Fri May 11 201823:06Conforto HR in 9th pushes struggling Mets past Phillies, 3-1
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Michael Conforto hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning off Phillies closer Hector Neris and the New York Mets rallied to beat Philadelphia 3-1 on Friday night.Phillies starter Jake Arrieta allowed five hits over 7 1/3 scoreless innings, and they led 1-0 until Neris allowed a one-out single, Conforto's third homer and a homer to Devin Mesoraco on the next pitch. It was the second blown save in six days for Neris (1-3), both costing Arrieta a victory.Odubel Herrera extended his on-base streak to 40 games with a first-inning home run for the Phillies, who had won four straight. It was only the Mets' second win in 10 games and came in improbable fashion in their first game since an embarrassing gaffe in Wednesday's loss to Cincinnati in which they batted out of order, squashing a first-inning rally.Jeurys Familia (2-1) worked a perfect ninth for the Mets, who had scored two or fewer runs in seven of their previous nine games.CUBS 11, WHITE SOX 2CHICAGO (AP) — Willson Contreras... Fri May 11 201815:55Column: Baby Braves suddenly baseball's most exciting team
ATLANTA (AP) — For John Schuerholz, this all looks so familiar. The youth. The exuberance. The enormous talent.Back in 1991, Schuerholz took over as general manager of an Atlanta Braves team that was on the cusp of greatness. Hall of Famers-to-be Tom Glavine and John Smoltz had worked through their growing pains. Chipper Jones was beginning his climb through the minors, a first overall pick just getting started out on his road to Cooperstown. Now semi-retired but still a prominent figure around the ballpark (and a Hall of Famer, too), Schuerholz sees another group of youngsters poised for something special. The Baby Braves."It's very similar," Schuerholz said. "Same kind of players, same kind of attitude, same kind of buy-in from the fans, who love this energetic, dynamic, exciting kind of baseball."Indeed, after going through a painful but necessary rebuild that has become the model for baseball success (see: World Series champion Houston Astros ) and a still-fresh-in-everyone's-mind signing... Sun May 6 201820:27Cards' Molina has surgery, out 1 month after hit in groin
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Mike Matheny knows all too well the usual aches and pains associated with catching in the major leagues. That experience told the St. Louis Cardinals manager that the pain Yadier Molina was in after being hit in the groin by a foul tip on Saturday was anything but normal.Matheny's intuition proved correct later that night when Molina underwent surgery for what the team called a "pelvic injury with traumatic hematoma." The eight-time All-Star was placed on the 10-day disabled list on Sunday, and he's expected to miss at least four weeks with the injury."It's like nothing you've ever felt," said Matheny, also a catcher during his 13-year playing career. "You're always just hoping it's one of those that just takes a couple of minutes, then it's manageable. But you could see that was a different level."Molina left Saturday's game against the Chicago Cubs after being hit when Kris Bryant tipped a 102-mph pitch from reliever Jordan Hicks.
