Thu Jun 26 201419:16Ernesto Frieri charged with three runs
Ernesto Frieri was charged with three runs in the ninth after entering a 6-1 game Thursday against the Twins.
Frieri dug his own grave and then Joe Smith buried him, giving up a three-run double to Joe Mauer after entering with two outs. The hit took Frieri's ERA from 5.52 to 6.39, and Smith simply retired Kendrys Morales afterwards to earn a save in the 6-4 win. Frieri's problem has been homers, but it was two walks that did him in today. He had allowed just six unintentional walks in 30 1/3 innings entering the game, so it was an odd outing him for him. Needless to say, he's not getting the closing gig back anytime soon.

Thu Jun 19 201419:13Angels plan to use committee at closer
Angels manager Mike Scioscia indicated Thursday that he doesn't have a defined closer.
"I don't think it's any different from what we talked about," Scioscia said when asked if Ernesto Frieri is his closer. "What's different from matching up like we talked about?" The comments came after Cam Bedrosian was used in a save situation Thursday, only to load the bases and be relieved by Frieri, who promptly served up a walk-off grand slam. Frieri is still probably the best bet for saves, but Bedrosian and Joe Smith should also be owned.

Thu Jun 19 201415:54Frieri serves up walkoff grand slam to Swish
Ernesto Frieri served up a walkoff grand slam to Nick Swisher on Thursday afternoon in Cleveland.
Anaheim led 3-1 heading into the bottom of the 10th inning and Cam Bedrosian was brought in for the save. But manager Mike Scoiscia turned back to Frieri after Bedrosian loaded the bases on two walks and a double. That's when Swisher went deep to win it. The Angels' bullpen is a mess right now.

Sun Jun 15 201418:18Angels sticking with Frieri in ninth inning
Angels manager Mike Scioscia indicated Sunday that there has been no change to how he's handling the team's closer role, and that it will continue to be primarily Ernesto Frieri in the ninth inning.
This comes on the heels of Frieri surrendering four runs on five hits without recording an out in the ninth inning against the Braves on Friday. While the vote of confidence sounds reassuring, his 5.46 ERA and 1.29 WHIP on the season paint a troubling picture. Joe Smith should be secured as a handcuff option wherever he's available.

Sun Jun 15 201400:15Frieri surrenders four runs in loss to Braves
Ernesto Frieri surrendered four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning Saturday against the Braves.
Frieri entered the game with Anaheim leading by four runs and yielded three singles, a ground-rule double, and a triple without recording even one out. He now has a hideous 5.46 ERA on the year, but Saturday's blowup was in a non-save situation and the Angels wound up winning the game in extras so Frieri's hold on the closer role might be safe.

Tue Jun 10 201401:16Frieri punches out all 3 batters to earn save
Ernesto Frieri struck out the side in the ninth inning to finish off the A's in Monday's 4-1 win.
Frieri has struck out multiple batters in three straight appearances, all of which ended in saves. The 28-year-old has pitched on four consecutive days, so you would think Joe Smith might get a save chance if one presents itself Tuesday. Smith, however, has pitched in three of four. Manager Mike Scioscia is hoping for a blowout win.

Sun Jun 8 201420:34Frieri strikes out two to lock down 10th save
Ernesto Frieri worked around a couple of baserunners to earn his 10th save of the season against the White Sox on Sunday.
Dayan Viciedo doubled with one out and Adam Dunn was intentionally walked to bring the winning run to the plate, but Frieri got Adrian Nieto to strike out looking to end the threat. He had two strikeouts in the inning and now owns a 4.33 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 33/7 K/BB ratio over 27 innings.

Wed May 28 201401:29Frieri gives up a run but earns 7th save
Ernesto Frieri survived a shaky ninth inning Tuesday against the Mariners to earn his seventh save of the season.
Frieri notched the first two outs quickly, but the third one proved evasive. He walked Michael Saunders, gave up an RBI single to Robinson Cano, and walked Justin Smoak before he got Kyle Seager to fly out to center. This was the first time he's given up a run since May 6. Manager Mike Scioscia has been hesitant to say it, but Frieri is officially the Angels' closer again.

Sun May 25 201419:25Frieri closes out Royals for 6th save Sunday
Ernesto Frieri tossed a scoreless ninth inning against the Royals to earn his sixth save of the season on Sunday.
Frieri gave up a double to Salvador Perez with one out, but he got Lorenzo Cain to fly out before inducing a pop up from Alcides Escobar to end the threat. He's now converted four straight save opportunities since being reinstated as the closer, and he owns an impressive 27/4 K/BB ratio in 21 1/3 innings of work. His early struggles appear to be behind him.

Tue May 13 201422:14Frieri picks up fifth save in Angels victory
Ernesto Frieri tossed a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his fifth save as the Angels defeated the Phillies on Tuesday.
Frieri was recently reinstated to his role as the Angels' closer and he seems to have gotten on the right track. He walked one and struck out one against the Phillies and has racked up scoreless outings in seven out of his last eight appearances.

Fri May 9 201423:14Ernesto Frieri picks up fourth save
Ernesto Frieri got the call in the ninth inning Friday and pitched a perfect inning for his fourth save against the Jays.
Frieri should officially be back in the closer's role now. Joe Smith pitched the eighth tonight and gave up a homer that tied the game before the Angels went back ahead in the top of the ninth. Frieri struck out two in his frame. He took a loss on Tuesday, but that's the lone run he's allowed in his last seven appearances.

Wed May 7 201401:12Frieri coughs up game, snaps scoreless streak
Ernesto Frieri allowed a Brian Roberts solo homer in the top of the ninth inning to take the loss in Tuesday's 4-3 setback against the Yankees.
Frieri earned the save on Monday when Joe Smith was too ill to take over in the ninth. He may have lost a little momentum in his quest to reclaim the closer's job tonight, allowing a run for the first time since his April 23 implosion in which Frieri allowed four runs against the Nationals. He totes an ugly 6.28 ERA, but his peripherals -- including a 1.26 WHIP and 17/3 K/BB rate -- show he's been better than that.

Tue May 6 201401:29Frieri reclaims closer's gig with 1-2-3 save
Ernesto Frieri reclaimed the closer's role by tossing a perfect ninth inning to finish off the Yankees in Monday's 4-1 win.
Angels manager Mike Scioscia hinted Sunday that he might go back to Frieri, and he did just that, despite Joe Smith's effectiveness during a brief stint. The old Frieri was back tonight, as he blew away Jacoby Ellsbury and Mark Teixeira, and was within one strike of also whiffing Brian McCann. Frieri has now strung together five straight scoreless appearances.

Sun May 4 201422:43Frieri could soon return to closer's role
Angels manager Mike Scioscia said Sunday that he wouldn't commit to using Joe Smith in the ninth inning beyond Sunday, hinting that Ernesto Frieri could soon reclaim his closer's role.
While a change may not be immediate, Scioscia quipped "Our optimum bullpen is really with Ernie back in the ninth inning and being able to move Joe Smith around." While Smith has been terrific in saving his first three chances, it seems Scioscia still prefers him in high-leverage situations earlier in the game with Frieri in the ninth.

Sun May 4 201400:46Ernesto Frieri perfect in eighth
Ernesto Frieri pitched a perfect eighth with a 4-3 lead to earn a hold Saturday against the Rangers.
Since losing the closer's role, Frieri has pitched 4 2/3 perfect innings, lowering his ERA from 9.35 to 6.57. He should get another look in the ninth soon enough.

Fri Apr 25 201417:18Ernesto Frieri demoted from closer role
Ernesto Frieri has been demoted from the Angels' closer role.
Manager Mike Scioscia publicly supported Frieri just a couple days ago, but he's obviously had a changed of heart. It's hard to blame him after the reliever put up a 9.35 ERA over his first 10 appearances. Scioscia said he's confident Frieri will "get it back" eventually, but for now Joe Smith will close. Frieri will be used in low-leverage situations for a while.

Wed Apr 23 201422:44Nats walk off after Ernesto Frieri blows save
Ernesto Frieri blew his second save of the season, allowing four runs as the Nationals walked off winners in the bottom of the ninth.
Frieri, who saved 37 games for the Angels last season, has not been able to get the job done in the early going. Against the Nationals, he allowed a home run to Jose Lobaton to lead off the ninth, then got a strike out. From there, he allowed a single, a walk, a two-run double, and a walk-off RBI single to Adam LaRoche. On the season, Frieri has struck out 12 in 9 1/3 innings, but has also allowed five home runs. One has to wonder if he may be running out of time to right the ship.

Mon Apr 21 201422:57Ernesto Frieri gives up homer, gets save
Despite giving up his fourth homer of the year, Ernesto Frieri recorded his second save Monday against the Nationals.
Frieri gave up the long ball to Ian Desmond leading off the ninth, but he struck out the other three guys he faced. The early homer barrage is certainly a concern for Frieri owners, but since he has the 11/1 K/BB ratio in 8 1/3 innings, he's managed to survive, blowing just one save. He should get better.

Tue Apr 15 201401:15Frieri coughs up Jaso's 2-run HR, blows save
Ernesto Frieri blew his first save of the season by coughing up John Jaso's two-run ninth-inning homer in Monday's 3-2 loss to the A's.
Frieri allowed a leadoff single to Josh Donaldson, retired Yoenis Cespedes on a fly out in which Cespedes thought he had called time, and then got careless up in the zone with Jaso, who blasted a no-doubter out to right. The closer proceeded to cough up singles to Alberto Callaspo and Nick Punto before Mike Scioscia yanked him to boos (Jose Alvarez escaped the inning with no further damage inflicted). Angels fans are calling for Frieri's head already, but they should keep in mind that he was 37-for-41 in save opportunities last year (albeit it with a poor 3.80 ERA and 1.24 WHIP). Besides, he entered tonight having allowed only one baserunner over four consecutive scoreless frames. Joe Smith isn't going to leapfrog him tomorrow, but Frieri is advised to cut down on that 6.75 ERA next time out.

Thu Apr 10 201401:14Frieri tosses scoreless 9th to earn 1st save
Ernesto Frieri pitched around a walk to hurl a scoreless ninth inning and earn his first save of the season in a 2-0 win against Seattle on Wednesday.
Frieri didn't get an easy lineup draw, but he induced a Robinson Cano ground out and whiffed Corey Hart around a Justin Smoak walk. Kyle Seager provided Seattle's last chance to push the Mariners' record to 5-0 against the Angels this season, but Frieri fooled him into a game-ending grounder to second. Back on April 2, Frieri coughed up two homers in his first appearance of the season versus Seattle. He hasn't given up a run in two outings since.
