"I'm going to be OK. I'm going to be back out on the field sooner than later."Kiermaier was hurt diving headfirst into first base on an infield single in the eighth inning of the Rays' 2-1, 11-inning loss to the Chicago White Sox on Saturday night."I was just trying to make something happen right there," he said. "Yes, I regret sliding into first base. I didn't think that was going to happen, but that's what happens when you do things on the fly and don't have a thought process."Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash said Kiermaier will be evaluated after getting three days of... CLEVELAND (AP) — Corey Kluber threw 30 pitches in a bullpen session as the Cleveland right-hander continues his comeback from a broken forearm.Kluber threw off the mound for the second time Sunday since being struck on the right arm by a line drive on May 1 against Miami.Manager Terry Francona said the two-time AL Cy Young Award winner is scheduled to throw off the mound again Wednesday.Kluber has thrown breaking pitches off flat ground, but has gone with only fastballs in the bullpen. Francona said Kluber will begin throwing breaking pitches off the mound in upcoming sessions. The Indians have climbed back in the AL Central race without Kluber and right-hander Carlos Carrasco, who was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia in June.Carrasco has been throwing in the bullpen, but told reporters earlier this month he doesn't know if he'll pitch again this season.___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Left-hander Drew Smyly finalized his contract with Philadelphia and was set to start against Pittsburgh on Sunday in his Phillies debut. The 30-year-old was 1-5 with an 8.42 ERA in nine starts and four relief appearances this year for Texas, which released him on June 25.Smyly signed a minor league contract with Milwaukee on July 1, went 1-0 with a 4.97 ERA in three starts for Triple-A San Antonio, then on Thursday exercised his right to be released. He agreed to the deal with the Phillies on Friday, pending a successful physical.Philadelphia becomes responsible for paying Smyly $211,855, a prorated share of the $555,000 major league minimum. That will be offset against the $7 million salary he was owed this year by the Rangers, who got him from the Chicago Cubs. Smyly didn't pitch in the majors the past two seasons because of Tommy John surgery. Texas signed him to a $10 million, two-year deal.Phillies right-hander Nick Pivetta was moved to the bullpen to make room for Smyly, who entered Sunday 32-32 with a 4.19 ERA in 94 starts and 75 relief appearances in six major league seasons that also included time with Detroit (2012-14) and Tampa Bay (2014-16).Right-hander Fernando Salas was designated for assignment to open a roster spot.__More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

NEW YORK (AP) — When first hit by a pitch from Colorado's Chad Bettis, Yankees slugger Luke Voit was scared. He remembered when Giancarlo Stanton's jaw was broken by Milwaukee's Mike Fiers five years ago."I thought broken jaw. My teeth were going to be all scattered everywhere," Voit said Sunday. "I grabbed my face. So I was like, 'Oh, oh.' ... But then, it wasn't as bad as I thought. Just a scary thing."Voit was back in the New York Yankees' lineup at first base for Sunday's series finale against Colorado. His jaw was "super sore" when he awoke, but after icing there was only a little swelling. He said it felt as if he had been punched, and there was a slight cut on his chin. Concussion tests were negative.Part of the force of the 91 mph pitch was absorbed when the ball grazed Voit's shoulder. He also was able to turn his face slightly."I dodged a bullet, got lucky," said Voit, who planned to try a protective chin strap on his helmet before the game.Left fielder Brett Gardner was scratched... BALTIMORE (AP) — Outfielder Keon Broxton has been designated for assignment by the Baltimore Orioles, who grew weary of waiting for him to hit.Broxton was obtained from the New York Mets on May 22 for $500,000 in 2019-20 international signing bonus pool allotment. He homered on the first pitch he saw as an Oriole but ended up batting only .204 with four homers and nine RBIs in 37 games.Manager Brandon Hyde said: "He swung the bat good in Colorado when he first got to us, but just kind of had a tough time getting going. It just wasn't happening offensively."In need of a reliever to fill out a depleted bullpen on Sunday, Baltimore called up Brandon Kline and removed Broxton from the 25-man roster.Anthony Santander and Stevie Wilkerson are expected to get the majority of playing time in center for the rebuilding Orioles, who started the day with a 30-67 record.Broxton played his position well and stole four bases in five attempts with Baltimore. But his combined batting average this season with New York and the Orioles is .184.Hyde said: "I hate to see Keon go. He's such a weapon defensively and on the bases. I'm sure he'll get picked up by somebody."___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

PITTSBURGH (AP) — John Candelaria can't quite pinpoint when the 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates adopted "We Are Family" by Sister Sledge as the club's de facto theme song on the way to a World Series title.Ultimately, the timing doesn't really matter. What matters is that every word rang true. The proof came on those off days on the road during that memorable summer and fall, when Candelaria and his teammates would rent a hotel suite, open up a few pops — "or whatever" as the pitcher put it with a smile — and open the floor for discussion."If there was anything on anyone's mind, right then and there in that room, that's where it stayed," Candelaria said Saturday while joining more than a dozen members of the 1979 team for a 40th anniversary celebration at PNC Park. "And we were good about that."Candelaria — who won 14 games for the Pirates in 1979 and earned the victory in Game 6 of the World Series against Baltimore as Pittsburgh became the first team to rally from a 3-1 deficit in a best-of-seven...
