The Cardinals need room on the 40-man roster for Stephen Piscotty, who will likely serve as the regular first baseman. Kelly had a strong season for Triple-A Tacoma last year, but he owns an ugly .203/.317/.286 slash line through 79 games for Triple-A Memphis this season.

Kelly will not make the team for Opening Day according the manager Mike Matheny, MLB.com reports.

Kelly will open the season as a utility player for Triple-A Memphis. Matheny indicated he will play second base, shortstop, and outfield while also working some side sessions as a catcher to serve as an emergency catcher.
