Mon Oct 2501:34Charlie Morton To Start Against Astros In Game 1Charlie MortonSPBravesFree Agent
Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Charlie Morton will start in Game 1 of the World Series in Houston on Tuesday against his former team, the Houston Astros. Morton pitched for Houston in both 2017 and 2018 and earned the win for the Astros in Game 7 of the 2017 World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers by tossing the final four innings. The veteran right-hander also faced the Astros in the 2019 Division Series and the 2020 American League Championship Series. Morton has pitched well in three starts for Atlanta this postseason, posting a 3.77 ERA with 19 strikeouts in 14 1/3 innings, but the Astros will be a tough task on the road. It will be the third time in the last five years that Morton has pitched in the World Series, each time for a different team.

Mon Oct 2501:29Jake Meyers' World Series Status In DoubtJake MeyersCFAstrosFree Agent
It's unknown if Houston Astros outfielder Jake Meyers (shoulder) will be included on the roster for the World Series. Meyers was on the roster for the American League Championship Series against the Boston Red Sox despite suffering a left shoulder injury while crashing into the wall in the Division Series against the Chicago White Sox. The Astros thought Meyers could recover and play in the ALCS, but he suffered a setback with his shoulder. Houston was unable to replace Meyers on the ALCS roster, but he was available to pinch hit and pinch run later in the series. With Meyers unavailable on defense, Chas McCormick started four games and Jose Siri started twice in center field against Boston.

Mon Oct 2501:25Lance McCullers Jr. Unlikely To Pitch In World SeriesLance McCullers Jr.SPAstrosFree Agent
Houston Astros starting pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. (forearm) has yet to throw a baseball since straining his right forearm muscle in Game 4 of the American League Division Series against the Chicago White Sox two weeks ago and is unlikely to be on the World Series roster. The Astros aren't officially ruling McCullers out with final rosters having to be set on Tuesday morning, but McCullers' odds of being on the roster aren't good. "We're going to take everything we can to see how he responds," general manager James Click said. "We're not taking anything off the table. We're going to see how he is. It's the World Series. I know Lance wants to be out there if he can." The good news is that McCullers doesn't have any structural damage and should be ready for the 2022 season.

Mon Oct 2501:21Framber Valdez To Start Game 1 Of World SeriesFramber ValdezSPAstrosFree Agent
Houston Astros left-hander Framber Valdez has been tabbed to start Game 1 of the World Series against the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday in Houston. Valdez tossed eight innings of one-run ball in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series against the Boston Red Sox and will be starting on regular rest. It's expected that rookie right-hander Luis Garcia will start Game 2 on Wednesday, with right-hander Jose Urquidy going in Game 3 on Friday in Atlanta. Veteran right-hander Zack Greinke figures to be in the mix to start Game 4 after throwing only 1 1/3 innings in his start in Game 4 of the ALCS now that Lance McCullers Jr. (forearm) won't be available for the Fall Classic.

Sat Oct 2317:35Franchy Cordero Designated For Assignment On ThursdayFranchy CorderoLFRed SoxFree Agent
The Boston Red Sox designated outfielder Franchy Cordero for assignment on Thursday. Boston needed the roster space to reinstate right-handed pitcher Phillips Valdez from the COVID-19 Related Injured List. Cordero was traded to Boston in February as part of the three-team trade that sent Andrew Benintendi to the Kansas City Royals. The former Kansas City outfielder hit .189 with a .237 on-base percentage, a home run, and a stolen base in 136 plate appearances for the Red Sox this past season.

Sat Oct 2317:16Albert Pujols On The Bench For NLCS Game 6Albert Pujols1B/DHDodgersFree Agent
Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Albert Pujols isn't in the lineup on Saturday for Game 6 of the National League Championship Series. The veteran collected a pair of hits, two runs scored, and a walk in Los Angeles' Game 5 win. However, he'll head to the bench with right-handed starter Ian Anderson on the mound for the Atlanta Braves. Most of Pujols' plate appearances this postseason have come against left-handed pitching. It'll be Matt Beaty getting the start at first base and batting eighth against Anderson. Pujols is hitting .333 with a .375 on-base percentage in 16 plate appearances for the Dodgers in the playoffs this year.

Atlanta Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman is hitting second for Game 6 of the National League Championship Series on Saturday. The veteran had hit second in the lineup for the entirety of the series against the Los Angeles Dodgers before Atlanta's Game 5 loss when he hit third behind outfielder Eddie Rosario and second baseman Ozzie Albies. Rosario is once again hitting leadoff with Albies batting third after Freeman against Dodgers right-hander Walker Buehler. In 401 plate appearances batting second during the regular season, the first baseman hit .300 with a .399 on-base percentage, a 137 wRC+, and 17 home runs.

Sat Oct 2313:52Ljay Newsome Claimed By CardinalsLjay NewsomeRPMarinersFree Agent
St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Ljay Newsome (elbow) was claimed off waivers from the Seattle Mariners Friday. Newsome threw 30 1/3 innings in his Mariners career, working to a 6.53 ERA in 12 appearances and five starts. He is currently recovering from Tommy John surgery. It is not expected that he will be ready to start the 2022 season, but he figures to be a depth option both in the bullpen and the starting rotation in St. Louis. Fantasy managers don't need to take note until midseason next year at the earliest.

Sat Oct 2313:48Shed Long Jr. Among Players Outrighted Off Mariners RosterShed Long Jr.2BMarinersFree Agent
Seattle Mariners utility man Shed Long Jr. (shin) was one of a number of players outrighted off the 40-man roster Friday. Utility man Sam Haggerty, pitcher Darren McCaughan, outfielder Marcus Wilson, and pitcher Ryan Weber were also sent to Triple-A. Long Jr. and Weber have both elected free agency. It's been a tough road for Long Jr., who has had each of the last two seasons end with shin issues. There's some power and speed upside, but it's hard to imagine Long Jr. being a factor for fantasy managers entering 2022 no matter where he ends up.

Sat Oct 2313:43Nathan Eovaldi Takes Loss As Red Sox OustedNathan EovaldiSPRed SoxFree Agent
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi has been a playoff hero in the past, but he couldn't do enough to force a Game 7 in Friday night's ALCS Game 6 loss to the Houston Astros. Eovaldi threw 4 1/3 innings, allowing one run on five hits and a walk with four strikeouts, but even the one run was too much to overcome as Boston fell 5-0. Eovaldi finishes the 2021 playoffs with a 2-2 record, having allowed a 4.79 ERA and 1.16 WHIP with 25 strikeouts across 20 2/3 innings in five appearances and four starts. He'll enter 2022 as an under-the-radar top option at starting pitcher.

Walker BuehlerSPDodgersFree Agent
The Los Angeles Dodgers will turn to starting pitcher Walker Buehler on short rest for Game 6 of the National League Championship Series on Saturday, with starter Max Scherzer dealing with general arm fatigue. Buehler has made three starts this postseason and last pitched on Oct. 19. Scherzer admitted to having "dead arm" during his 79-pitch start in Game 2 against the Braves when he allowed two runs on four hits in 4 1/3 innings. It's unknown if Mad Max would be available to pitch in a potential Game 7 on Sunday, but the team is holding out hope that he'll feel better. Buehler made his first start on short rest in Game 4 of the Division Series against the San Francisco Giants and gave up just one run in 4 1/3 innings.

Fri Oct 2212:40Joe Kelly Expected To Miss Rest Of PlayoffsJoe KellyRPDodgersFree Agent
Los Angeles Dodgers right-handed reliever Joe Kelly (biceps), who served as the opener in the Game 5 win over the Atlanta Braves in the National League Championship Series on Thursday, is likely to miss the rest of the playoffs after he left in the first inning with a right biceps strain. Kelly had a nice 2.86 ERA in 48 relief outings during the regular season and had become a critical middle-innings piece of the Dodgers pitching staff. It seems likely that veteran left-hander David Price will replace Kelly on the NLCS roster with the series heading back to Atlanta for Game 6 on Saturday. Price had a 4.03 ERA in 39 appearances this season and didn't pitch at all in the Division Series against the San Francisco Giants. Kelly threw 28 pitches and allowed a two-run homer to Freddie Freeman before getting yanked in two-thirds of an inning Thursday.

Fri Oct 2212:28Chris Sale Takes Game 5 LossChris SaleSPRed SoxFree Agent
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Chris Sale started out sharp in Wednesday's ALCS Game 5 against the Houston Astros, but ultimately he took the loss after allowing four runs (two earned) on three hits and two walks in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out seven batters. Sale has put up an 8.00 ERA with a 1.78 WHIP in his three starts and nine innings this postseason. For his career, he's an unimpressive 1-3 with a 6.35 ERA in 10 playoff appearances. Sale could still regain his form as a top starter next season, but there's plenty of reason for pause as he continues to make his way back to full strength after Tommy John surgery.

Boston Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers homered again in Boston's Game 5 loss to the Houston Astros Wednesday, going 2-for-3 with the solo shot. The Red Sox only managed three hits total against Framber Valdez and Ryne Stanek. Devers now has a nine-game hit streak, with five playoff homers, including three in his last four games. He has a .998 career postseason OPS in 85 at-bats and can be counted upon in any situation by fantasy managers in all formats.

Luis GarciaSPAstrosFree Agent
Houston Astros right-hander Luis Garcia (knee) will start Game 6 of the American League Championship Series against the Boston Red Sox on Friday. Garcia was only able to go one inning against Boston in his Game 2 start, allowing five runs and leaving with a right knee strain. His knee had been a problem before his start last Saturday, but Garcia has since made some changes to the lower half of his body to ensure that he won't put added stress on his knee. Garcia isn't worried about his knee and said it "feels good." The AL Rookie of the Year candidate went 6-5 with a 2.39 ERA at home, compared to 5-3 with a 4.24 ERA on the road in 2021. Garcia has the talent to keep Boston's bats cold, but he'll be a much riskier DFS play with the knee issue fresh in the rearview mirror.

Thu Oct 2123:30Joe Kelly Injured In NLCS Game 5Joe KellyRPDodgersFree Agent
Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Joe Kelly (biceps) left his outing as an opener in the first inning of Game 5 of the National League Championship Series against the Atlanta Braves on Thursday in the first inning with right biceps tightness. Kelly threw 28 pitches and allowed a two-run home run to first baseman Freddie Freeman before departing the game with trainers in just two-thirds of an inning. He was replaced by right-hander Evan Phillips. This was Kelly's first start of the season after 48 regular season appearances in relief. It's unclear if Kelly's injury is serious enough to keep him out for the remainder of the series against the Braves, which will head back to Atlanta on Saturday for Game 6.
