Thu Mar 22 201813:59What will Mariners be? Much depends on pitching staff
SEATTLE (AP) — Robinson Cano has spent enough time now to understand the angst surrounding the Seattle Mariners. The Mariners have the longest playoff drought in the four major sports, meaning there is an urgency to finally end the skid. They also appear to be an average ballclub at a time when the American League is filled with mostly superpowers and rebuilders. It's an odd spot for a club with talent but scant optimism that this is the year the playoff drought ends."We've been close a couple of times. ... That's life, that's part of the game. But I know we have a bunch of great guys here, guys who know how to play this game," Cano said. The Mariners enter the 2018 season with an offense that could score a lot of runs and a pitching staff that could give up just as many. Cano and Nelson Cruz are the anchors of a batting order that with the additions of Dee Gordon and Ryon Healy could be potent enough to keep Seattle in a lot of games. But there's mostly skepticism about the pitching staff.James... [More]

He can earn $1 million in performance bonuses this year. The 32-year-old Walker hit .265 with 14 home runs and 49 RBIs last season, then became a free agent. He will likely start at second base, giving prospects Gleyber Torres and Miguel Andujar more time to mature in the minor leagues."It's certainly a crazy offseason, but more than anything my hope was that I'd land somewhere that's going to be competitive and have a chance to win," Walker said. "I'm happy to be here, happy to be on a contending team."Starting pitcher Lance Lynn got right to work with Minnesota after finalizing his $12 million, one-year deal. He turned down a $17.4 million offer to stay with St. Louis, and looked for a richer contract in free agency.Lynn... [More]

Thu Jan 25 201819:04Focus on rotation as Mariners head into spring training
SEATTLE (AP) — Whether it was intentional or not, Seattle Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto placed a heavy burden on Felix Hernandez on Thursday. If Hernandez can stay healthy and be a strong, serviceable arm for Seattle — not the ace he once was — then the Mariners' questionable pitching rotation may turn out to be just fine. If Hernandez is injury prone and unable to stay on the mound as was the case in 2017, the Mariners could again be scrambling with their pitching staff."Nuts and bolts it comes down to how Felix comes into spring training," Dipoto said during the Mariners' pre-spring training luncheon. "If Felix can give us the 25 starts or more than he gave us in 2016, we're going to be a good team. If Felix gives us 16 or less as was the case last year, we're going to have to answer a lot of questions."Putting that on Hernandez shows how tenuous the Mariners' pitching situation is going into the 2018 season. Seattle seems solid at the top of its rotation with lefty James Paxton... [More]

DH Nelson Cruz has hit six home runs in his past nine games to reach 39 for the season. If he can hit one more in the final two games of the season, it would mark his fourth consecutive season with at least 40 homers. Only eight players in major league history have had more than four consecutive 40-homer seasons -- Babe Ruth (seven), Alex Rodriguez (six), Sammy Sosa (six), Adam Dunn (five), Barry Bonds (five), Ken Griffey Jr. (five), Duke Snider (five) and Ralph Kiner (five). "He said to me, probably a week ago, 'I'm not worried about that (40 homers), I'm just going to have good at-bats,'" Mariners manager Scott Servais said of Cruz. "He's got the kind of swing and he's so strong that if he does have good at-bats and he squares it up, good things are going to happen."

DH Nelson Cruz hit his 38th home run of the season, a two-run shot in the fourth inning of a 6-5 loss to Oakland on Wednesday afternoon. After 2B Robinson Cano singled, Cruz hit a two-run laser, with an exit velocity of 117 mph, into the left field seats off RHP Kendall Graveman. "For us that get to watch him every day, it doesn't really surprise us any more, how strong he is and when he does square a ball up how it jumps off the bat," Mariners manager Scott Servais said. "When he hit the ball you think it's going to go foul, but it just didn't have time. It was hit that hard." Cruz, who went 2-for-4, has 37 home runs as a designated hitter this year, matching Edgar Martinez' club record set in 2000.
