Fri Mar 29 201902:41Nationals lose 1st game of 2019 with 2018-type miscues
WASHINGTON (AP) — In some respects, the first game of 2019 felt a bit like a remnant of 2018 all over again for manager Dave Martinez and the Washington Nationals. As much as the roster has been reworked after missing the playoffs, with plenty of folks gone — most prominently, of course, Bryce Harper — and plenty arrived to replace them, the sorts of things that ailed the Nationals last season were again on display in a 2-0 loss to the New York Mets on opening day. That included an up-and-down-the-lineup inability to hit in the clutch and one particularly bad example of baserunning by rookie center fielder Victor Robles."You're going to have a couple shots, and you better make the most of it," right fielder Adam Eaton said. "If you don't, you're not going to be successful."The Nationals wasted Max Scherzer's at-times dominant debut: 12 strikeouts, two hits, two runs in 7 2/3 innings. They were facing the only pitcher who received more NL Cy Young Award votes than Scherzer did last year, Jacob... [More]
Mon Mar 25 201920:01Nationals OF Victor Robles, 21, gets his turn to turn heads
WASHINGTON (AP) — Every team has a "next big thing" in the minors, waiting for the chance to dazzle in the majors, and Washington Nationals fans have been hearing about Victor Robles for years. He's an outfielder whose speed fuels his offense and defense. He's shown power, too. "Toolsy" is the way new Nationals second baseman Brian Dozier described him. "Explosive," was first baseman Ryan Zimmerman's adjective.Robles started in center field and went 0 for 3 in Washington's exhibition finale Monday, a 5-3 victory over the New York Yankees at Nationals Park. That's also where he's expected to be on opening day, finally getting his turn to begin a season in the big leagues, moving into an outfield that lost Bryce Harper to free agency."That's what we work here for, to be an everyday player in the big leagues. I feel physically and mentally ready for that," Robles said in an interview through bullpen catcher Octavio Martinez, who serves as a team translator. "Absolutely, that's something you... [More]

Sat Mar 23 201917:58Nationals' Martinez wants Trea Turner to run more
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Trea Turner led the National League in stolen bases last season, and Washington Nationals manager Dave Martinez wants him to run even more.Turner was successful on 43 of 52 attempts last year. He had a career-high 46 steals in 2017. Martinez wants the speedy shortstop to attempt close to 100 this year.Turner got his third steal of the spring during Saturday's 4-4 tie against St. Louis."He's kind of challenged me with going more," said Turner, who is admittedly hesitant to make outs on the basepaths. "I haven't ran too much in spring training try to save them for the season, but when the season comes around try to push it a little bit."After Bryce Harper left Washington for Philadelphia in free agency, Martinez wants the Nationals to make better use of their speed rather than wait for big home runs."This year as a team we have a chance to steal a lot of bases and run the bases really well, put a lot of pressure on teams," Turner said. "I think we should take... [More]
Mon Mar 11 201917:41Ozuna plays field for 1st time since shoulder surgery
JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Marcell Ozuna's surgically repaired right shoulder was given a quick test.Ozuna played the outfield for the first time since arthroscopic shoulder surgery last Oct. 30. Trea Turner, Washington's second batter in Monday's game against St. Louis, lopped a ball down the left-field line, rounded first and didn't slow down.Ozuna made a one-hop throw to second that Turner barely beat."What I like about that throw was that it was strong — no pain," Ozuna said.He had not started throwing from the outfield to bases until Saturday's drills.Ozuna first felt a pop in his shoulder during a throwing session following the 2014 season. By the end of last season, Ozuna struggled to make even routine throws."Already that throw was more representative than a lot of the throws last year," Cardinals' manager Mike Shildt said.Ozuna, a 28-year-old two-time All-Star, began 0 for 14 at the plate before dribbling a ball through the left side of the Houston infield for a single on Saturday."The... Mon Mar 4 201916:49Nationals newcomer Dozier fixing injury-induced swing flaws
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — His knee healthy, Washington Nationals newcomer Brian Dozier used the early week of spring training to fix some swing flaws."Still kind of tweaking a couple things to get rid of some bad habits I created last year," Dozier said. "In all, everything's going as planned."The left knee bone bruise the 31-year-old Dozier estimates bothered him for 85 percent of last season kept him from firmly planting and staying behind his front leg during a swing, preventing him from driving the ball.Entering his eighth season, Dozier's 172 career home runs — including 42 in 2016 for Minnesota — rank third most among active second basemen behind Robinson Cano and Ian Kinsler. After hitting only 21 homers between the Twins and Los Angeles Dodgers last year, Dozier has launched one this spring in 13 at-bats."I think you'll see the old Dozier now that he's healthy," Washington manager Dave Martinez said.A career .246 hitter, an average depressed by last year's .215 struggle, Dozier... Mon Mar 4 201915:19Royals among few clubs banking on speed to win ballgames
SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) — Brett Phillips has always been the fastest player on his team, whether he was playing in Little League, starring at Seminole High School or climbing the rungs of the minor league ladder. When he looks around the Kansas City Royals' clubhouse, though, the fleet-footed outfielder was left to ask a very sobering and sincere question: "What am I, the 10th fastest now?"Not quite. But just about. You see, the Royals identified a market inefficiency a few years ago when it came to bullpen arms, stockpiling huge talents at low costs and effectively shortening games. The result was twofold: They won back-to-back American League pennants and the 2015 World Series, and every other team noticed what they had done and began to offer big contracts to premier relievers.Unable to keep up with those escalating costs, the Royals turned their attention to speed and defense as they dive headlong into a rebuild. Now, they view stolen bases as grossly undervalued in an era of power hitters,... [More]
Sun Mar 3 201920:19Judge homers twice as Yankees beat Tigers in spring game
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — All rise — again. Aaron Judge is back.Judge hit his first two homers of spring training, helping the New York Yankees to a 7-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers in a split-squad game on Sunday.Brett Gardner also connected twice and Gary Sanchez had a solo drive as New York went deep six times. The Yankees set a major league record with 267 homers last season.Gardner and Judge hit consecutive homers off Daniel Norris in the first. Judge went deep again in the fifth, belting a two-run drive to right that went off the glove of a leaping Victor Reyes and just over the wall.Norris allowed three runs and four hits in 1 2/3 innings. The 25-year-old left-hander is trying to win a spot in Detroit's rotation."Just trying to throw strikes and stay out of the middle of the zone, which I didn't do very good today," Norris said.Masahiro Tanaka tossed three scoreless innings for the Yankees in his first spring start. Traditionally one of baseball's most deliberate workers, the right-hander... [More]
Fri Mar 1 201917:27Nationals look to move on with Harper off to Philly
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Bryce Harper is gone from the Nationals to the Phillies after agreeing to a record 13-year, $330 million contract. But he's is still a looming presence in Washington's clubhouse as the team begins to move on without the star who played with them since 2012 at just 19."He used to be right here," third baseman Anthony Rendon said motioning to Harper's old locker Friday morning. "And all you guys used to be in this corner all the time when he was here. And now even though he's not here y'all are still in this corner."And so it went with much of the talk in Washington's clubhouse centering around the six-time All-Star and 2015 National League MVP, who had long been a face of the franchise. While it had been less than 24 hours since Harper had agreed to the deal, the Nationals had known for quite some time that he wouldn't be wearing their uniform this season. And manager Dave Martinez acknowledged that being without him this spring training has taken some getting... [More]
Fri Jan 11 201920:38Nationals avoid arbitration with Rendon, Turner
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington Nationals avoided arbitration with two star infielders, reaching an $18.8 million deal with Anthony Rendon and a $3,725,000 agreement with Trea Turner. The one-year deals Friday with Rendon and Turner left only two Washington players still eligible for arbitration. Outfielder Michael A. Taylor asked for $3.5 million, and the team offered $3.25 million. Reliever Kyle Barraclough asked for $2 million, and the team offered $1,725,000.Rendon and the Nationals have indicated an interest in trying to reach agreement on a long-term contract for the third baseman, who made $12.3 million in 2018. He's been one of Washington's top players the past few years, a key member of the lineup and a top-flight infielder, and last season Rendon hit .308 with an NL-high 44 doubles, 24 homers and 92 RBIs.Turner continued his progression as a key top-of-the-order member of the Nationals in 2018, when the shortstop played in all 162 games and led the NL with 43 stolen bases while batting .271 with 19 homers and 73 RBIs. Turner made $577,200 last season. The Nationals acquired Barraclough from the Miami Marlins in a trade earlier this offseason.___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports___This version has been corrected to show the team offered Taylor $3.25 million.
Thu Jan 10 201922:37AP source: 2B Dozier, Nationals agree to $9M, 1-year deal
WASHINGTON (AP) — Brian Dozier found his latest team — and the Washington Nationals found a temporary solution at second base. The free agent infielder and the Nationals agreed to a $9 million, one-year contract, subject to the successful completion of a physical exam, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press on Thursday. The person confirmed the deal on condition of anonymity because neither the club nor player had made an announcement.Dozier, who played for the Minnesota Twins and Los Angeles Dodgers last season, would fill Washington's need for a new starting second baseman and could help add some power to the lineup, particularly important if slugging outfielder Bryce Harper ends up leaving the Nationals as a free agent.By only committing to Dozier for one season, the Nationals leave open the possibility of turning to leading infield prospect Carter Kieboom at second base in 2020.The 31-year-old Dozier's agreement with Washington was first reported by ESPN.Dozier... Thu Nov 8 201818:08Arbitration: Schebler, Bush short; Edwards, Biagini make it
CARLSBAD, Calif. (AP) — Cincinnati outfielder Scott Schebler and Texas pitcher Matt Bush just missed the cutoff for salary arbitration eligibility, while Chicago Cubs pitcher Carl Edwards Jr. and Toronto pitcher Joe Biagini earned the final spots. The Major League Baseball Players Association said Thursday the cutoff for eligibility this winter is 2 years, 134 days of major league service, up from 2 years, 123 days last year. The top 22 percent of players by service time with at least two years but less than three are eligible for arbitration as long as they had at least 86 days this year. They join the older group of 3- to 6-year players.Players and teams are scheduled to exchange proposed salaries on Jan. 11, and hearings for those lacking agreements will be scheduled for Jan. 28 to Feb. 15 in St. Petersburg, Florida.Twenty-five players are eligible as so-called super-2s. MILWAUKEE (AP) — Christian Yelich became the first major leaguer to hit for the cycle twice in one season against the same team, driving in four runs to lead the Milwaukee Brewers over the Cincinnati Reds 8-0 on Monday night.Less than three weeks after his cycle in Cincinnati, the streaking slugger accomplished the feat against the last-place Reds once again to help the Brewers in their playoff pursuit. Milwaukee stayed 2½ games behind the first-place Chicago Cubs in the NL Central and maintained a three-game lead in the wild-card race.Yelich singled in the first inning, doubled in the second, launched a two-run homer in the fifth and completed the cycle with a two-run triple in the sixth.
