CLEVELAND (AP) — Miguel Cabrera's sweet, powerful swing hasn't been the same this season. Now it's clear why. Cabrera has been dealing with soreness in his left biceps, and the Detroit Tigers decided to put the All-Star slugger on the 10-day disabled list Sunday to undergo testing and find out exactly what's wrong with one of baseball's best hitters. Cabrera, who is closing in on 500 career home runs and other milestones, played first base in Saturday's 11-3 loss to the Indians. He went 0 for 3 at the plate, and manager A.J. Hinch said Cabrera felt his biceps “grab” during an at-bat in the seventh inning. Hinch could tell Cabrera was altering his swing — he isn't releasing one hand on his follow-through — and felt it was time to shut him down before the injury worsened. “I told him after the game I don’t want him to keep fighting it and get it checked out and put him on the injured list to make sure we nip this pretty early,” Hinch said before the Tigers were beaten 5-2 and swept by the... ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — San Diego Padres left-hander Adrian Morejon left a start Sunday at Texas with an elbow-forearm strain after facing only three batters in the first inning. Morejon threw 16 pitches, leaving after a four-pitch, two-out walk to Joey Gallo. He’ll be re-evaluated Monday. Morejon, 22, was making his second start of the season. He worked four innings at home against Arizona last Monday and allowed two runs, both on home runs, and got a no-decision in the Padres’ 3-2 loss. Morejon appeared in 14 games for the Padres during the previous two seasons, including six starts, without a decision. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Rougned Odor was in the lineup for the New York Yankees for the first time Sunday, sporting a new look that includes more than a uniform change. The clean-shaven infielder complied with his new team’s longstanding facial hair policy by getting rid of the long beard he rocked with the Texas Rangers, who traded him to the Yankees last week for minor league outfielders Antonio Cabello and Josh Stowers. “It was weird. I feel weird,” Odor said of being beardless. “Even my daughter, she didn’t even want to look at me. It is what it is. I’m happy to be here.” The 27-year-old cleared in-take protocol and was added to the roster Saturday. He started at second base and batted sixth in Sunday’s finale of a weekend series against the Tampa Bay Rays. Odor, who did not make the Rangers’ opening day roster and was designated for assignment on April 1, was excited to be joining a team he said “every kid wants to grow up and play” for. “When I found out I got traded to this team... CHICAGO (AP) — More than 90% of the traveling party for the Chicago White Sox got the COVID-19 vaccine after their home opener, moving the team closer to meeting Major League Baseball's threshold for relaxing some of the protocols put in place for the pandemic. Showing an unusual amount of transparency for the sport, the White Sox announced the step before Sunday's game against the Kansas City Royals. The team said in a release that “virtually the entire” traveling party had received the one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine, and general manager Rick Hahn put the number at “well in excess of 90%.” “We got to an extraordinarily high percentage of those eligible participating and we couldn’t be happier with that,” Hahn said. In its release, the team thanked the city, the Chicago Department of Public Health and Rush University Medical Center for their help with the vaccinations. DUNEDIN, Fla. (AP) — Los Angeles Angels outfielder Dexter Fowler has a torn ACL in his left knee that requires season-ending surgery. A date for the procedure has not been set. Recovery time is expected to be six to nine months. “Comeback season has commenced,” Fowler said Sunday. “The cards I've been dealt, so you've got to deal with them and go at it like that.” Fowler was hurt when he took an awkward step on second base in Friday night’s game against Toronto. At first he thought he was hit by a thrown ball. The Angels initially thought Fowler had avoided a serious injury but an MRI exam on Saturday found the tear. “The preliminary tests were fine,” Fowler said. “Thought the ACL and everything was fine, and then woke up the next morning and it was kind of sore. ... Went and got an MRI and the doc told me that I tore my ACL and my medial meniscus and strained my MCL.” Fowler doesn't think the injury is career-ending. “I want to continue to play,” the 35-year-old said. “I think I've still... CLEVELAND (AP) — Detroit Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a left biceps strain that has been bothering him during the early part of this season. Cabrera played first base in Saturday's 11-3 loss to the Indians. He went 0 for 3 at the plate before he was replaced by a pinch hitter in the ninth inning. Manager A.J. Hinch said Cabrera has been dealing with soreness for a while and felt it “grab” on a swing in the seventh inning. Hinch said the 11-time All Star will undergo tests Sunday in Cleveland. He'll stay with the team and travel with the Tigers to Houston. The 37-year-old Cabrera, who has 488 career home runs, is off to a slow start in 2021. He is batting just .125 (3 for 24) with one homer and three RBIs in seven games. To replace Cabrera, the Tigers selected the contract of infielder Renato Nunez. Cabrera's injury is the second significant one for the Tigers this weekend. On Saturday, starter Julio Teheran was placed on the injured list with a shoulder strain and he could miss months. Detroit moved him to the 60-day injured list Sunday. Hinch said Teheran will undergo more testing, but in the last 24 hours it has become clearer that he will be out much longer than initially expected. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

A look at what’s happening around the majors Sunday: EXTRA TROUBLE The Twins have lost three times this season -- all of them in 10th inning with the automatic runner on second base. “The game, as we are used to playing it, does change, and we have to adapt to that,” Minnesota manager Rocco Baldelli said. Seattle topped the Twins 4-3 in the 10th on Saturday, helped when Minnesota reliever Taylor Rogers couldn’t get a clean grip on a bunt. “We’re talking bunts. We’re talking choppers. We’re talking putting the ball in play, making a play in the field, and that’s the difference between a win or a loss. Sometimes it stings,” Baldelli said. LIKE THOSE LEFTIES AL MVP José Abreu and the White Sox will try to win their 18th straight game facing a left-handed starter. That would tie the major league record set by Atlanta from 2004-05. The White Sox get their chance when they host lefty Mike Minor and the Royals. Chicago’s streak dates to a loss to Detroit on Sept. 28, 2019, when lefty Tyler Alexander... [More]

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Victor Caratini is a no-no catcher. When hometown pitcher Joe Musgrove threw the first no-hitter for the San Diego Padres in their franchise history, Caratini became the first MLB catcher to be behind the plate for consecutive no-hitters in the league for different teams. “He was the first one to embrace me,” Musgrove said of Caratini. “And it just felt good. I know he wanted that as bad as I did.” While Musgrove had never thrown a no-hitter at any level, Caratini was on the receiving end last Sept. 13 when Alec Mills threw one for the Chicago Cubs at Milwaukee. The offseason acquisitions by the Padres got one together Friday night in a 3-0 win against the Rangers in Texas. “Just super happy. I think it’s pretty rare to find yourself in those situations,” Caratini said Saturday through a translator. “Joe had everything working, had all of his pitches working. It’s really awesome. CLEVELAND (AP) — Tigers starter Julio Teheran could miss significant time with a strained shoulder suffered while warming up for a start on Friday night. The team placed the right-hander on the 10-day injured list Saturday, but Detroit manager A.J. Hinch indicated Teheran may need a lot longer to recover. “He's going to miss quite a few starts,” Hinch said. “He's not going to be throwing. A shoulder strain is very difficult to manage. He's going to be shut down for a period of time.” Teheran earned a spot in Detroit's rotation after signing a minor league contract with a non-roster invitation to spring training. On Friday, he was warming up for his second start when he felt tightness in his triceps. The 30-year-old had beaten the Indians last week in his debut for the Tigers. Teheran told pitching coach Chris Fetter and Hinch he could pitch, but the team scratched him to avoid further injury and reliever Derek Holland made an emergency start. CLEVELAND (AP) — Detroit Tigers starter Julio Teheran was placed on the 10-day injured list with a strained right shoulder that bumped him from a scheduled start on Friday. Detroit announced the move — retroactive to Wednesday — on Saturday, a day after Teheran was scratched from the series opener against Cleveland when he felt tightness in his triceps while warming up. The 30-year-old had beaten the Indians last week in his debut for the Tigers. Teheran was throwing his final pitches in the bullpen when he felt the discomfort. He told pitching coach Chris Fetter and manager A.J. Hinch he could pitch, but the team scratched him to avoid further injury and reliever Derek Holland made an emergency start. Holland gave up a two-run homer to Franmil Reyes in the first inning of Detroit's 4-1 loss. With Teheran likely to miss at least one turn in the rotation, Michael Fulmer is expected to take his spot. Fulmer pitched four innings against the Indians, allowing a solo homer to Reyes and an infield... [More]

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — San Diego Padres right-hander Joe Musgrove hasn't allowed a hit through eight innings against the Texas Rangers in only his second start for his hometown team that has never had a no-hitter. The Padres are the only current MLB franchise to never throw a no-hitter. Musgrove faced 25 batters, only one over the minimum, through eight innings Friday night. The only Rangers baserunner was Joey Gallo after getting hit by a pitch with two outs in the fourth. Musgrove has 10 strikeouts and has thrown 69 of his 103 pitches for strikes. He worked quickly through the eighth, needing just 13 pitches. Texas' Jose Trevino hit a sharp liner directly at right fielder Wil Myers for the third out. San Diego had left-hander Tim Hill warming briefly during the seventh inning, but he sat for the top of the eighth. Musgrove appeared set to return for the ninth. The Rangers have been held without a hit three times, the last by Mark Buehrle of the Chicago White Sox in 2007. San Diego acquired the big 28-year-old Musgrove as part of a seven-player, three-team trade on Jan. 19. He pitched for Pittsburgh last season. In his debut for San Diego, which came at home last Saturday, he struck out eight in six scoreless innings against Arizona. DUNEDIN, Fla. (AP) — The Toronto Blue Jays have placed outfielder Teoscar Hernández on the injured list after he was exposed to someone with a positive coronavirus case outside of the team. Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo said Friday the team is conducting contact tracing and testing in accordance with Major League Baseball's guidelines after Hernández's close contact. “That's all I can tell you about it right now,” Montoyo said. Left-hander Ryan Borucki also went on the injured list with vaccine side effects, which included a fever and fatigue. He was sent home after arriving at the ballpark for Friday night's game against the Los Angeles Angels. Left fielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. left after two innings in Friday night's game with vaccination-related symptoms. A number of Toronto players received shots before Thursday's game with the Angels. Montoyo got his second vaccination and said after the game that he felt a little tired. “A lot of teams are going through this right now,” Montoyo said. “We'll get better soon.” Toronto placed right-hander Tyler Chatwood on the 10-day IL with right triceps inflammation. Outfielder Josh Palacios and pitchers Ty Tice and Joel Payamps were recalled from the alternate training site. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
