Mon Jul 10 202309:38Jose Urquidy To Make Four Rehab Starts
Houston Astros starting pitcher Jose Urquidy (shoulder) was able to throw a successful 40-pitch simulated game on Sunday. The right-hander has been steadily making progress and is now nearing a rehab assignment. The plan is for Urquidy to make four starts between Triple-A Sugar Land and Double-A Corpus Christi following the All-Star break. That seems fair given the fact that Urquidy has been sidelined since the beginning of May. That being said, Urquidy is unlikely to return until some point in August, but is at least making solid progress.

Fri Jul 7 202320:28Jose Urquidy To Face Hitters Sunday
Houston Astros right-hander Jose Urquidy (shoulder) will face live hitters again on Sunday in a batting practice session. Urquidy also faced live hitters on Tuesday, so the 28-year-old starter is getting closer to being cleared for a minor-league rehab assignment. He's been sidelined since May 1 with right-shoulder inflammation, so Urquidy is probably going to need at least a handful of rehab starts before the Astros activate him. Barring a setback, he should come off the injured before the end of July. There's not a whole lot of fantasy upside with Urquidy because he's not all that overpowering and has a below-average 18.7 percent strikeout rate. Urquidy will be returning to a 5.20 ERA (5.64 FIP), 1.55 WHIP, 10 walks and 23 K's in 27 2/3 innings over six starts.

Tue Jul 4 202309:34Jose Urquidy Facing Hitters Tuesday
Houston Astros starting pitcher Jose Urquidy (shoulder) will throw live batting practice on Tuesday, according to MLB.com. If all goes well, the 28-year-old should go on a rehab assignment soon and return by late July. Urquidy has been out of action since experiencing right shoulder pain during his start on April 30. Over 27.2 innings before that, the native of Mexico pitched to a 5.20 ERA, 1.55 WHIP, and 18.7% strikeout rate. Fantasy managers in deeper leagues can continue to stash Urquidy, considering his 3.85 career ERA, but his lack of strikeouts makes the right-hander less useful in standard formats.

Mon Jul 3 202314:22Jose Urquidy To Face Live Hitters Tuesday
Houston Astros starting pitcher Jose Urquidy (shoulder) is scheduled to face live hitters during a bullpen session on Tuesday. Urquidy will make the next step of facing live hitters after already throwing off a mound a few times as he attempts to return from right-shoulder inflammation that landed him on the injured list in early May. If the 28-year-old right-hander's session goes well on Tuesday, he could be cleared for a minor-league rehab assignment, but he isn't eligible to come off the injured list until after the All-Star break. Urquidy doesn't have nearly the same fantasy upside as the rest of Houston's starting pitchers, and he's gone 2-2 this year with a 5.20 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and 23 strikeouts in 27 2/3 innings over his six starts.

Wed Jun 28 202322:07Jose Urquidy Throws Bullpen Session
Houston Astros right-hander Jose Urquidy (shoulder) said he felt good after throwing a 25-pitch bullpen session on Wednesday. Urquidy hasn't pitched since April 30, though, while dealing with right-shoulder inflammation, and he's going to need some time to build his arm back up. Fantasy managers shouldn't expect the 28-year-old to return until after the All-Star break. He will need to start facing live hitters before going on a minor-league rehab assignment that is surely to last at least several starts. In six starts before his injury, Urquidy had recorded a 5.20 ERA (5.61 FIP), 1.55 WHIP, 10 walks and 23 strikeouts in 27 2/3 innings. He profiles as a league-average pitcher and isn't dominant enough from a strikeout perspective to be rostered in shallow mixed leagues.

Tue Jun 27 202321:55Jose Urquidy Throws Again Tuesday
Houston Astros starting pitcher Jose Urquidy (shoulder) tossed another bullpen on Tuesday and had no issues after throwing a bullpen on Saturday. According to Brian McTaggart of MLB.com, the right-hander will throw one more bullpen before he starts to face hitters. Urquidy has been out of action since April 30 after experiencing shoulder inflammation and hitting the injured list. Prior to the injury, the 28-year-old posted a 5.20 ERA and 1.55 WHIP with 23 punchouts across 27.2 innings of work. Urquidy's fantasy value has always been mediocre, thanks to a career 20.1% career strikeout rate, but he pitches for a solid Astros team and has always been good in the run prevention department. Fantasy managers can expect to have him back in mid-to-late July.

Sat Jun 24 202318:42Jose Urquidy Throws Bullpen Session On Saturday
Houston Astros starting pitcher Jose Urquidy (shoulder) was able to throw a 25-pitch bullpen session on Saturday. The right-hander has been on the sideline since early May due to right shoulder inflammation. The plan is for Urquidy to throw two more bullpen sessions before advancing to face live hitters. That being said, fantasy managers shouldn't expect Urquidy back until around the All-Star break. This season, Urquidy holds a 5.20 ERA and 1.55 WHIP through 27.2 innings.

Fri May 26 202322:06Jose Urquidy Throws On Flat Ground
Houston Astros starting pitcher Jose Urquidy (shoulder) threw from flat ground on Friday. The 28-year-old has been on the injured list since May 1 because of shoulder inflammation. But it appears he's moving in the right direction, considering he wasn't throwing as of Wednesday. Urquidy was 2-2 with a 5.20 ERA in 27 2/3 innings (six starts) before going down, so he's worth a stash for those with room to spare.

Mon May 22 202312:21Jose Urquidy Hasn't Resumed Throwing
Houston Astros starting pitcher Jose Urquidy (shoulder) has yet to resume throwing after leaving his April 30 start against the Philadelphia Phillies after 5 1/3 innings after experiencing pain in the back of his shoulder. An MRI exam showed inflammation near his shoulder/armpit area, and the Astros are hoping to get him back from the injured list around the All-Star break. Before the injury, Urquidy was 2-2 with a 5.20 ERA in 27 2/3 innings over six starts. The 28-year-old remains in shutdown mode, but he said that he hopes to resume throwing sometime next week. In shallow mixed leagues, fantasy managers can probably leave Urquidy on the waiver wire until he gets closer to a return to Houston's starting rotation.

Mon May 1 202317:18Astros Put Jose Urquidy On 15-Day Injured List Monday
The Houston Astros placed right-hander Jose Urquidy (shoulder) on the 15-day injured list on Monday with right-shoulder discomfort and recalled right-hander Brandon Bielak from Triple-A Sugar Land in a corresponding move. Urquidy lands on the injured list after departing his start against the Philadelphia Phillies early on Sunday night after 5 1/3 innings of work. The Astros won't need a fifth starter until May 9, so the 28-year-old's injury actually comes at a decent time for the team. After giving up two runs in Sunday's outing, Urquidy owns a 5.20 ERA (5.73 FIP), 1.55 WHIP, 10 walks and 23 strikeouts in 27 2/3 innings over his first six starts of the 2023 season. Fantasy managers in shallow mixed leagues shouldn't feel obligated to hold onto him.

Mon May 1 202300:55Jose Urquidy Leaves Game Early With Shoulder Injury
Houston Astros starting pitcher Jose Urquidy (shoulder) left Sunday's start against the Philadelphia Phillies with right shoulder soreness, according to manager Dusty Baker. He will visit with doctors tomorrow to determine the extent of the injury. Urquidy was removed after throwing a changeup that sailed way outside the zone in the sixth inning. Before he left the game, he threw 5 innings of two-run ball, allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out three. If Urquidy misses time, Brandon Bielak or J.P. France are likely to get a spot start for the Astros.

Fri Sep 30 202218:30Jose Urquidy Probably Won't Start Again This Season
Houston Astros starting pitcher Jose Urquidy is unlikely to make another start this regular season. Instead, the Astros plan to use the righty out of the bullpen, in what is likely a tune up for the playoffs. The Astros have so many high-quality starting options that even though Urquidy has had a solid season, posting a 13-8 record, 3.88 ERA, 1.1.6 WHIP, and 133 K over 162 IP, he won't see any starts in the playoffs barring injury. It's tough news for managers who were hoping to squeeze a final start out of him, but the silver lining is he can now be dropped for a streamer in daily lineup leagues.

Houston Astros starting pitcher Jose Urquidy earned his ninth win of the season Friday, allowing one run on four hits and two walks in six innings against the Seattle Mariners. Sun May 29 202207:15Jose Urquidy Hit Hard In Saturday's Loss To Seattle
Houston Astros pitcher Jose Urquidy allowed six runs (five earned) on 12 hits and two walks with four strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings in Saturday's 6-0 loss to the Seattle Mariners. He was tagged with his second loss of the season. The 27-year-old put a season-high 14 runners on base and has now surrendered at least 12 hits in two of his last three starts. He has failed to reach five innings in six of his previous nine outings. Urquidy continues to struggle this season, posting a 4.80 ERA, 1.58 WHIP, and a 34:7 K: BB across 45 innings. The Astros right-hander will look to turn things around in his next start Friday on the road against the Kansas City Royals. Urquidy is not a recommended streamer in all league formats with his recent struggles.

Tue Oct 12 202113:22Jose Urquidy Available Out Of The 'Pen In Game 4
Houston Astros pitcher Jose Urquidy was originally slated to start Game 4 of the ALDS against the Chicago White Sox. However, after the game was postponed from Monday to Tuesday, manager Dusty Baker decided to go with Lance McCullers Jr. as the team's starter on short rest instead. As a result, Urquidy will be available out of the bullpen for the game, according to Baker. The 26-year-old right-hander has yet to pitch this postseason, but he made eight appearances (four starts) over the last two postseasons and performed well, pitching to a 2.46 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP.

Tue Sep 28 202114:43Jose Urquidy To Start Tuesday Against Rays
Houston Astros starter Jose Urquidy will take the mound Tuesday night against the Rays. Urquidy has made four starts since returning from a shoulder injury and is 2-0 during that span with a 1.13 WHIP and a 4.34 ERA. The right-handed starter has been able to extend his pitch count in each proceeding start but has allowed 17 hits over his last 18 2/3 innings pitched. Urquidy twirled seven shutout innings against the Rays on May 1 but that was before he dealt with shoulder issues. Urquidy will be a middle-of-the-road DFS option for Tuesday.

Tue Sep 14 202115:58Jose Urquidy To Start Wednesday
Houston Astros starter Jose Urquidy is expected to take the mound Wednesday against the Rangers in Texas. Urquidy returned to the rotation on September 3 and the results have been mixed. He is posting a 4.91 ERA in his two starts since being placed on the injured list June 29 with shoulder discomfort. Urquidy will try and extend his pitch count slowly and these next few starts will be crucial as to whether he can earn a postseason roster spot. For the time being, Urquidy is shaky fantasy proposition.

Fri Sep 3 202117:12Jose Urquidy Returns Friday
Houston Astros starter Jose Urquidy will take the mound Friday night against the Padres. Urquidy (shoulder) was activated to make his first start since June 29 after reporting discomfort in his throwing shoulder. Before being put on the shelf, Urquidy was having a very solid season. Through 14 starts this year, the right-handed starter is 6-3 with an impressive 0.96 WHIP and a 3.38 ERA. He has walked only 13 batters all season through 77 1/3 innings pitched to go along with 66 strikeouts. Urquidy could become a streaming option down the stretch but will face a talented Padres lineup out of the gate.
