INF Paul Goldschmidt wasn't in the lineup Monday with a lingering right elbow issue. He returned to Arizona to have an MRI but as long as that is negative, he's expected to play Tuesday.

1B Paul Goldschmidt, who was 0-for-8 in the first two games of the series, was not in the lineup for the first time since July 22, snapping a 39-game streak. It was the fifth time he has been out of the lineup this season. Manager Torey Lovullo cited the long stretch of games Goldschmidt has played and said the effects of playing at mile-high altitude in Denver went into the decision to rest Goldschmidt and RF J.D. Martinez, who played 14 straight games since his last day off Aug. 18. "It's proven science that your body just doesn't recover as quickly," Lovullo said. "Coming in to Colorado we took several days off from (batting practice) to prepare for the three games in Colorado. I wanted to give some guys some time off, and then you're going to see some guys get some rest coming out of Colorado. It just makes a lot of sense to me to make sure that these guys are healthy and strong."

1B Paul Goldschmidt went 0-for-5 with three strikeouts and didn't hit the ball out of the infield. In the first two games of the series, Goldschmidt is hitless in eight at-bats and has hit one ball out of the infield -- a deep drive to right-center on his first at-bat Friday.

1B Paul Goldschmidt became the first player in franchise history with three 30-homer, 100-RBI seasons with one swing Friday. His three-run homer in the fourth inning was his 30th, and it gave him 101 RBIs. "Honestly, my only focus is not on any numbers or individual stuff," Goldschmidt said. "We are here in the playoff race. Find a way to help us win tonight and do the same thing tomorrow. Of course they mean more when it is not like a blowout win. When I'm able to come through, it's nice." Luis Gonzalez had two 30/100 seasons. "Nothing against Arizona, but if (Goldschmidt) was on the East Coast he would be getting a lot of recognition for what he does," Arizona C Chris Iannetta said.

Wed Aug 16 201707:081B Paul Goldschmidt and RF J.D
1B Paul Goldschmidt and RF J.D. Martinez are candidates to serve as DH in the D-backs' two-game series at Houston when the teams switch venues Wednesday. "I like the idea of giving Paul Goldschmidt a half-day off," manager Torey Lovullo said. "It makes the most sense for me. To get Paul off his feet makes a lot of sense to me. I also am thinking about it with J.D." The D-backs also play a three-game interleague series in Minnesota this weekend and finish the regular season with three games in Kansas City.

Sat Aug 5 201712:10MLB roundup: Dodgers blank Mets in Darvish debut
NEW YORK -- Yu Darvish threw seven scoreless innings in his first start for Los Angeles and Chase Utley continued to torment the New York Mets by hitting a two-run homer in the seventh inning of the Dodgers' 6-0 win on Friday at Citi Field. The scorching Dodgers won for the 42nd time in their last 49 games dating back to June 7. The Mets lost for the fifth time in six games.Darvish, who was acquired from the Texas Rangers in exchange for three prospects seconds before the trade deadline Monday, allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out 10. 1B Paul Goldschmidt went 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs, leading the Diamondbacks to a 2-1 victory against San Francisco on Friday night at AT&T Park. "Three hits, two RBIs," Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said. "He's the right guy in the right spot. "Every hitter, every player looks for runs like that. He's locked in doing his job. Without him, we don't win this game." Goldschmidt hit a career-high three home runs and drove in a career-high matching six runs Thursday night in a 10-8 victory against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field, a marathon, back-and-forth game with multiple rain delays. You couldn't have blamed Goldschmidt if he had a letdown against the Giants. But that's an option he refused to consider. Goldschmidt said facing Giants ace Madison Bumgarner helped him and his teammates stay focused. "We were facing Bumgarner, one of the best pitchers in the game," Goldschmidt said. "It's probably a game you could have that letdown game, but there was a lot of focus I saw before the game and during the game as well."

1B Paul Goldschmidt didn't expect to finish Thursday's 10-8 victory over the Chicago Cubs with a couple career milestones. But after his 12th multi-homer performance of his career and first three-homer game while matching a career best with six RBIs, that's exactly what he ended up with. Goldschmidt also set a career best with four runs scored when he entered the game with only one home run at Wrigley Field in 64 career at-bats. "He had one of those special days you dream about," Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said. "The timing couldn't have been any better. It was a great moment for him and a great win for this team."

1B Paul Goldschmidt is experiencing something of a falloff offensively in July following a standout month of June. Goldschmidt has two homers, nine RBIs and 26 strikeouts in July after having seven homers and 27 RBIs in June. Goldschmidt responded by going 2-for-2 with two doubles and three runs scored. "You're watching him get back to doing what he's done much of the year with his approach -- doubling the other way with a lot of force on the ball. When he does that, you know he's in a good hitting position."

Wed Jul 19 201721:23New D-backs slugger Martinez a stranger in strange land
CINCINNATI -- J.D. Martinez walked into the Arizona Diamondbacks' clubhouse at Great American Ball Park on Wednesday afternoon and didn't know anyone, an odd occurrence for someone who has played in the major leagues for seven years, and for teams in both leagues. But, aside from left-handed starter Robbie Ray, with whom he played for one season in Detroit, Martinez was in a completely foreign environment."It'll take me a couple days and settle in," Martinez said, sitting in the visitors' dugout wearing his new D-backs warmup gear. "I look at these colors and it doesn't feel right. But, it's a blessing to be here. It's a chance to go to the playoffs, man. Some people go their whole career and never get that chance."Martinez, however, got off to a rough start with the Diamondbacks, leaving the Wednesday game against the Cincinnati Reds in the fourth inning with a contusion after being hit on the left hand by a pitch. X-rays were negative and he is officially listed as day-to-day.Martinez,... [More]
