BOSTON (AP) — Red Sox ace Chris Sale and manager Alex Cora both made early exits in Boston's 7-2 loss to Houston in Game 1 of AL Championship Series on Saturday night.Sale lasted just four innings, giving up two runs, one hit, four walks and a hit batter.Cora wasn't far behind the lanky left-hander going back to the clubhouse. The rookie manager was ejected in the bottom of the fifth inning with the game tied 2-2 after arguing a called third strike on Andrew Benintendi that ended Boston's first rally of the game."You can't argue balls and strikes, and I did," Cora said. "It's kind of like embarrassing that it happens in the playoffs. That wasn't cool watching the game in the clubhouse. ... But sometimes you got to do what you got to do, and you've got to defend your players."Sale opened the game with an eight-pitch walk to George Springer and struggled through the first three innings with subpar stuff and location."I just went out there and lost it for a little bit," Sale said.Houston took... BOSTON (AP) — Red Sox manager Alex Cora has been ejected from Game 1 of the AL Championship Series against the Houston Astros for arguing a called third strike in the fifth inning that ended Boston's first rally of the game. There were two out, two on and two runs already in when Justin Verlander threw a 98 mph fastball to Andrew Benintendi near the outside corner Saturday for strike three. Benintendi slammed his helmet and bat down and jawed with plate umpire James Hoye before Red Sox coaches ran in to get between them.Cora continued to yell from the dugout and was tossed by Hoye. The first-year Red Sox manager, who had been ejected once before this season, handed the lineup card to Ron Roenicke and walked down the tunnel.___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/tag/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports |

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Told he had the day off after pitching three shutout innings in the NL Championship Series opener, hard-throwing Milwaukee left-hander Josh Hader wasn't expecting a call to the bullpen. After watching Brewers relievers blow a late three-run lead in Game 2, Hader would have embraced back-to-back outings, high pitch count and all."Adrenaline can do a lot things," he said when asked if he could have pitched. The best-of-seven series is tied at a game apiece after the Dodgers dented the rest of the Brewers' hard-throwing relievers in the late innings for a second straight day and won 4-3 on Saturday. While Wade Miley pitched 5 2/3 shutout innings and became Milwaukee's first pitcher to get an out in the sixth inning in the postseason, the Dodgers rallied from a three-run, seventh-inning deficit for the win.Miley had thrown 74 pitches when he was removed."Look you're either too early or too late," manager Craig Counsell said. MILWAUKEE (AP) — Injured Brewers pitcher Brent Suter says he's no longer allowed in the dugout during the NL Championship Series. He was with his teammates for Game 1 against the Los Angeles Dodgers.Suter tweeted about the situation before Game 2 on Saturday and then deleted his post. A spokesman for Major League Baseball says players who are not on the 40-man roster are not allowed in the dugout during playoff games.Suter tweeted an apology and asked for MLB to let him back in. The gregarious left-hander promised "to behave and be only mildly weird!" before the post was taken down. The 29-year-old Suter went 8-7 with a 4.44 ERA in 20 games this year before he was sidelined by a torn ligament in his left elbow. Cody Bellinger will begin Saturday's game on the bench, but Roberts said he will enter at some point.Bellinger went 0 for 4 in the series opener. The young slugger is 0 for 15 in the playoffs."There is a frustration where he wants to see results, and all players do," Roberts said. "But I encourage him, even today, that where he's at mechanically, I encourage him mentally to stay there in a positive way, because he's going to get some big hits for us."Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell made two changes, inserting Travis Shaw at second base and Erik Kratz at catcher. MILWAUKEE (AP) — Reliever Xavier Cedeno is joining the Milwaukee Brewers' 25-man roster for the NL Championship Series, giving the strong bullpen another left-handed arm against the Dodgers' power-packed lineup. The Brewers made room for Cedeno by dropping slick-fielding outfielder Keon Broxton off the NLCS roster that was set before Game 1.Cedeno had a 1.13 ERA in eight innings over 15 games since being acquired Aug. 31 in a deal with the Chicago White Sox.Left-handed hitting Max Muncy has a team-high 35 homers for the Dodgers. Two more left-handers, Cody Bellinger and Joc Pederson, are next with 25 each. The addition of Cedeno was the only change to the Brewers' roster from the Division Series. Milwaukee will have 12 pitchers, one more than it had in the NLCS, and 13 positions players. The Dodgers are sticking with 12 pitchers and 13 positions players, but made one change from the Division Series. They switched left-handers for the NLCS, with Julio Urias taking Scott Alexander's roster spot. The hard-throwing Urias had no record and didn't allow a run in three games this season. He returned to the big leagues in mid-September after missing more than a year following surgery on his left shoulder.Alexander was 2-1 with a 3.68 ERA and three saves this season.
