Wed Mar 28 201805:00Ohtani starts Sunday, Dodgers clean up, Vlad Jr walks off
Shohei Ohtani has a starting assignment, and the Los Angeles Dodgers have a mess on their hands. With the regular season set to begin Thursday, the Angels scheduled Ohtani to make his major league pitching debut Sunday in their fourth game at Oakland. The two-way sensation from Japan is expected to be Los Angeles' designated hitter in at least one of the first three games, but manager Mike Scioscia said Tuesday night the team hadn't decided on an opening-day lineup yet.The 23-year-old Ohtani, who struggled in spring training, was told after the exhibition finale against the Dodgers that he'll pitch Sunday."He's gotten into the mid-80-pitch range and should be able to get over 90 if he's throwing to his capabilities," Scioscia said. "That's plenty of pitches for him to get deep into the game. We're going to take it one pitch at a time with all of our pitchers."Ohtani was supposed to get an at-bat or two Tuesday night but that didn't happen because the game was called in the bottom of the... Thu Mar 22 201814:38Rockies look to reel in playoff spot for 2nd straight season
DENVER (AP) — Charlie Blackmon didn't need much baiting: The lure of a fishing contest in the middle of spring training was incentive enough. So the quirky Colorado Rockies outfielder/avid outdoorsman slipped into some waders and grabbed his fishing rod for a game to see which player could most accurately cast at cans set up on the turf.Anything for team bonding.Next on the line is an even more prized catch — reeling in a postseason berth for a second straight season. The Rockies are driven by an 11-8 loss to Arizona in the NL wild card game that halted their season."We have all the pieces that we need to be very competitive," Blackmon said. "We're well positioned to play better than last year."Hard to argue. Manager Bud Black's lineup features an NL batting champion in Blackmon , along with a power-hitting, smooth-fielding third baseman in Nolan Arenado. The team added a veteran catcher in Chris Iannetta and brought back popular clubhouse leader Carlos Gonzalez on a one-year deal. They won't... [More]

He can earn $1 million in performance bonuses this year. The 32-year-old Walker hit .265 with 14 home runs and 49 RBIs last season, then became a free agent. "I'm happy to be here, happy to be on a contending team."Starting pitcher Lance Lynn got right to work with Minnesota after finalizing his $12 million, one-year deal. Clayton Kershaw's second spring training outing went according to plan, save for one poor throw to first. The ace left-hander breezed through two scoreless innings for the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday, allowing one hit and walking one during a 7-6 victory over the Chicago White Sox at Glendale, Arizona. He worked a perfect inning in his spring training debut against Seattle on Sunday."Another step. Another inning," Kershaw said. "Definitely things I can do better, but for the most part I'll take it. It was all right. I made some good pitches when I needed to. I made some bad ones, too. Enough to work on for the next one."Leury Garcia dropped a single into left in the first for Chicago's only hit off Kershaw. Garcia raced all the way to third when Kershaw made a wild throw on a pickoff attempt, but Jose Abreu and Avisail Garcia grounded out to end the inning."I just tried to be a little too quick," Kershaw said, looking back on his fielding miscue. Thu Jan 18 201817:49Dombrowski: Red Sox prepared to go to camp without new bat
BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Red Sox may head to spring training without the middle-of-the-lineup hitter they have been seeking since David Ortiz retired at the end of the 2016 season. That's by necessity, not choice. After saying all winter that he would like a big bat to address the power outage that left the Red Sox last in the AL in homers in 2017, president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said on Thursday that he's prepared to move forward without one."We'll keep working at it," Dombrowski said before the awards dinner for the Boston chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America. "But I do think we have a good club, no matter what."After leading the majors in runs in 2016, Ortiz's last season before he retired, the Red Sox won 93 years for the second straight year in '17 to claim the first back-to-back AL East titles in franchise history. But without Ortiz, the offensive production plummeted: They were sixth in runs, and Mookie Betts led the team with 24 homers, the fewest... [More]

Blackmon had 383 total bases — the most by a leadoff hitter for a season. His 37 homers tied him with Marcell Ozuna and Rockies teammate Nolan Arenado for third-most in the NL.In other deals, second baseman DJ LeMahieu agreed to an $8.5 million deal after making $4.85 million in 2017. He played in a career-high 155 games last season, hit .310 and made the All-Star team.Right-hander Chad Bettis agreed to $2 million deal, up from $545,000 in 2017. He was one of the... [More]

RHP Chad Bettis allowed four hits and one run in a season-high-tying seven innings with one walk and four strikeouts. It was the third time he pitched seven innings, something he did Aug. 14 and 19 in his first two starts for the Rockies after overcoming testicular cancer. Bettis is 2-4 with both wins coming against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

RHP Chad Bettis (1-4) took the loss Saturday night but he was fairly effective. He allowed one run, the fewest he has relinquished this season since his first start Aug. 14 versus the Braves. He did not allow run in that outing.
Sun Sep 17 201705:23RHP Chad Bettis will not start Wednesday at San Francisco
RHP Chad Bettis will not start Wednesday at San Francisco. Tyler Chatwood, who is 4-1 with a 1.67 ERA in seven starts at AT&T Park, will face the Giants on regular rest as the Rockies, who are off Monday, are able to skip Bettis, who is coming off a horrendous start and has struggled lately. Because of the off day, the Rockies won't need a fifth starter until Sept. 23 when Bettis could return to the rotation. In his last start Thursday at Arizona, Bettis gave up three hits, three walks and five runs in one-third of an inning while throwing 17 of 34 pitches for strikes. After returning from testicular cancer to make his 2017 Rockies debut Aug. 14, Bettis went 0-0 with a 1.93 in his first two starts but in five subsequent starts is 1-3 with a 9.15 ERA. Manager Bud Black said since his last start at Arizona, Bettis has been working -- and will continue to work -- on getting his head and upper body more directly lined toward home plate. "That's going to keep the fastball truer," Black said. "It's going to keep the fastball on line a little bit more."
