LHP Matt Grace was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse on Sunday after he was sent down on Friday. Grace has a 6.23 ERA in three games this year with Washington after giving up a run in 1 1/3 innings of the nightcap Sunday against Philadelphia.

LHP Matt Grace was sent to Triple-A Syracuse on Friday along with RHP A.J. Cole. The Nationals had to make room on the roster as RHP relievers Koda Glover and Shawn Kelley came off the disabled list. Grace has a 6.00 ERA in two games this year with Washington.

Grace, 28, has not allowed a home run in 21 1/3 innings in the majors and has surrendered just 26 homers in 552 1/3 innings in the minors. "He's a left-handed pitcher, who generally throws breaking balls down," Baker said, "but this club is an up-swinging club. You kind of pitch this club up more than you would other teams, even though that seems contrary to this ballpark."

He has a 2.40 ERA but just 31 strikeouts in 48.2 innings at Triple-A this season. Look for him to pitch in low-leverage spots.

Grace was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse on Monday.

Grace was touched up on Sunday, allowing four earned runs without recording an out, which caused his ERA to balloon to 5.25 from 2.25. With him likely unavailable Monday, the Nationals decided to send him down and call up Felipe Rivero to add a fresh arm to the roster. Grace figures to be an option next time the Nationals need to bring up a reliever from the minors.

Grace failed to retire any of the five batters he faced Sunday, allowing four runs on three hits and two walks.

Grace had the worst among a bad bunch of relief outings for the Nats over the weekend. They blew a three-run lead Saturday and gave up six runs in the deciding seventh inning. Grace saw his ERA skyrocket from 2.25 to 5.25 with the outing.

Grace picked up the win Tuesday, walking one and striking out two in a scoreless 10th inning.

His 2.79 ERA in 9.2 innings since being called up looks good, but it comes along with a 1.76 WHIP and 8:4 K:BB ratio. Grace is likely competing with Sammy Solis for the right to stick around in the Nats' bullpen when Casey Janssen (shoulder) comes off the DL, and Tuesday's strong outing didn't hurt his case.

Grace was called up from Triple-A Syracuse prior to Wednesday's game and made his major league debut, walking one in a scoreless seventh inning.

He took Felipe Rivero's spot in the bullpen after Rivero was placed on the DL with a gastrointestinal issue. Grace wasn't off to a great start at Triple-A, posting a 3.52 ERA and 6:4 K:BB ratio in 7.2 innings, and he'll pitch in a low-leverage role for the Nats.

Grace was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse on Thursday.

Grace made a strong impression on the Nats' coaching staff in the initial weeks of spring training and went on to hurl 5.2 scoreless innings in Grapefruit League play. He was never realistically in the running for a bullpen spot, but his strong showing an impressive numbers at Triple-A last year (1.30 ERA, 0.98 WHIP) will likely put him on the short list of in-season replacement candidates.

Grace has made a good early impression on the Nationals' coaching staff, the Washington Post reports.

The left-hander is a long shot to win a bullpen role this spring after posting a dynamite 1.17 ERA in 77 innings between Double-A and Triple-A, but if he does come north with the Nats it would only be as a LOOGY. More likely, Grace returns to Triple-A to hone his craft.
