Schultz got shelled, giving up three earned runs (two home runs) while giving up two hits and two walks across 2.0 innings in Wednesday's loss to the Phillies.

The 29-year-old rookie has been mostly outstanding for the Jays this season, with a sub-1.00 WHIP even after Wednesday night's calamity. In these two innings, he saw his ERA rise from 2.18 to 2.83 and conceded his fifth and sixth home runs of the season. With how crowded the Toronto bullpen is, Schultz can't afford missteps and still remain an integral piece of the late inning puzzle.

Schultz unexpectedly got the call in the ninth inning Thursday in Oakland, recording the final two outs for the first save of his career.

Schultz has enjoyed a good amount of success so far in the Toronto bullpen, but hadn't seen a lot of high-leverage work before being asked to record the final two outs with a three-run lead in this one. Roberto Osuna took the loss after giving up a run Wednesday, but seems likely to continue seeing most of the Jays' relatively uncommon save opportunities.

After getting shelled in his second appearance of the season, Shultz's leash looked short; however, he hasn't given up an earned run since. He's now sitting on a 1.59 ERA with a sub-one WHIP to go with it. He also has at least one strikeout in every appearance he's made this season. While he doesn't see the field in high leverage situations, he's quietly established himself as a reliable right-handed arm in the bullpen.

Schultz got touched up, conceding four runs (two earned) in one inning of work in Sunday's 7-6 victory over the Astros.

In his second major league appearance of the season, Schultz was the victim of both bad luck and sloppy control. Up 3-2, the Jays brought Schultz in for the seventh where he promptly hit the first batter, with things quickly unraveling from there. Schultz is currently occupying the 25th spot on the roster and will likely have a short leash going forward as the Blue Jays' bullpen carousel continues to spin.

Schultz was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo ahead of Friday's series opener against the Twins, Sportsnet's Barry Davis reports.

He'll take over the bullpen spot of Scott Copeland, who was optioned to Triple-A earlier in the day in a corresponding move. The 29-year-old Schultz owns a 1.69 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, and has saved seven games over his 21.1 innings with Buffalo this season.

Schultz was sent to minor league camp on Wednesday, John Lott of the National Post reports.

Schultz had a really strong spring, pitching eight innings, giving up one hit, two walks and no earned runs across seven appearances. Schultz had an up-and-down year in Triple-A Reno last season, going 10-8 with a 6.18 ERA and a 1.63 WHIP, so his demotion to Triple-A isn't all together surprising, particularly with how strong the bullpen has looked even with Aaron Sanchez moving to the rotation.

The Blue Jays claimed Schultz off waivers from the Diamondbacks on Tuesday.

Although he posted a winning record (10-8) at Triple-A Reno this season, Schultz struggled, with a 6.18 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and 1.78 K/BB over 135.1 innings. The 29-year-old can, however, dial up his fastball to the mid-90s, and he also throws a slider and a changeup. The Blue Jays may be inclined to end his run as a starter and have Schultz work exclusively as a reliever next season.

Schultz was optioned to Triple-A Reno on Wednesday.

To make room on the active roster for infielder Cliff Pennington (thumb), the Diamondbacks sent Schultz back to Reno, where he's posted a 5.75 ERA and 1.58 WHIP over 117.1 innings this season. Schultz may get another opportunity to eat some innings as a long man out of the big league bullpen, but it's hard to imagine him getting a chance to start for Arizona.

Schultz has now allowed seven runs in his last two appearances, spanning five innings. Tuesday's outing lowered his ERA from 12.27 to 7.88 in four starts this season. On the positive side, Schultz has issued just one walk in eight innings of work this season.

Schultz allowed five runs on six hits and one walk while striking out two in just 0.2 innings in the Diamondbacks' 9-4 loss to the Pirates on Friday.

Schultz took the loss after his ninth-inning collapse. The 28-year-old reliever was recalled from Triple-A Reno on Tuesday, after posting a 5.75 ERA in 21 starts there. This was the first in three appearances this season that Schultz allowed a run.
