LHP CC Sabathia was injured a week ago in Anaheim and manager Joe Girardi said he is progressing decently. Sabathia is beginning his recovery from the injury by playing catch. The Yankees did not say what the next step is for Sabathia, who will likely miss at least a month.

LHP CC Sabathia, on the DL with a left hamstring strain, missed his first start on Sunday and expects to miss one more. He is not sure when he'll return but says the hamstring is improving.

New York Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia was diagnosed with a Grade 2 strained left hamstring on Wednesday.Sabathia was injured on his penultimate pitch of the fourth inning of Tuesday's loss to the Los Angeles Angels. He exited the game after finishing the inning and underwent an MRI before Wednesday's game.Manager Joe Girardi did not have any official information when he met reporters roughly two hours before first pitch on Wednesday. The Yankees made the announcement about 20 minutes before the game began.The Yankees did not officially place Sabathia on the disabled list since his next scheduled start would not have been until Sunday in Oakland. There is not an official timetable for Sabathia's return but a Grade 2 strain might take four to eight weeks to recover from.It also is the same injury Sabathia suffered in the final week of the 2013 season.Sabathia is 7-2 with 3.42 ERA in 13 starts this season. In his last six starts, Sabathia posted a 0.99 ERA.Sabathia missed a few starts the previous two years with a strained left groin and right knee inflammation. In 2014, he missed the final four-plus months after undergoing right knee surgery.Since joining the Yankees as a free agent following the 2008 season, Sabathia is 113-70 with a 3.74 ERA in 241 starts. His 230 wins are second among active pitchers, only behind former Cleveland Indians teammate Bartolo Colon.

Sabathia, who had won five straight starts going into the game, gave up one unearned run on three hits and one walk. After the game, Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Sabathia likely will be placed on the disabled list, pending an MRI exam Wednesday. "Yeah, it sucks," Sabathia said. "You want to be out there with the guys, you feel bad. It's a tough situation. It felt like it just grabbed at first. I don't think I heard a pop or anything like that, but when I went to throw the next pitch, I couldn't. It's sore, but hopefully when I wake up tomorrow it will feel a lot better."

LHP CC Sabathia will start Tuesday against the Angels. He is among the hottest pitchers in the majors, going 5-0 with a 1.11 ERA over his last five starts, thanks to improved health and better command of his cutter. Sabbathia is 9-9 with a 4.03 ERA in 20 career starts against the Angels.

LHP CC Sabathia won his fifth straight start Wednesday when he allowed five hits and retired the last 12 hitters in a sparkling eight-inning performance. It is the first time Sabathia won a fifth straight start since April 17-May 10, 2012. He picked up his 230th career win, to move into sole possession of 62nd place on the all-time list. LHP CC Sabathia struck out seven in the 12-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays Thursday night to move into fourth place on the all-time strikeouts list for left-handers. Sabathia finished the game with 2,779 career strikeouts to pass LHP Frank Tanana (2,773). It was his first start this season without allowing a walk.

LHP C.C. Sabathia gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits in five-plus innings to earn the win and improve to 4-2 this season while dropping his ERA to 4.62. He retired 12 straight batters during one stretch. "I just think my stuff was a little bit crisper today," Sabathia said. "Sanchez did a great job behind the plate again. We got two-strike counts, and even though they fouled a lot of pitches and ran my pitch count up a little, we were able to finish when we needed to."

LHP CC Sabathia has won all five of his starts as a Yankee against the Royals. Overall, he is 20-11 with a 3.11 ERA in 38 career starts versus Kanas City. He is 13-5 with a 3.42 ERA in 21 career starts at Kauffman Stadium, matching the most wins by a visitor at The K. "The cutter was a lot better today," Sabathia said after 6 2/3 scoreless innings and throwing only 85 pitches. "And the guys played great defense behind me. We figured out by the second inning they were coming out hacking. We just had to make some pitches on the edges and get some quick outs."

CC Sabathia allowed five runs in Tuesday's 5-3 loss at Cincinnati, all in the second inning when the Reds pounded out six singles while sending 10 batters to the plate. But, Sabathia settled down after that. "Fortunately, we took advantage of those opportunities in the second to plate all those runs," said Reds manager Bryan Price. "Sabathia got really good after that inning, throwing a good fastball inside, breaking ball, changeup away. He kept us off balance." Sabathia retired nine straight following the rough second to keep the Yankees in the game. "That's baseball, it's up to me to make a pitch in that (second) inning," Sabathia said. "My cutter got better as the game went on. In the second inning for whatever reason, it was just sneaking back over the plate. I felt good there with it later in the game. My changeup kept me in it."

LHP CC Sabathia will pitch Wednesday's series finale against the Blue Jays but did not spend Tuesday discussing his next start. Instead he spoke about the incident with some Boston fans yelling racial slurs at Baltimore CF Adam Jones on Monday. Sabathia said Boston is the only place he has heard such comments, though he has not heard those remarks from fans since joining the Yankees as a free agent in 2009. "It pisses you off and it's sad that you have to deal with that in this day and age. "But it is what it is, and like I said, we all know and get ready for it, I guess."

LHP CC Sabathia, 2-1 with a 2.70 ERA in four starts so far this season, faces the Orioles Friday night. He lost his last start, at Pittsburgh, working five innings and allowing four runs. He is 19-10 with a 3.30 ERA in 39 career starts against the Orioles, earning a no-decision in Baltimore April 9, when he allowed six hits and two earned runs in six innings.

LHP C.C. Sabathia went 0 for 2 at the plate. He's now on an 0-for-23 streak since May 23, 2010, but has maintained a career .214 batting average. Sabathia will likely get another chance with the bat when the Yankees play five straight games in National League parks from May 5 to 11 in Chicago and Cincinnati.

LHP CC Sabathia starts the series opener in Pittsburgh on Friday. Sabathia is 2-0 with a 1.47 ERA in his first three starts. He took a shutout into the eighth inning and allowed one run and three hits in 7 1/3 innings Saturday against the St. Louis Cardinals. Sabathia's ERA through his first three starts is the lowest since the 2011 season. Sabathia is 4-0 with a 1.23 ERA in six career starts against the Pirates, though Friday is the first time he will oppose them with the Yankees.

LHP CC Sabathia turned his first start of at least 7 1/3 innings with three or less hits allowed since pitching eight shutout innings against Oakland on Sept. 21, 2012. He also has a 1.47 ERA, which is his lowest through three starts since the 2011 season. Unlike 2012 when he might have done it with high velocity, Sabathia is mixing in a fastball around 92 mph to go along with crafty breaking pitches. "It's always fun to throw 97," he said. "I don't really miss it though." Saturday also marked his 225th career win, surpassing Hall of Famers Jim Bunning (224) and Catfish Hunter (224) for sole possession of 66th place on baseball's all-time wins list.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Ervin Santana pitched a one-hitter for his ninth career shutout and the Minnesota Twins scored five runs in the first inning to beat the Chicago White Sox 6-0 on Saturday.Santana (3-0) gave up one walk, struck out eight and extended his scoreless innings streak to 18. Minnesota earned a split in the first two games of the series.The Twins jumped on White Sox left-hander Jose Quintana (0-3) with four straight hits in the bottom of the first inning. LHP CC Sabathia had another encouraging outing Sunday against Baltimore. Sabathia allowed three runs (two earned) with three strikeouts and four walks over six innings. He became the first Yankees starter to complete six innings this season. "It's just the first week," Sabathia said after the team's 7-3 win over Baltimore. "But I felt fine this was a game we needed to win. And we came out with the win." The 36-year-old left-hander was stellar in his season debut, throwing threw five scoreless innings against the Rays on Tuesday. Sabathia, who went 9-12 with a 3.91 ERA last season, is one of three pitchers since 1967 to start at least one game for the Yankees in nine or more consecutive seasons.
