Mon May 1 201701:33RHP Bryan Mitchell pitched ninth and 11th innings Sunday
RHP Bryan Mitchell pitched the ninth and 11th innings Sunday. Yes, you read that right. In between those innings on the mound, he played first base. The Yankees used him there because of LHP Aroldis Chapman high strikeout rate and because LHP Tommy Layne and RHP Adam Warren were unavailable. Mitchell was charged with a fielding error for dropping a foul pop up by C Wellington Castillo. He then made the play on 2B Jonathan Schoop's pop up. "I guess I should have expected the first one to find me," Mitchell said. "That's something that's abnormal to me, but I know I can catch a flyball. I guess I just went back too far and the ball had a lot of spin. I thought I was going to catch it."

Burnett, who had six walks in 7 2/3 innings Aug. 7, 2009 in New York's 15-inning win over the Red Sox.

RHP Bryan Mitchell was called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday, and he likely will start Wednesday in place of Chad Green. Mitchell made six minor league starts after missing four months with a foot injury. He threw 91 pitches in his most recent outing Friday for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre. Mitchell probably will get the start because the Yankees had to use RHP Luis Severino for multiple innings in Sunday's win at Baltimore. As for beyond Wednesday, the Yankees have not stated if he will be the fifth starter, but it seems to be a logical choice based on how drastic Severino's splits are as a starter and reliever. Last year Mitchell had a 6.37 ERA in 29 2/3 innings, though a majority of his struggles occurred after getting hit in the face with a ball while pitching against the Twins.

Mitchell, who has been working his way back from a fractured toe, recorded an 0-3 career mark with a 5.31 ERA and 1.62 WHIP in 23 games over the 2014 and 2015 seasons with the Yankees. The 25-year-old has posted an 0-1 record with a 4.29 ERA while playing for four different teams in the minors this season.
