The Yankees have recalled Petit from Triple-A.

Petit will add a utility option to the Yankees' bench as part of a flurry of moves made Friday. In 18 games for the Yankees this season, he's hit .184 with five RBI and a 3:15 BB:K over 38 at-bats.

Petit was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday, MLB.com's Bryan Hoch reports.

Stephen Drew's recent reinstatement from the paternity list appears to have made Petit expendable, as the Yankees already have another utility infielder in their ranks in Jose Pirela. The 30-year-old Petit will settle back into an organizational depth role at Triple-A.

Petit was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday.

Petit saw sparse time with the Yankees earlier in the season, going 7-for-35 at the plate with three doubles and five RBI. He'll once again be called upon to provide depth at the infield positions. No corresponding move has yet been announced.

The Yankees have some of the worst organizational second basemen around, so Petit could easily find his way back to The Show. For now Stephen Drew will see most of the starts at the keystone.

Petit has now missed over a month of action as he deals with a right hand contusion, but he's been able to take batting practice over the course of the past week. It's unclear how many games he'll need to stay on a rehab stint for, but it appears a mid-to-late June timetable is possible at this point.

Petit was placed on the disabled list at the beginning of May after suffering a bone bruise on a hit by pitch, but he still seems to be experiencing pain at this point. With the promotion of Jose Pirela, it's unclear if Petit will still have a spot on the big league roster when he does return to full health.

Petit was placed on the 15-day DL on Wednesday with a right hand contusion.

Petit suffered the injury late in Tuesday's contest as he was removed in the ninth inning. X-rays came back negative, but he'll head to the DL nonetheless as Jose Pirela, who was expected to take his roster spot even before Petit suffered the injury, was activated off the DL and added to the major league roster in a corresponding move.

Petit was replaced in the ninth inning Tuesday after getting hit on the right hand by a pitch in the eighth inning, but X-rays were negative, the Associated Press reports.

He is slated to be examined again Wednesday, but should be considered day-to-day for now. Petit got the start at third base Tuesday although Chase Headley figures to be back at the keystone Wednesday.

Petit has hit just .208 in 13 games with the Yankees this season, but he did record a double in each of his last three games with the big club and also tallied four RBI over that span. Petit figures to see most of his action at second base against left-handed pitchers.

The news would seem to suggest that Petit will share a platoon at shortstop with Didi Gregorius, as the righty boasts a career .358/.382/.566 slash line against southpaws. The increased at bats should help Petit's overall numbers, but this may just be a temporary role until Brendan Ryan, who was himself initially expected to platoon at short, returns from a calf injury.

Petit was traded to the Yankees on Wednesday for a player to be named later and cash considerations.

The 30-year-old Petit will arrive at the sixth different organization of his career, likely to provide organizational depth at the middle infield positions. With Jose Altuve and Jed Lowrie locking down those spots at the big league level coming out of camp, the Astros deemed Petit's services expendable.

Petit was reassigned to Astros' minor league camp on Sunday.

In 15 Grapefruit League games, Petit hit .333 with two doubles and five RBI over 24 at-bats. The 30-year-old utility infielder will open 2015 with Triple-A Fresno.

Petit cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A on Wednesday, Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Petit was DFA'd last week to make room on the 40-man roster. He played in 37 games for Houston last season, hitting .278 with a .723 OPS. His numbers were more impressive at Triple-A Oklahoma City, where he hit .297 with 10 home runs in 85 contests.

Petit doubled, homered, drove in three and scored twice during Sunday's 6-1 win over the Angels.

Petit, who has hit safely in 15 of 20 starts since being called up on July 25, had the best game of his MLB career Sunday. His three-run home run in the second inning off Hector Santiago was his second of the season.

Petit went 1-for-3 with an RBI in Sunday's 4-3 win over the A's.

The utility infielder is hitting .274/.297/.403 with five doubles, a home run and six RBI in 23 games with the Astros since his call up on July 25.

The Astros needed some infield depth with Marwin Gonzalez (hamstring) banged up. Petit hasn't played in the majors since 2009 but was batting .297/.340/.457 with 10 homers at Triple-A.
