as a starter over seven years in San Diego. With so much activity on his resume, Hundley has become accustomed to learning quickly, something that's come in handy as he tries to find a comfort zone with the Athletics."For a guy like him who's been different places and a veteran guy, it's easier for him to figure it out on the fly," manager Bob Melvin said prior to Tuesday's exhibition game in San Francisco. "Even though it's been a shortened spring, a guy like him figures it out pretty quickly. I'm not too worried about him learning our staff. He's caught everybody and understands the... [More]
Tue Mar 26 201902:41Frankie Montas parlays new pitch into spot in A's rotation
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Oakland Athletics manager Bob Melvin took another step toward finalizing his pitching rotation Monday, announcing right-hander Frankie Montas will be the team's fourth starter. The 26-year-old Montas has had varied success during parts of two seasons with the A's but was dominant this spring after adding a splitter to complement a 97 mph fastball and slider. The new pitch produced immediate results as Montas went 2-0 with a 0.56 ERA in five games with 16 strikeouts and five walks over 16 innings. He joins an A's rotation that includes Mike Fiers, Marco Estrada and Brett Anderson."Deservedly so," Melvin said. "He's had a terrific spring, pitched well whether he was starting a game, whether he was piggy-backing with somebody, and continued pitching the same the entire spring — with some pressure on him knowing that he had to win a job. Proud of him. He deserves to be in the rotation."Melvin didn't use a projected starter in Oakland's 5-4 exhibition win over San Francisco,... [More]

RHP Aaron Brooks was claimed off waivers from the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday. He was sent to Triple-A Colorado Springs. The 27-year-old has had a successful minor league career, going 28-18 with a 4.72 ERA in four Triple-A seasons. But that success has not translated to the majors, where he's gone 3-5 with an 8.38 ERA in two seasons for the Kansas City Royals and Oakland Athletics.

RHP Aaron Brooks was acquired by the Cubs from the A's on Thursday in exchange for OF Chris Coghlan. Brooks, 25, split last season between Kansas City and Oakland, going a combined 3-4 with a 6.67 ERA in 13 games (nine starts).

Brooks (3-4) was great on Friday, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks across seven innings in a win over the Mariners. He struck out just one.
The performance raised his average to 6.67, so it's been a rough season for Brooks to say the least. Peripherals would indicate that the righty has been severely unlucky, as his xFIP is at just 4.19 with a .366 BABIP. Luckily for him, GM Billy Beane looks at these stats more than the standard ERA and WHIP and that should prove to be beneficial for his roster spot next season.

Brooks pitched well on Sunday against the Astros, allowing three earned runs over seven innings while striking out five.
The start ended a three-run run for Brooks where he has allowed five or more runs in all three starts. Brooks has been in the rotation due to the myriad of injuries to the A's starters, but he has not performed well with an ERA over seven on the season. He will next take the mound either Friday or Saturday agaisnt the Giants.

Brooks improved to 2-3 despite allowing six runs on 10 hits and two walks over six innings Tuesday against the White Sox. He struck out six.
Luckily for Brooks, the Athletics put up 16 runs in the first four innings on Jeff Samardzija and the White Sox bullpen. Brooks gave up two home runs and has now served up six in just seven starts this year (1.4 HR/9). That's particularly bad news given Oakland's pitcher friendly effects, and Brooks will need to show he can keep the ball in the yard before he can lay claim to a long-term starting spot.

Brooks (1-3) was ineffective Wednesday, giving up five earned runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out two over four innings in an 11-5 loss to the Astros.
Acquired from the Royals at the trade deadline, Brooks has had a difficult start to his Athletics career. Recalled from Triple-A Nashville in late August, Brooks has now allowed five earned runs or more in two consecutive starts. Having pitched to a 1.56 WHIP and 6.89 K/9 in 32 major league innings, Brooks is making it difficult for Oakland to justify keeping him in the rotation.

Brooks will be called up to start Saturday's game against the Diamondbacks, CSN California's Joe Stiglich reports.
Brooks, 25, has a 2.25 ERA in two starts with Oakland's Triple-A affiliate but he has a 6.19 ERA in 16 innings with the big league club this season. He was originally scheduled to come up Monday, but Felix Doubront (foot) was pushed back a couple days, meaning Brooks will join the rotation sooner than expected. Brooks is not assured of a spot the rest of the way, as Kendall Graveman (oblique) could return and the A's also have other options in the minor leagues.
