Lavarnway was activated from the 60-day DL and optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket on Thursday.
While the Red Sox don't have the catcher depth they enjoyed to begin the season following the release of A.J. Pierzynski and the placement of David Ross on the disabled list, the team appears content to let Christian Vazquez see plenty of playing time with the major league squad the rest of the way. As a result, Lavarnway will continue to hone his development in the minors, likely rejoining the Red Sox in September when rosters expand.

Lavarnway (wrist) re-started his rehab assignment Thursday night after sitting out nine days. He went 3-for-5 with a double for Triple-A Pawtucket.
Lavarnway is 8-for-14 in four rehab games with the PawSox. It looks like the Red Sox will string him along until the rosters expand in September. Beyond this season, the Red Sox may take him off the 40-man roster in order to protect some younger prospects.
Mon Aug 4 201420:04Lavarnway (wrist fracture) eligible to resume rehab on Tuesday
Lavarnway (wrist fracture) is eligible to resume his rehab on Tuesday, the Providence Journal's Brian MacPherson reports.
He had his rehab clock halted last week, but could still make a return later in the season if he can get back on track in his recovery from the fractured wrist. In 2013 Lavarnway put up a .299 average with one home run in 25 games, but it's not clear if he would factor into Boston's mix behind the dish if he were able to return this season.

Ryan Lavarnway left Thursday's game versus the Braves with left wrist soreness.

Mon May 26 201409:56Red Sox recall Lavarnway from AAA level
Red Sox recalled C Ryan Lavarnway from Triple-A Pawtucket.
Lavarnway was hitting .265/.357/.346 with two homers and 11 RBI in 44 games this season at the Triple-A level. He owns a weak .585 career OPS in the majors and probably won't play enough to carry fantasy relevance anyway.

Fri Mar 28 201418:42Red Sox send Lavarnway to Triple-A Pawtucket
Red Sox optioned C Ryan Lavarnway to Triple-A Pawtucket.
Lavarnway did his best to make the club this spring, slashing .289/.357/.474 in 38 at-bats, but the club is set with veterans A.J. Pierzynski and David Ross behind the dish. Lavarnway could be converted to a first baseman at Triple-A to alleviate the logjam the Sox have at backstop in their organization.

Mon Mar 17 201415:05Red Sox looking to trade Ryan Lavarnway
Sean McAdam of CSNNE.com reports that Ryan Lavarnway is "being shopped around" by the Red Sox.
There's no room for Lavarnway in Boston with A.J. Pierzynski and David Ross on the roster and no room for him at Triple-A Pawtucket with Christian Vazquez and Daniel Butler expected to handle the catching duties there. If Lavarnway does wind up back at Pawtucket, he's expected to see most of his playing time at first base and DH.

Thu Feb 27 201416:10Ryan Lavarnway goes 2-for-2 for Red Sox
Ryan Lavarnway went 2-for-2 with a double as the Red Sox beat Northeastern University 5-2 in seven innings Thursday.
By signing A.J. Pierzynski and retaining Mike Napoli and Mike Carp, the Red Sox left Lavarnway on the outside looking in once again. He has an option year left, so he'll probably head back to Triple-A Pawtucket for another go. However, if someone wants to flip a prospect for him, he should be available. The Red Sox have better defensive catchers on the way, and Lavarnway probably won't hit enough to be more than a stopgap first baseman or DH.

Fri Jan 31 201421:44Ryan Lavarnway to see time at first base
Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that Ryan Lavarnway will work at first base in addition to catching during spring training.
The more versatility that the 26-year-old can display during spring training, the better his chances will be of cracking the Opening Day roster. He has intriguing offensive potential, especially with the catcher eligibility, but holds little value in mixed leagues without consistent at-bats.
